In a story that might be hard to believe, PWInsider's Mike Johnson is reporting that during WWE's tour of Iraq last week retired WWE announcer and current WWE.com personality Joey Styles punched out former WWE Champion JBL during an altercation between the two. The punch busted JBL open under the eye according to reports.

As the story was explained, JBL made Styles somewhat of a hazing target during the trip as it was Styles' first tour of Iraq with WWE. Reports indicate that JBL was trying to bully Styles with many condescending comments and actions, including spilling a drink on Styles on purpose. Of course, this is not uncommon with JBL as he is known for pulling things like this with many performers and many simply deal with it because he has political stroke as a result of being a veteran.

Apparently a few days into the tour JBL, who many said had been drinking, did something that caused Styles to retaliate physically in defense. A number of wrestlers reportedly stepped in to hold the two apart. When JBL broke free, he went towards Styles and Styles is said to have nailed JBL with a pretty good shot according to one witness, laying out JBL, busting him open and blackening his eye. There were said to be no further incidents between Styles and JBL on the tour after that.

A few WWE sources have described the incident as karma coming back to JBL for his antics in the past with former Smackdown talent Palmer Cannon (who quit WWE during a European tour as a result of JBL's antics) as well as the very well known incident at the 2005 ECW One Night Stand PPV where JBL took it upon himself to take out The Blue Meanie during the closing brawl of the PPV. The incident between Styles and JBL was said to be talked about quite a bit at last night's Raw taping in Philadelphia, with many becoming amazed at hearing the story. JBL was described as acting completely subdued at the taping, which is something out of the ordinary for him as he more than likely knew the story was making the rounds. Styles was attempting to downplay the incident to those who brought it up to him. The general feeling was that it was considered doubly embarrassing for JBL since he was one of the main people involved with setting up the Iraq tours. The incident has now been coined by some in the company as the "Iraq Punchout."

Who's the always dapper guy
That can yell "Oh my god" on the fly?
(Styles!)
You're damn right

Who is the man
That punched out that Bill O'Reilly fan?
(Styles!)
Can ya dig it?

Who's the cat that won't back down
And made JBL poop himself and frown
(Styles!)
Right on

You see this cat Styles is a bad mother--
(Shut your mouth)
But I'm talkin' about Joey
(Then we can dig it)

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his fans
(Joey Styles)

Poor Jericho. :whistle2:(

Edit: Thanks, Iron Clad Burrito!

I like the thread, especially since it uses the gif I posted. The JKO needs to be memorialized.

But, regarding the other part of the title- (and this has nothing to do with Chase lest he or anyone else may think such things) Why do people spell pro wrestling as "pro-wrestling"? There's something about the superfluous hyphen that irks me.
What a fucking crap match. LAME. Cena makes Jericho tap out after 2 seconds?!?!? Give me a break. Jericho hit the codebreaker and the walls of Jericho, plus a monsterous bulldog onto the outside stairs. Jericho should have had that match.
I'll post this here, too, since it is definitely worthy and I'm still irked by Jericho losing in such retarded way. Probably Vince's doing. sigh.

I agree with your sentiments. 100-percent. Cena kicking out the Codebreaker then muscling out of the Walls of Jericho really hurts Jericho's credibility. :bomb: Oh yeah, and Jericho tapping so quickly adds to it.

That STFU was reminiscent of Batista's headlock from Summerslam, just flex your arm and not even touch the other guy

Cena hopping up following 45 seconds of the WoJ like he wasn't hurt at all was pretty lousy in terms of believability. The end of the match was hot, but that doesn't change that Cena gets no respect. Whether or not he deserves it is immaterial: he doesn't get it anyway.

Finally a good match. Solid throughout. and a wrestler who deserved winning, actually won. Great job Jeff Hardy!!! Congrats hardy!!!

I can't believe Matt didn't come out there to celebrate with him. I guess I can see why, with the big ending on top of the stage, but I'm still surprised Matt wasn't there.

I'm going to say Jeff holds onto it until No Way Out, successfully defending against Edge or H at RR while the other one probably wins the Rumble. Although if they do go with Triple H vs. Taker at the Wrestlemania, it wouldnt necessarily need the belt involved, leaving maybe a Jeff vs. Edge TLC?

Any combo of those top 4 guys on Smackdown is a solid matchup though
further proof that it was simply just trips who didnt wanna job to hardy. good match though.
Probably b/c it would've made it seem like he disposed of Kozlov, which probably wouldnt be good for their feud at this point. If he didnt come out during the match, then he would've been there for the celebration

Ha, I read the results and came in to mention the same thing that two others already have... that, while the 'big one' is exciting for Hardy, it really does seem like they put the belt on Edge just so HHH didn't have to lay down for Hardy.

i hope with all my being that is a joke not an exact quote....

From PWTorch.com:

Torch specialist Greg Parks was in Buffalo, N.Y. tonight for the Armageddon PPV featuring Jeff Hardy's first WWE Title victory.

Parks reports that Jeff Hardy stayed out in front of the fans for about 15 minutes after the main event match ended.

Approximately seven minutes was shown on the PPV, then Hardy stuck around another seven or eight minutes to celebrate with the fans. ECW champion Matt Hardy then came out and celebrated with him.

