This could get entertaining . Even if it was the 1st game you chose [e.g. when you were younger and do not have a job , etc.] . Just list name of game and include the system , or computer it was for . :p Mine's , Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back , for 2600 .

Super Mario World when I got my SNES for christmas one year.....hmmmm how old was I..... 7 maybe?
Anyways, that's the first game I owned, but not the first I played. Played some SMB, Duck Hunt, Aladdin, etc. on my friend's NES.

With my own money? wow...the first game I can remember buying by myself was Punch-Out! for NES. It was $10 on clearence at Kay-Bee Toys.

It's a tossup between Pacman for Atari, or some crappy RPG from Sierra Online in '82 or so when I got my first computer at 4.

EDIT:

Thinking about it a bit more, it was definately Pacman and some other Atari games. My parents bought me the computer when I took apart the Atari to see how it worked.

I'm just wanting some claffification. Are these the first games people played, or actually bought with their money, whether it was from allowance, cutting grass, gift money?

If it's the first game that I bought with money I earned myself, it'll be Zelda. Did chores at my grandfather's for quite awhile for that, though he'd paid generously.

The first game I bought was Breakout for the Atari 2600. Good memories. Of course, the first game I technically had was Combat, but that came with the Atari (back in the day when consoles always came with pack-ins).

The next game after that, I believe, was Missile Command. Both games were bought with b-day money and whatever else I saved.

If you asked for it for a gift , spent birthday money on , earned money to buy , Etc.

Mega Man 4.

But I gotta thank my fellow CAG's for telling me about gamefly's $10 Mega Man Anniversary Collection :)

with my money? Jeez that's tough. It may have been Goldeneye but it also may have been a DC game like Sonic Adventure.

I think it was Star Raiders for Atari. Actually I didn't buy it, my mom did. I was only about 2-3 years old when I first got my 2600. I'm glad my parents got me started so young. The first game I bought with my own money was the original Metal Gear for NES, which I think came out around Christmas when I was 5.

Zelda II was my first game I ever picked out. I admit it was a blind buy solely based on my love of the cartoon. Now its my all time favorite.

Mario 3 is the first game I actually paid for. Birthday money and a trip to TRU after a successful visit to the dentist. Great way to reward a kid for not having cavities. I still remember looking for the ticket and how nervous I was paying the cashier. We have had a previous trip where they ran out of the game but still had tickets on the floor. Those bastards...

I believe the first game I ever bought with money I earned myself was Snoopy & The Red Baron for the Atari 2600. When I was like three, and I remember it was something like $4 in a video game crash bin at the KB Toys at the Mall in Vancouver, WA. A CAG at the age of three.

The first game that someone bought for me was Freeway for the Atari 2600. the first I bought with my own money, The Legend of Zelda for the NES.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this already. It was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that was ported to the NES from the awesome arcade game (I don't count Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt since those came with the system). Paid $35 bucks for it at KBtoys. It's the first and only game I bought for the system, sadly since I didn't have the money for games growing up. But I'm more than making up for that now, having discovered this site from reading EGM.

I'm pretty sure the first one I ever bought with my own money was
ff3.jpg

It was a long time ago so I'm not sure...it was either FF3 or it was
chrono.jpg

...pretty sure it was FF3.

The first ones I can remember are Mouse Trap and Donkey Kong for ColecoVision to go along with the Donkey Kong Jr. the system came with.... IIRC .... those would be the first console games.....the Coleco Mouse trap had the keypad overlay and different keys to switch the doors and turn into the dog....it ruled the Atari version where 1 button did everything....fond memories.

mike tysons punch out and an NES bundle with super mario bros. I know it was christmas time right when the NES came out, maybe 86?

Handheld- Tat version of Tetris with the little monsters, or Kirby Pinball land, I don't remember

Non-handheld- Banjo-Kazooie and Starfox64 at the same time

I think, although I'm not 100% certain, that the first game I ever bought was Activision Grand Prix for the Atari 2600.
