PS3 Game hard drive install size index

With many PS3 games now requiring a sizable hard drive installation and lots of gamers having a 20GB or 40GB hard drive on their Playstation 3 console I figured it was time to make this thread. This thread is meant for others to share the sizes of the installation of the PS3 game to their hard drive and whether or not the installation is required or optional. This will help others to judge how much hard drive space they will need for games that they plan to purchase in the future and to figure out how much hard drive space will meet their needs. As people post their findings I will edit the post with the new information all in one handy location.

Though that seems to be a lot it should be noted that you can easily delete this data off your hard drive if you are done playing the game or sell it. If you come back to the game you can easily re-install it and download any updates again.

No, you need to install to the internal hard drive.

You're going to need a 2.5" SATA internal HDD if you want to upgrade the size.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma - 3.3gb

I think these are all required. I know at least HSG5 and NGS are required. Don't remember Ass's Creed though i'm pretty sure it's required. just checked game data on the system and these are the numbers i have. Don't have all the cases with me.

actually, NGS isn't required. It's optional as one of the items in the menu. You can play w/o doing it.

Jesus.

A new HDD is pretty much a required upgrade if you want to make the PS3 your system of choice.

No wonder that Sony exec thinks the 40GB is too small.

I actually had just a 20GB, but planned to upgrade one day anyway. Not an issue since I knew 20GB was never going to be enough, and my HDD didn't cost all that much either. I'm a hardcore PlayStation fan, so oh course I need a lot of HDD space (I have a ton of PSN games too, along with music, movies, demos, pictures, etc. Still have over 160GB left).

I installed all the optionals because since I have a large HDD, I might as well.

I'm just thankful I won't have to run into that problem. 40GB is enough for me.

I'd rather put the 250GBs in my PC.

ah..my bad. I just remember I sat through a somewhat lengthy install process while the story text faded in and out against the red background lol.


I have a 60gb, and with 7 games, several demos and a few downloadable games, along with two fistfuls of videos, I think i've got about 9gb last time I checked. Though that might have gone down a bit cuz I downloaded a couple demos since then.

You can get them cheaper at newegg (they have a list of 250GB SATA laptop HDDs), but B&M is my preference (like at Office Depot, Fry's Electronics, Staples, etc.).

I almost got 320GB, but based on price per gig, I felt 250GB was the best bet. If I had a nice job, I would have waited for the 500GB one to come.

Updated second post with new reportings. Also converted all figures to GB so all figures are on same scale. Did some rounding up and down for quicker figuring. Also to clarify, I am looking for actual installs, not required space for game saves ect. I will better organize and alphabetize when I have more time.

I'm glad I only have GTAIV which required the 3.3 gb install thus far and most of the games on that list(aside from maybe Assassin's Creed and Heavenly Sword) aren't ones I'd want to play anyway, since I have no intentions on upgrading my hdd on my PS3 anytime soon.

I updated and organized the list better and alphabetized it. I checked Motorstorm and Tony Hawk Project 8. While they didn't require an "install" per se, they do have a hefty update files over 200mb associated with them. I am wondering if I should include these as installs or not and add them to the list? Your thoughts people?

so let me ask this question....When one is done with the game and they store it away in there closet for safe keeping.

can they delete that install?

will it hurt the game save?

what folder should one delete it from?

On the ones that said optional, like Ridge Racer 7, is there any benefit to actually installing the files other than load times? I have a 20GB so I don't feel like installing stuff unless it's required.

As far as I know the hard drive installs only speed up load times for games. You should be ok to delete any installed files including updates if short on space. As long as you don't actually delete your save (which is under a different heading) you should be ok to delete the other files and updates. As long as you have internet access you should be able to download those files again if you decide to go back to the game later on and play it again.

Dark Sector is required, and I think you should include those as well.

200MBs+ isn't a small file. I'd include it.

It's still weird to me that more disc space equals more required installs for games, great work on the list as it is very helpfull. I'm starting to run out of space on the hard drive.