Parks reports Triple H also stuck around and shook Jeff Hardy's hand in the ring.

Gah, I was on my way here to predict Triple H winning the Rumble.

I always miss the PPVs where unexpected people win titles.

I hope if anything comes out of this, Jeff gets rid of the spinner. I don't care if he paints it or carries it around in a Hot Topic bag, every time someone new holds that belt I just get high hopes for it to change.

And risky - I wouldn't expect him to hold it past the Rumble, but kudos to WWE for finally pulling the trigger on him and making him an ever bigger star in the process.

Given Jeff's wellness issues, I'm somewhat surprised they gave him the belt at a PPV when the next one is over a month away. I'm glad to see them pull the trigger on him and get rid of the "choker" label they attached to him, as that really can nix a guy's drawing power if he loses the big one too many times.

Now that they've firmly established him as a top-tier guy after his big '08 push and title win, it's up to Jeff to stay clean and keep his momentum going, and if he screws up again, they'll have to hope he doesn't end up being a major draw for anyone else and have all the time they spent on him be wasted (ala Lashley last year). If nothing else, they turned what seemed like a missable show beforehand into a memorable one, and given people a compelling reason to order the replay.

Edit - An awesome Christian vs. Morrison SvR '09 match I had today.

The lineup for Global Impact II has been announced -

Nothing on paper looks as great as Nagata vs. Angle, but I'm hoping that this still winds up being a fantastic TV special/DVD like last year's was.

Well, that's amazing. My former fav wrestler wins the WWE Championship in my Hometown. If this was 2002-03 I wouldve been way more excited. Still, it was an awesome show live, and beat the living snot outta GAB 05 (the last PPV we had, and my last WWE live event).

On a side note; kids fucking love Cena. Like a lot.

Yep I got a feeling that Jeff is just a transistional champ on the way towards jobbing to Triple H at the Rumble to add to how many times Hunter has won the title. Either that or Jeff jobs it out at Mania after Triple H either wins the Rumble or wins some kind of number one contenders match.

Hardy winning the title is a surprise. I'm at least shocked that they bothered to give the belt to Edge just to hotshot it to Hardy a month later. 'Course, if HHH is as high on Hardy as has been reported, I guess it's not too hard to believe - though I'm amused that HHH didn't take the pinfall.

Cena over Jericho is a joke, espescially since the Cena kicking out of the Codebreaker was treated as the spot of the night but Jericho kicking out after an FU is no big deal. Superman indeed.

Kinda bummed that Punk needed the angle of an "injured" Rey to win the IC belt.

It's nice to see somebody new as champ but I know it's not going to last long. Better than seeing more of Edge as champion. I thought the PPV was real lame up until the Jericho/Cena match. The main event matches were good though.

missed the punk/mysterio match, sounds like he may have broked reys nose thoug as alot of reports are saying he was bleeding pretty bad from his nose post GTS

I'm surprised so many of you didn't see this coming. With Jeff being in the main event scene for several months straight and the constant references to him "never winning the big one" (even Matt cut a promo saying he wasn't sure Jeff could ever do it) it's been pretty clear that he was going to get the belt at some point. The length of it playing out, though, almost certainly had to do with making sure he was going to stay clean. I agree with most of you that it won't be a particularly long run, 2-3 months tops. Compared to Raw this last year, though, that would be Sammartinoesque. Just as a reminder for Jeff...

"Mr. Hardy, package from RVD."

Don't be stupid, Jeff.

I find your use of the term "superfluous" superfluous.;)

I suspect Jeff will retain once at a PPV then drop it at the following PPV. Probably to Triple H. :bomb:

It would be neat if Christian returned and made an impact in the WWE title scene. I would dig it if he did a run-in and helped Edge regain the title or ran interference to cause Edge to lose an opportunity at regaining the title, or perhaps some other sneaky option.

That is, if Christian returns to WWE.

Did Edge successfully defend the belt at any PPVs, or did he just win it/return at the last PPV and immediately drop it at Armageddon?

(I remember when I could go one-for-one with this kid in high school for trivia, and now I can't even remember when Edge won the belt, let alone who was, say, the WWE World Champion in June of this year. Or July. Whatever.)

And don't blame me for screwing up the WWE title names; it's the company who has switched them on shows as well as given them equally uninspired and blase names. I think we need to focus on "spinner" and "wcw title." That makes sense to me, anyway.

After a quick wiki check, Edge successfully retained his belt at:

- Summerslam '06
- Judgement Day '07
- One Night Stand '07
- Vengeance Night of Champions '07
- Rumble '08
- No Way Out '08

No no no, I mean just this past reign. The last PPV was Survivor Series, right? Isn't that when Edge returned?

EDIT: http://www.wwe.com/inside/titlehistory/wwechampionship/

Yup. Triple H's reign: just shy of 7 months. Edge's reign: 3 weeks to the day. Jeff Hardy's reign: however long it takes to face off against Kozlov.

EDIT2: Did you know, the spinner title has changed hands only 3 times this year? 1st from Orton to HHH in April, 2nd from Triple H to Edge 3 weeks ago, and 3rd to Jeff Hardy last night. The WCW title has changed hands 8 times this year, OTOH.
