I've googled this and found some other people have a similar problem, so here we go...

I use GameCube component cables to hook into a 32" LCD HDTV (720p)

when playing MegaMan X Collection, the title screen and selection screen come up looking great, but the games themselves flicker, almost like it's interlaced video

It's really annoying because it's borderline seizure-inducing, lol...

I read that the game tries to output 240i instead of 480p - is there a way to correct this or to change a setting to force it to play in 480p?

Oh man that sucks. I wonder if it does the same on the Wii using Component Cables. I own a copy of that so I'll have to check that out. Scary stuff :(

Alright guys I'm going to go and test it now. My wife is sleeping so I'll have to keep the volume down ^_^ Let you know in like 10 minutes (if I don't start playing the games and forget to stop). Cya soon!

I am happy to report that the game does NOT appear interlaced with the Wii and use of Wii Component cables. Keep in mind though that the game is not designed with Progressive Scan in mind (at least it doesn't mention it on the package). The game also appears blurrier than I remember on the SNES but that may be due to it being blown up on a large 46" HDTV or the fact that the Gamecube one is essentially emulating the older games.

For the record, it showed up as running in 480i on my TV which makes sense since it's not a progressive-enabled game. If you guys have any more questions hopefully we can figure them out ^_^

hmm, so there was no flickering effect, or thin black lines through everything?

When I was playing X and X2, if I'd be running an jumping forward, you could see what the picture was supposed to look like for a split second

I kinda hate this whole thing with the flicker issue... On the plus side, I did pick up this game used for 4 bucks at a thrift shop and it's been WELL worth it (especially since I'd never played any MegaMan games before)

I'd normally say it's a prob with my TV but all my other gamecube games don't do this (especially the other old skool collections like the MegaMan Anniversary or the Sonic collections)

I'll try hooking up the composite cables and seeing what happens...

Yeah, LinkTGF...nothing like that. Video looked silky smooth so I'm guessing it's something with the Gamecube and not the Wii. I guess the Wii is fixing whatever problem you're experiencing. Great deal on the game though. I really should check out thrift stores in the future =P

For the record also, I like playing the game with an SNES pad more than the Gamecube one. Maybe I should get the PS2 version as that's closer to the SNES hmmm

well I used the composite cable and the video, while blurry (as I'm accustomed to using the component cables) was fine and didn't flicker... Sadly I'm either going to have to learn to live with it or use the composite to play this one until I find a solution...

Oh, as for thrift store, find some places and check them out regularly - I used to go once a week to some of my haunts and often just find weird stuff I like - Village Discount Outlet (a second hand thrift store in my area) has flat rates on stuff like dvds and video games, all the same price for one type of thing...

Same thing with pawn shops - there's a few around here and one in particular that has alot of dvds, all for 5 bucks a piece, or 3 for 10 bucks. I got them to sell them to me for 2 bucks each tho and picked u alot of great stuff, including the second season of the Munsters and season 1+2 of Mr Show for 2 bucks each :p

That's awesome. I really should. Pawn shops are always in a sort of shady part of town where I live and the thrift stores around here aren't much better. Still, I hear everyone talking about them so I should check them out. I did get a bunch of great SNES games from Good Will's online auctions once though :)

I've never liked the idea of GoodWill doing online auctions... To me it takes away the thrill of the local hunt and only provides the money grubbing corporate sellouts to rip off people who just want to get a good deal :(

Reminds me of when I used to work for BME and my store manager would knowingly pay lower on something that was worth more (in theory) and instead of regularly pricing it and putting it on the floor, it would go onto eBay, thus losing us a potential customer who would find it there and maybe be a repeat customer based on that fact that we sometimes have hidden treasures...

The problem with GoodWill's online auction is that they get that stuff for free, and usually everything in their store is a flat price (shirts are X amount of dollars, cds are X amount, and so on) but the auction takes away from finding that gem in a hunt of the local places and perpetuates what I call "collector's syndrome" - where an artificial scarecity is created by people who don't want to give something up and then when it does enter the market it's higher priced. Makes sense, but then when everyone does it, simply because it has been known to go higher (often for odd reasons, like a shortage at one point) then it never goes down in price.

For example, the Gamecube Zelda collector's edition - tons of copies floating aorund because it was given away free, but people were hanging onto them for a while, and at a time it was scarce to find... Now there's a billion copies out there and because ti commanded 50 bucks at ONE POINT, everyone thinks their copy is worth that much. Even GameStop had them, until recently, for 40 bucks, without a case or instruction manual, disc only...

