My norton antivirus that came with the computer is about to run out, so I'm looking for the best free virus protection.

Does anyone have reccomendations?

I will agree with vihit & say Avira. It's a proven fact that it's THE top free av available & it even beats 99% of the paid ones.

AVG stopped being useful a while ago, unfortunately. I used to like it, but it's slipped. My standard install nowadays is Avast! and Spybot S&D.

Things I like about each -

Avast!: Real-time on-access scanning, constant updates (seems almost daily sometimes), full scans that can go hella thorough, a wide swath of covered program types (IM, email, P2P, Web, etc) that are each customizable in their level of protection.

Spybot S&D: Real-time protection, Tea-Timer functionality allows you to track and allow/reject registry changes

I've used AVG for years until they upgraded to 8.0. Then it became a bloated piece of crap that slowed my computer and wouldn't let me go to certain sites. I don't need some fucking nanny software telling me which sites I shouldn't visit.

I switched to Avira and it's worked very well so far. As long as you get something that will scan files in real time as you get them it should be fine.

While you're at it get Spybot Search and Destroy and JKDefrag. Both are freeware.

Lol, I remember those commercials. Shit was on 10x more than that asshole Video Professor. If your computer is slowing down, or just axing veerd, you might have a wirus.

Use AVG or Antivir, whichever has a smaller memory footprint. I pair AVG (might transition to Antivir when I build my next computer) up with Zonealarm's free firewall. Works like a charm and I use that combo everytime I setup a system for myself or clean all the shit off someone else's bogged-down computer.

For spyware protection I use SpywareBlaster, don't much care for AdAware and Spybot anymore. Then I use CrapCleaner (nCleaner is another more aggressive one) for regular cleanup and to control which cookies I want to keep when I perform a cleanup.
Pirating a copy of antivirus software is just plain retarded.
:baby:

Antivirus shit's expensive. I've got bills to pay, and antivirus software isn't going to be one of them.

If you mean risking computer infection.. that's why you use a free AVG/Avast! to scan it first. ;)
Kaspersky is THE best
Like hell. Kaspersky let several viruses slip through on my machine that both McAfee and Avast later caught.

So there's my answer: McAfee (if you can find it cheap), or Avast for completely free.

if you leave it at default settings on 07 yea....but if you tune it or just use 08, its perfect....McAfee fails so bad

Thanks. I'll probably dl avast!

Noticed I have the the aol spyware blocker which has blocked alot of stuff when I dl torrents, but having more protection will make me less worried.

You actually use something that AOL came out with?

I wouldn't exactly take that to mean that it's THE best. I've visited the website where you got this information, and IIRC, many test results change from test to test. One test will say one is the best, then several months down the line, another test will "prove" that a different AV is better. Therefore, I'd take these results to mean that at this time, it might be THE best. In the next few months, that may not be the case.

I would suggest Kaspersky myself. It's easy to use, and can be had for FAR pretty often. Use a free one for a while, get Kaspersky FAR when you can, and don't look back.

Well if a person were to judge solely on that site, Avira has been on top for quite some time. Aviras reliability has been pretty stable for years - while most of the others are hit or miss with each new version.

Don't use AVG. There is literally NO reason to.

Avira and Avast both have higher detection rates, and use less system resources. Thus, they are objectively better than AVG.

Oh, and if you're clever, you can disable the annoying daily nag screen on Avira really easily, making it nag-free. It's perfect, and my favorite by far.
