[IMG-L=135]1199[/IMG-L]Chess Crusade Dev. Slam! Pub. Destination Software Systems: DS, Wii MSRP: $14.99, $19.99
Battle chess? I have to preview a battle chess game? Oh, wait. It has claymation-ish graphics and animated combat scenes? There's no online multiplayer (big surprise for a budget title), but for a budget title, this one doesn't look half bad. If you're into chess, this looks to be way better than Wii Chess. - mrs. ship

Best Deal: There don't seem to be any specific deals for Chess Crusade.

:ds: Purchase At Amazon $14.99 (Free shipping on orders over $25)
:wii: Purchase At Amazon $19.99 (Free shipping on orders over $25)

[IMG-L=135]1200[/IMG-L]The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Dev. Eurocom Studios Pub. Sierra Entertainment Systems: DS, PS2, Wii MSRP: $29.99-$49.99
By now you’re probably finishing up those last few levels of Journey to the Center of the Earth and ready to set aside additional time with the man, the myth, the legend… so get ready to raid some more tombs with Brendan Fraser. Judging by the thirty seconds of game footage that is available, they're will be lots of shooting, hand-to-hand combat, and Lara Croft style traversing of the environments. The Wii version offers up some motion-based puzzle solving and Eurocom has some experience in making similar style games in the past that were rather enjoyable ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds" & "Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy"), so maybe this will defy the odds and turn out decent. But then again, you also get to play as the son of Brendan Fraser's character "where appropriate", which suggests that there are times when being Brendan Fraser isn't optimal. Blasphemy. - ship

Best Deal: There don't seem to be any specific deals for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Wii

[IMG-L=135]1202[/IMG-L]Order Up! Dev. SuperVillain Studios Pub. Destination Software Systems: Wii MSRP: $39.99
For all of you engineers/veterinarians/insert-job-title-here who have ever wanted to quit their day job and run a restaurant, I've got the game for you! This restaurant sim for the Wii requires gamers to manage their cooking along with the rest of the staff as they frantically try to meet the orders of the incoming customers. The graphics are cel-shaded and the overall game has a bit of sarcastic humor within. The game controls solely with the Wii-mote, with the d-pad function to cycle through your various cook stations. Eventually, you earn enough money to hire other chefs. Order Up! is a casual title that might not be challenging enough for the hardcore gamer but is sure to be entertaining for the general Wii audience. Look for this game to drop in price as $40 seems a bit high for a restaurant simulation title. - mrs. ship

Best Deal: There don't seem to be any specific deals for Order Up!

:wii: Purchase At Amazon $39.99 (Free shipping)

[IMG-L=135]1203[/IMG-L]SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 Dev. SNK Playmore Pub. Crave Entertainment Systems: Wii MSRP: $29.99
(Deja Preview) If you haven't been able to commit to any of the SNK Anthology collections we've been previewing over the last year, think of this as one heck of a cheap sampler pack. It's like when you go to T.G.I. Friday's and aren't quite sure that you want a whole order of just Crispy Green Bean Fries, Zen Chicken Pot Stickers, or Chimichurri Sliders, so you go for the Three-For-All instead. Well, SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 is the Three-For-All of the video game world. Except it's a Sixteen-For-All and at $15 it's probably cheaper than the Jack Daniel's Sampler once you factor in not having to leave a tip. You get a nice mix of fighters (Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters '94, King of the Monsters, Samurai Showdown, World Heroes), action (Burning Fight, Magician Lord, Sengoku, Top Hunter), scrolling shooters (Last Resort, Metal Slug, Shock Troopers), and sports (Baseball Stars 2, Neo Turf Masters, Super Sidekicks 3). Come for the food games, stay for the fun. - ship

So, it's a little bit more expensive on the Wii. That's still better than paying $9 a pop for the games on the Virtual Console. - ship

Best Deal: There don't seem to be any specific deals for SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1.

:wii: Purchase At Amazon $29.99 (Free shipping)

DS

[IMG-L=135]1201[/IMG-L]Final Fantasy IV Dev. Matrix Software Pub. Square Enix Systems: DS MSRP: $39.99
Cecil returns, well, not returns, but I guess continues to be on store shelves in this fourth version of Final Fantasy IV to hit North American shores. This "New & Improved" version includes full 3D graphics, voice acting, additional story and some new game mechanics. Plus it will look great on the shelf next to that sealed version of Final Fantasy IV Advance that you picked up on clearance and never played. - ship

Best Deal: Circuit City is offering a free $10 gift card with the purchase of Final Fantasy IV.

