According to Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac, the plan is to find an office space over the coming months and open its doors by January 2009. Chad Dezern, Insomniac's art director, will serve as the North Carolina studio director while veteran Insomniac gameplay lead Shaun McCabe will assume the role of production director. These two veterans have a shared 15 years of game development experience at Insomniac. Upon their completion of Resistance 2, McCabe and Dezern will move to North Carolina this fall to oversee hiring of 25 to 30 developers and lay the studio's foundation.

The North Carolina studio will also be known as Insomniac Games, and will focus both on developing current and new intellectual properties. While the new studio will operate largely autonomously from Insomniac's Burbank group, it will receive administrative support along with shared tools and technology.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for us to start a new group with the same philosophy that we've built up over the last 14 years at Insomniac, which is to have a team focused on top craftsmanship and attention to detail," said Price. "What's great about this team is that it's an opportunity for Insomniac to expand without increasing our number in Burbank. It's great to have a team that has that start-up mentality with a small group of people who are very focused on creating AAA games, but on the other side of the country. It gives us a great opportunity to bring on folks who may not have the ability to make it to the West Coast or who prefer the East Coast to the West Coast."

Burbank currently has 175 people working on various projects, including Sony's PlayStation 3 sequel, Resistance 2, which ships this fall. Price said the Burbank number will shrink down to 150 once testing for that game is complete. Although the North Carolina studio will have a team of about 30, Price said they will be able to create PS3 games on their own.

"Traditionally, we've had more than 30 people working on a title, but over the past few years we've learned a lot about product management and how to create more effective and more efficient pipelines," said Price. "We have a good handle on the PlayStation 3 technology. The tools and technology we've developed over the last couple of years have enabled us to develop AAA games with smaller teams."

Price wouldn't give a timetable for when the first game would roll out of the North Carolina Studio, or what that first game might be.

"One of the reasons we're close-lipped is because we don't want to mislead anybody," explained Price. "We don't try to make big promises or big statements without being able to back them up and we want to be absolutely sure our team is up, operational and going before we announce what project we're working on."

Price said the Burbank studio has several teams working on various projects and most of them haven't been announced yet. He was also mum on what was next for the best-selling Ratchet & Clank franchise.

"One of the things that we've done over the years is that we're always working on something ahead of time, so that when a game wraps up we're always ready to go into production on another game," added Price. "We always have a couple of projects in pre-production. We look pretty far ahead to the future of what we want to do over the next four years, so we plan out pretty carefully what games are going to be released each year."

They're going to create two great games a year? Damn.

Bring me more Ratchet and Clank please!!!

As much as I like R&C, I'd like to see them make more platforming games (try new things).

I'm excited about this. I only wish I had some degree related to gaming, because I'd apply their asap. I'm curious if they will make disc based games, PSN games, or both. Regardless, I'm glad to see them expand.

Now I'd kind of like to see a Naughty Dog East.

Maybe they can bring in some local talent and put out games with a NC flair to them. Grand Theft Appalachia? YOu could run moonshine for your uncle and knock up as many of you cousins as you could.

raleigh/durham....I wonder if the new studio can continue the high quality games, or if one or both studio's quality drops off. They will either have to hire mostly brand new people, with only a handful of current staff heading up to head up development, or they will seriously tax there current resources of talent and ship them east, thus dilluting the west coast studio. Or will the new hires, and the heads of the projects be able to handle the transistion

High Impact Studios is made up of some older Insomniac people and their quality is still high. I think they'll be good too, as long as Ted Price keeps a close watch on them.