Sorry to have gone off on a rant, but that's something that pisses me off :(

I haven't grabbed this gem yet, so I'm glad someone tested it on the wii.

wonder what the gamecube is doing to mess up the picture... it's not with any other game huh?

LinkTGF, I couldn't agree with you more (you really make a great point with the Zelda Collector's edition there). I didn't know that most thrift stores were flat priced like that before...I guess their auctions are the only way I really have access to some of their items, but you're definitely right about the people running them. It's too bad though, because it's a good cause, but definitely could be better.

xycury, yeah just doing my part :) If I had component cables for my Gamecube I'd test that as well, but alas they are too expensive (again with something that shouldn't be so overpriced/rare but is =P).

I felt the same way about the component cables at first too, but I've read that they have a video card built into them, so that might be part of the higher price, plus the fact that they are much harder to come by in general. IMO, it's one of the few items that might be worth a little more in most instances. Tho I do wish they were cheaper and easier to find, or at least have a 3rd party version...

As for the Zelda Collector's Edition, I was lucky enough to find a CAG who had 3 copies and sold me one, mint in shrink for 30 bucks - at the time it was impossible for me to find one with everything included, let alone unscratched

Gamestop has the GC component cables cheap (used). They seem to be more readily available now there, though perhaps not readily available still. It is possible to check for them at GS via their web site (search for something likely to be in stock and then enable out of stock items in searches at the bottom of the page, then search for "component cable" and you should see it). You can see if any of your local GS's have any in stock. You can also just go and look, but be sure to look everywhere in the store - GS's aren't always so good at putting used accessories in the right location in the store.

xycury, apparently the game is set to display at 240i, and if your TV does not support that setting, then you are screwed... So... Using the composite cables works fine, but the pic is... just ok... Plus, I'd have to go behind the TV and switch the audio jacks every time I wanted to play the game... I think I'll just deal with the strobe/flicker effect and pray to Xenu that I don't have epilepsy...

On the upside, according to all the complaints I've seen about the game problem, everyone else can't see the game at all, and I'm at least getting picture, as flickery as it is (which is on all the games, as I tested last night)

240i, yuck... well does the Wii upconvert it even more then?

as for the component cable, sure the GS crowd may show that they have one, but it's been widely known that they mislabel them.

I'd still check, but for a cable that retails about 50... and it was only out for a short time here in NA... honestly just get a Wii and get all the great games that also come with it :p

Glad to know that the big N is full on backwards sexy loving time.... unlike the X and the PS...

Now only if they made an adapter so that I can play my GBA on the Wii... some type of USB device would work :D

Yeah that's a good point xycury. LinkTGF, are you using an official Nintendo Component cable? I didn't think it mattered but my picture on my VC games was really fuzzy and spotty with a generic GS Component cable...after getting an official Nintendo one it was crystal clear. Just a heads up in case you're using a generic.

Definitely get a Wii though in the future if you can :) It's well worth the investment.

xycury, I totally see it coming eventually that Nintendo comes out with an external box (or even a Wii v2 that has GBA or even some DS type compatability...at least I Hope so).

Just to make it clear, there is NO 3rd party Component cable. Nintendo brand only.

3rd party Composite cables do exist, and they are frequently mislabeled at GS to think they are Component.... that's why I warned with my post about it.

as for the Wii, I think it's a better system overall than what MS and Sony had planned. If they were more BC than what they are now, I'd might even save to invest, but that's why I'm sticking with N because I can enjoy more games for less than I could otherwise. I'd have to invest in more systems and more plugins, more wires, more controllers.

yuck.

Yes, sorry for the confusion. I didn't mean to say Gamecube Third Party Component cables...but there are in fact 3rd party Wii Component cables. Sorry for the vagueness there. Hope that clears things up a little =P

There were never any 3rd party component cables for the Gamecube. The only component cable available is made by Nintendo. Oh - and thanks for the heads up. I know now not to ever get MegaMan X for GC. If I ever get it I'll get it for my PS2.

Goomba, I'm using an official gamecube component cable - i don't think I've ever seen a 3rd party component cable.

I'm not really a big fan of the Wii... I used to work at a video game store and any time we got them in I was not too impressed. I didn't really like the games, and the only thing I liked was Virtual Console, but I emulate, as I already own the games, and I have my computer hooked up to my 32" TV

xycury, I think there is a 3rd party GBA player, made for the gamecube that hooked in through the memory card slot

confirmed to work with Wii, but you need an action replay >> http://wii-news.dcemu.co.uk/play-gba-games-on-your-nintendo-wii-tutorial-48843.html