:ds: Purchase At Amazon $39.99 (Free shipping)
:ds: Purchase At Circuit City $39.99 (Free $10 gift card)

[IMG-L=135]1205[/IMG-L]Izuna 2: The Unemployed Ninja Returns Dev. Ninja Studio - Success Pub. Atlus Systems: DS MSRP: $29.99
Izuna, the pink haired ninja is back and full of plans to attend a wedding. Of course, something always goes wrong at weddings, and in this case it’s the disappearance of Izuna’s friend, Shino. So here starts Atlus’ newest edition of this dungeon RPG franchise. Good news for schwag lovers: this edition comes with two mini-posters (reverse cover images), and more game content and combat than the original. If you’re looking for a solid but quirky RPG, this Atlus title is for you. - mrs. ship

Best Deal: Amazon and EB/GameStop are offering two different exclusive mini-posters with the purchase of Izuna 2.

:ds: Purchase At Amazon $29.99 (Free exclusive mini-poster)
:ds: Purchase At EB Games $29.99 (Free exclusive mini-poster)

[IMG-L=135]847[/IMG-L]Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Clue Bender Society Dev. Gorilla Pub. Majesco Systems: DS MSRP: $19.99
(Deja Preview) Okay, so after the extreme letdown that came with playing The Deadly Secret of Olde World Park (the first Nancy Drew DS title), I wasn't about to get my hopes up with this second title. The first game was not graphically pleasant, the mini games were ultra repetitive, and the "clues" within the gameplay were easily found via the giant magnifying glass where you were supposed to point with your stylus. Olde World was rated E for everyone, but no one should every buy it. It is with those feelings of dread that I approached this game. What I found was a decent trailer and some added new features that both scare and excite me: snowmobiling, boating, sneaking a-la MGS, and an E10+ rating (you can guess which ones scare me and which ones excite me). The bottom line: this game could suck, or maybe it will be decent. I most certainly won't be fantastically awesome. Let me buy it (because I will anyway), and I'll let you know. - mrs. ship

Best Deal: There don't seem to be any specific deals for Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Clue Bender Society.

[IMG-L=135]1204[/IMG-L]New International Track & Field Dev. Sumo Digital Pub. Konami Systems: DS MSRP: $29.99
Olympic fever is spreading and Konami is not going to let the 25th anniversary of one of the original Track & Field games pass by without cashing in. How do you update a button masher to current standards? By turning it into a stylus grinder and microphone blower, of course. Compete in over twenty events including a pretty robust online mode as you test your forearm endurance and the strength of your DS screen against four other athletes. If you're not quite racing to stores yet, maybe the inclusion of playable Chibi versions of classic Konami characters such as Solid Snake, Simon Belmont, and Pyramid Head will have you hotfooting to pick up a copy. Just don't over-exert yourself, it's hot out there. - ship

Best Deal: There don't seem to be any specific deals for New International Track & Field.

On The DL with the Shipwrecks

Donkey Kong 3 (Last Week) Systems: Wii VC (NES) MSRP: $5
Back when Donkey Kong was evil he'd try to kill you by whacking bee hives while you innocently sprayed him in the groin with DDT. They don't make 'em like this anymore... - ship

Gley Lancer Systems: Wii VC (Genesis) MSRP: $9
This side-scrolling shooter import goes for large bills on the eBay market, so you can save yourself the $300 and see that this game is completely not worth that ridiculous price. It's certainly a good R-Type style shooter, but more toward the "I spend that much for lunch" price rather than the "my significant other is going to leave me" price. - ship

Ninja Commando (Last Week) Systems: Wii VC (NEOGEO) MSRP: $9
Although the title is somewhat ambiguous, this game is similar to Commando, but with Ninjas who are also Commandos. It's a fun top-down run and gun shooter with "Ninja Tricks" and "Somersaults", but I must warn you that it doesn't feature Snake Eyes or Chuck Norris due to their decisions to leave the Ninja Commando Labor Union. - ship

Super Fantasy Zone Systems: Wii VC (Genesis) MSRP: $9
Okay, who decided to make a brighter, more psychedelic, and more super version of Fantasy Zone and then wait 16 years before releasing this in America? I want them fired... at least 15 years ago. Every now and then, the Wii Virtual Console pulls out a surprise like this and reminds you why it is a valuable service. - ship

Pirates: The Key of Dreams Systems: WiiWare MSRP: $10
Elephants, dodgeball, and pirates, oh my! Capping off my weird hodgepodge of games to preview this week is Pirates: The Key of Dreams. - mrs. ship

