Out of Resident Evil 0,1,2,3,4, and Veronica X, I only played RE4. I want to try others but some of them are going very expensive on ebay. Which one(s) of the remaining is must play, considering that I have already experienced RE4? Thanks!

It's kind of boggled but there is a storyline across the games. Technically, you need to play all of them.

However, if you don't care about the story, play the remake of RE1, RE2, and Code Veronica.

I don't know about anyone else but I found that after playing RE4, I struggled a lot when going back to any of the previous RE games. Not only that, but they're significantly harder than RE4.

With that said, I think RE 1, 2 and Code Veronica are the best ones (after RE4, of course). A lot of people didn't like CV for some reason or another but I thought it was really good. RE1 you should play because because it's pretty much the basis for all the other stories and also has some of the spookiest moments/settings. RE2 was just badass.

I didn't care for RE3 or 0. RE3 was just kinda repetitive and I just didn't like 0.

You should play each one. RE 1 was remade for Gamecube so it has better graphics. RE 2, 3 and CV are all ports if that matters to you.

The only one I would skip, if I was going to skip one, is 0.

Fair warning though. It's hard to go back to these games after RE4. They are totally different control wise and a big difference gameplay wise.

Got a PS2 or BC PS3? Get the PS1 versions of RE 2 & 3 and the PS2 version of RE: CV. That will save you $60 compared to seeking just the GC versions.

But out of all of them if you just want one, go for the Resident Evil remake on GC.

I've played through RE4 at least 4 times now and I struggled to finish RE1 (GCN) once. I started and stopped at least 3 different times. I think I'll pass on the rest of them if RE1 is any indication of how they play. Can't wait for RE5 though....

My goal is to play all of them before Resident Evil 5 comes out. I've only played RE4 so far. Is there any significant story elements in the games?

Thanks very much for the inputs guys. Two more questions:

1. Are there any differences between PS and GC versions of RE2, 3 and VC, e.g. graphical wise?

2. Out of all the RE games, which do you think is the creepest one?

As far as straight scare value, 1 and 2 are still the best hands-down. Sure, other series, like Silent Hill, have more of a scare quality to them, but RE still set the stage for the survival horror genre.

1. Not really, RE 3 & Code Veronica(CV is for PS2, not PS1) are exact ports. Make sure to get the dual shock version of RE 2, because it's the same thing as the GC version(non-DS version doesn't include Extreme Battle Mode).

2. The Resident Evil remake is the creepiest of the series.

I played Umbrella Chronicles to get a sense of the story. Still have RE4 for Wii sealed. That's probably the only one I'll play (well, RE5 as well if it comes to Wii).

I'd say to play them all to get the full storyline & they're some of my fav games of all time. I really liked 0, can't understand why some don't, but most say its because of the controls are "old". I never had a problem with the controls though.

It was the inventory system that made me hate that game. Where you had to drop items, then if you needed that item sometime later on, had to travel back to that room to get it.

It got especially annoying
if you left the grapple gun at the train wreck
, then discovered on disc 2 that you need it. So then you would have to travel all the way back to get it. :bomb:

I deal with that by placing the items in specific places, that way it was just like putting them in an inventory box, just ran back when I needed something. Though didn't need to that often.

Zero was just a poorly conceived game all-around. I still maintain that if it had been released as originally planned on the N64 it would be nothing more than an embarassing footnote in the series. Unfortunately, once it got an 'OMGOEEZER MAKEOVER PARTAY!' it suddenly became this relevant entry into the series because it was the same generation as RE4. I still hate that people, after playing RE4, even went back to Zero. Just an awful, awful game... and certainly no way to try to get anyone into the series. It took everything that you SHOULDN'T do with a prequel and, well, did it. :bomb:

On a related note... I still fail to see, and I only bring this up because I see posts like this all the time, how people have managed to JUST play RE4. Like, I get it, RE4 is great, but how have people (and not just people who were too young) avoid an RE game for the past DECADE? The best is when people go back and play the old games and are baffled when they aren't like RE4. It's not as if RE was this small, niche series or anything... so how have people not played or, at least, didn't even know how different they were? Sorry, random.

Either way, to weigh in on the original question, even though it's likely irrelevant:

Skip Zero.

Play the ORIGINAL. While I love the REmake, it's just... not the same. Part of the joy of the original RE was the low-budgetness of the whole thing, and the fact that they were struggling when making something new. Just the voice acting makes it win.

Play RE2. Fantastic, and the best game in the series, though I'm more inclined to choose the first out of nostalgia.

Skip RE3. Look, it's a completely serviceable game, but it's a sidestory at the core. Sure, you get to be Jill again (yay), and the Nemesis was a very cool addition... but there's just really nothing there. Also has the 3rd worst side character in the series.

Play Code: Veronica. People knock this game all the time, but I love it. The story is a little wacky and doesn't move too much forward, but I just love everything abotu this game. It seemed like a throwback to the first game, and well worth playing, even though it has the worst side character ever. (Seriously, Steve sucks so hard.) IMPORTANT: There IS more plot advancement with the 'Code Veronica: X' for PS2 and GC. There's a whole new bit tacked onto the end that wasn't in the original Dreamcast version.

Skip the REmake. I love it, I really do... but it's also usually frustratingly hard. An amazingly pretty game, but if you play the original, you get enough of the gist of the story for you to understand everything. The tacked on bits (Lisa) didn't work for me, and they made Barry (BEST. CHARACTER. EVER.) look like Jeff Daniels. It's worth playing, but it's also easily skippable, in my opinion.

Now... in terms of picking them up, the only one that should be overly pricey might be Code: Veronica X. It usually hovers around the $30-40 range, at least on the Cube. The original and 2 shouldn't be *too* expensive if you already have a PS2 and just opt for the PS1 versions (original, of course, is only on PS1).

Just my take.