Elefunk (Last Week) Systems: PSN (PS3) MSRP: $4.99
In what is probably the most innovative downloadable title this week comes a fun new puzzle game about bridge building. Yes, bridge building. Since bridges on their own are fairly commonplace, they've added in elephants. Elephants who need to cross large chasms. With a set number of bridge pieces, each level is about putting together a bridge that can withstand the weight of your elephant. The graphics are good, the gameplay is new in a nostalgic, lemmings sort of way, and the price is right for just $5. Holy cow, a cheap game that's worth it. Let the Elefunk begin. - mrs. ship

Rayman (Last Week) Systems: PSN (PS3, PSP) MSRP: $5.99
This funny looking character has no arms or legs and turns 12 years-old this week. Still, his decent platformer from the original PS era might be worth playing just for the sake of nostalgia. Sure, it’s full of what you’d expect with the jumping and the swinging and the collecting of items. But if you’re looking for an old-school game for cheap, this one is worth thinking about. Especially on the PSP; the portability improves the game’s overall presentation. - mrs. ship

Siren: Blood Curse Episode 1 Systems: PSN (PS3) MSRP: $
A re-imagining of the survival horror game that not too many people played on the PlayStation 2, this rendition thrusts American protagonists into the creepy Japanese village. If you didn't play the original, which of course you didn't, Siren is a combination of stealth and horror in really dark environments with enemies that the Silent Hill games apparently had no use for. The game gives you the ability to "sightjack" the townfolk and evil nurses that are trying to kill you, so that you can gain an understanding of things from their perspective, and unlike the original game, you can now move your character while sightjacking due to the game splitting the screen. And speaking of splitting, Sony has decided to release this episodically over 12 episodes, so if you want to sneak past zombies you're going to need to be both patient and willing invest small chunks of cash. - ship

1942: Joint Strike Systems: XBLA, PSN (PS3) MSRP: $10
Capcom's latest revamp comes to both PSN and XBLA this week and offers updated graphics, co-op play, and the familiar scrolling and shooting the series is known for. By updated graphics, I mean those weird "yeah, it looks hi-def, but there's something off about the interactions with the environment and the edges look to sharp" kind of graphics that so many of these downloadable games have. To go along with the co-op mode and cooperate with the sub-title, the game features a "Joint Strike" attack where a laser is tethered between the two planes and used to cut through swarms of enemies. - ship

Double D Dodgeball (Last Week) Systems: XBLA MSRP: $10
Initially I thought this was a clever title, obviously referring to the women with large breasts found in the game. Then I played the demo and there aren't any people at all, let alone huge knocker physics and bikinis. I feel like this title should have been reserved for a fun, new Dead Or Alive game all about dodgeball. Instead, for the low price of $10, you'll get spaceship looking things in red and blue shooting a ball back and forth. Sounds exciting, I know. - mrs. ship

Go! Go! Break Steady Systems: XBLA MSRP: $10
One thing I noticed at E3 this year, there were more music rhythm games on the show floor than people to play them. And while, I don't think this breakdancing game was there, I think you get my point. But if you feel like breakin', just hit the correct colored button as it makes its way to the center of the screen to the beats of original non-licensed tracks. Watch out Guitar Hero & Rock Band. - ship

Jade Empire Systems: Xbox Original MSRP: $15
Long ago, in a far off land, BioWare released this martial arts RPG and people wondered why it wasn't Star Wars. Now they can just wonder why they wouldn't just buy this used at GameStop for $8. - ship

Feedback:
Did we miss a good sale on a game? Did we miss previewing a game completely? Well, the only way that everyone can know a better deal is out there is to let us know about it. Post deals you've found or games that we missed in the thread so that CAGs can make sure they are getting the absolute best prices on new releases.

So far, it's been a pretty good summer for just about any type of RPG fan who owns a DS. Nearly every RPG type has been represented by a game this summer:
Strategy RPG: Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Difficult first-person dungeon crawler: Etrian Odyssey 2
Remake of RPG classic: Final Fantasy IV
Rogue-like: Izuna 2
Dragon Quest game: Dragon Quest IV remake coming in September (The Dragon Quest V remake was also recently released in Japan)

All this is topped off with the announcement of the Chrono Trigger DS port coming at the end of the year.

Kinda weird the Ships didn't mention the NFL Fantasy Draft Tracker since it also came out last week. It's free on the PS Store, but 400 points on the Marketplace. Although...I think it falls into the My Pokemon Ranch category of 'not a real game'.

Just finished listening to the show. Nice job. The new mic setup sounds good. Did it take you a long time to edit it like you thought it would?

Yes, I've got to work through some stuff before our next show, but audio quality should only improve from this point out.

Yeah... I really didn't know what to do with that and we already had way too many downloadable games to cover without actually looking into it. Are there achievements? ;)

Not in the PS3 version. But $5 for achievements in a non-game versus a free non-game...I'd take the free non-game.

This episode was a giant cock block it seemed because you couldn't talk about E3 until the Cagcast. BTW WTF are you on the Cagcast this week? Cheapy was on the week after Tai popped out and I want to hear some parenting stories from the man.

Call me a Luddite, but I'm not digging this downloadable future crap. :whistle2:? If I'm going to not own a copy of a game, I'm not going to pay more than $10 for it.

As for Mrs. Shipwreck being disappointed by Double D Dodgeball, as Dave Chappele said "Even girls like girls with huge knockers." Or something to that effect.

I think you might have missed where we said the CAGcast would be me, Cheapy, AND Wombat this week. I'm guessing he might say a thing or two about the baby.

Well I'm a new listener, I had listened to it once before and both of the ones Wombat co-hosted. Listened to this one to check out what you were going to say about E3...but I also realized I really enjoy it so I'm a new regular listener, great show by the way.

Wish you had talked more about E3 even if you were going to talk about it on the Cagcast..

About the SNK collection and the VC releases, if I remember correctly its two different divisions(?) handling it so the people who are doing the VC ones are probably not too happy about the game.

Track and field on the DS look fun, Mario and Sonic on the DS was surprisingly fun so this one could too. I have also wondered why they never made another "track" mat or using the DDR ones. Its not something people are "asking" for but I'm sure in the 80s no one really did either. It can't be that big of an investment and could be a hit.

wish I had a Wii, Chess Crusade sounds pretty cool (a Clayfighter version of Battle Chess sounds like heaven though it would depend on the AI)

I recommend Elefunk.

I downloaded it just because there was a demo and I was bored. I then played it. I really enjoyed it. It's a bit like Lemmings.

If you like puzzle games, the $5 on this one is well spent.

Good, good. I guess I wasn't playing much attention.

You guys also missed the Star Trek PSP game that was up on PSN last week. ;)

I'll probably give the show a listen in a little bit.

What's this Episode 1 stuff on Siren: Blood Curse? It's the entire game that's out now, but also has bundles of the pieces of the games for people that don't want to pay for the whole game at once. I have to ask how much you guys research these things? It was known last week that it's $39.99 for the whole game and $15 for each of the three four-episode bundles, so that whole segment came off as just you two making blind guesses about things you could've known for sure with a little bit more research.

The Final Fantasy junkie in me really loved the closing music to the show. I'm surprised ship never played FF IV, it is arguably one of the best, though being one of the earlier ones doesn't have all the glam of the newer games. I still stand by saying VI is my favorite, but IV is quite good (I have 2 previous remakes of it, and I'll be buying the DS version). I know you're not that into JRPG's but this IS a good one...

Show sounded good, just wish I could've listened to it earlier this week...silly work.

/tk

Great show as usual Shipwrecks, despite the slow release week. Thanks for the entertainment guys.

P.S. Thanks for the E3 input on the CAGcast Ship.

WOW, the new setup sounds great! mrs. shippy sounds just as clear and loud as Shippy now. *thumbs up!* :D

Is the special 50th episode coming later tonight?? I can't wait to listen to it. I've only been listening to you guys for a few episodes, but you are great! And Shipwreck was definitely the life of the last CAGcast :)

Should be out late tonight, yes.
You broke Mak's wish. He should get another one.
Fine, he can have another wish.

And to answer your question on how much we research stuff in regards to Siren, well, I was at E3 before we put together this show, so it was probably one of the least researched ever. Plus, the idea of putting out episodic content all at the same time is a tad bit confusing and I actually got confused just trying to understand how they were actually putting the game out. Tracking down the Sony PSN stuff is not as easy as getting a press release about what is coming to the XBLA or Wii each week.

I talked about the playing through the demo and we worked out the pricing details on the CAGcast for Siren though.

Heck, I know PixelJunk Eden is coming out this week, but I've been searching for 20 minutes to see if there is a pricepoint announced.

It's set-up like Alone in the Dark, so that the game itself is broken up similarly to a season of a TV show on DVD. Yeah, I heard you on the CAGcast fumbling the math, too. ;)

I think it's just expected to be $10 since I haven't seen a price announcement either.

Yeah, I'd expect Eden to come out at a solid $10. Hopefully another promotion similar to what they did for Monsters. $7.99 for the first week would be pretty nice.
