Graph covering F2P details.

1. What does Free to Play mean and why are you moving to this model?

Free to Play means anyone can enjoy the exciting world of DC Universe Online at no cost. Alternatively, you can purchase the items or features you want, or even get premium access to game content by purchasing a subscription. It’s up to you and how you want to play the game. There is no software purchase or subscription fee required for basic game content and features.

Using this model, players will have the option to customize their game experience by purchasing services, items and more that best fit their style of play. When added to an already robust world, you will be able to play the game in different ways.
There will be three access levels offered in DCUO: Legendary, Premium, and Free.

2. What is the Free Access Level and how much does it cost?

With the Free Access level you can enjoy all of the level 1 – 30 missions, Alerts, Duos, Arenas, and the Batcave and Fortress of Solitude Raids. There are limitations in terms of character slots, inventory, and other features. Be sure to see the complete access comparison matrix for full details. Best of all, this access level is completely free, just download the software and play!

3. What is the Premium Access Level and how much does it cost?

Premium Access is the next level up from Free Access. It contains everything from the Free Access level plus more slots, capabilities, and options. Be sure to see the complete access comparison matrix for full details. To achieve this access level you only need to spend 500 Station Cash on the PC or U.S. $5.00 (or the foreign equivalent) on the PS3 Marketplace. Best of all, Premium Access does not expire.

4. What is the Legendary Game Access Level and how much does it cost?

The Legendary Level is the “I want it all” way to play. It includes 16 character slots, a greatly expanded inventory (an even more inventory slots are available for purchase), free access to all current and future DLC Packs, and much more. This level of access gives you the most features and options, including unlimited cash balances. We have many game pass plans available to Legendary players so be sure to check the in-game Marketplace, PlayStation®3 Store or dcuniverseonline.com to choose the one best for you.

5. Can I use SOE Station Cash to purchase my Legendary Access?

Yes, you can. Legendary level access will be available for purchase for PC players in game with SOE Station Cash.

6. As a current subscriber what does going to the Free-to-Play model mean for me?

As a current subscriber of DC Universe Online, you will automatically convert to our Legendary Access plan with all its benefits and privileges as long as your subscription remains active. For you, the change to Free-to-Play opens up additional benefits including increased numbers of inventory and character slots, priority access to servers and the inclusion of all DLC Packs in your access level at no additional charge!

7. I’m a former subscriber but want to try the game again. What features will be available to me?

Anyone who has subscribed to DC Universe Online before the free-to-play transition will be converted to a Premium account at no cost. This provides you additional benefits you would not receive with a Free Access account such as access to the Broker, greater inventory space, and much more!

8. I’m a Lifetime Subscriber. Will I need to purchase anything additional?

No. As a Lifetime Subscriber you will be kept at Legendary Access status for the life of your account.

9. Are you still adding free content to the game for everyone?

During the transition to free-to-play, we will continue to add brand new game play missions/zones that everyone can enjoy, including two more Fortress of Solitude raids! Players can also expect continued enhancements to existing content and mechanics.

10. What happens to my characters if I change from Legendary to Premium?

If you have more than six characters you will need to deactivate enough characters to get down to the six character limit. Those characters can be reactivated later by purchasing additional character slots or by upgrading to Legendary Access again. If you have more than 42 inventory items and/or more than 24 bank items you will also need to either purchase additional inventory and/or bank slots or choose which items within those limits you want to carry over to your Premium Access account. Items that are not carried over cannot be recovered later. Finally, any cash you have in excess of the Premium Access limit will be transferred to escrow (see Question 12).

11. What happens if I play with players that are of different Access Levels? Does it affect my personal gameplay experience?

In most cases, you can still play with anyone you choose anywhere in the game. Generally, your access level will not affect your ability to join with others on missions, raids and alerts. However, a player who does not have access to a particular DLC Pack will not be able to join other players in those zones.

12. Why is my cash being limited if I’m Premium Access?

While we do offer a higher cash limit at the Premium Access level, there are still restrictions compared to the Legendary level. Rest assured that the money you earn in excess of the Premium Access in-game currency limit will be kept in escrow for you and you can always buy a Cash Boost from the Marketplace to access your escrow cash for big purchases. Or, you can upgrade to Legendary Access to eliminate the inconvenience of in-game currency limits.

13. Why are Broker slots being limited?

Selling items in the Broker interface is a Legendary and Premium Access service. You can upgrade to Premium Access to get five auction slots and the ability to buy even more slots, or upgrade to Legendary Access to get unlimited slots to sell your items.

14. What kind of restrictions will be placed on Leagues for Free Access?

The Free and Premium Access levels allow you to become a member of a guild. Only Legendary Access players can actually form guilds.

People involved in Dc Universe Online

-Key collaborators include comic veterans Jim Lee (who serves as the game's Executive Creative Director), Ale Garza, Geoff Johns. Carlos D'Anda, and Scott Iwahashi, in addition to EverQuest developers, Jens Anderson, Chris Cao and Shawn Lord. The individuals certainly know what their doing. Jim Lee is an incredibly Talented artist whose memorable works include Batma Hush http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Hush Superman For Tomorrow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Tomorrow_(comic) All StarBatman and Robin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Star_Batman_and_Robin and more! Geoff Johns has a healthy backround of writting for DC with to many titles to list, but can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Johns
Carlos D'Anda recently participated in providing his art for Batman Arkham Asylum

-Sony Online Entertainment - Austin

Voice Actors

-We will be blessed with the voice talents of:
•Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy will reprise their frequent roles of The Joker and Batman, respectively. You may remember the sounds of their pipes from Arkham Asylum, as well as any other animated Batman project from the past 15 years.
•Former Firefly stars Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin will voice Wonder Woman and Superman, respectively. Though you probably didn't need that "respectively" bit, due to your understanding of gender.
•James Marsters will voice balding mastermind Lex Luthor. After playing Spike in Buffy, Brainiac in Smallville, Captain John in Torchwood and Piccolo in the recent Dragon Ball movie, this should be a nice notch in his nerd-fame belt.
•Wonder Woman's adversary, Circe, will be voiced by Michelle Forbes, who provided the voice for Dr. Mossman in Half-Life 2. She's also been in every sci-fi show ever made.

Those wishing to register for beta without pre-ordering

Congratulations!

We appreciate your interest in helping us ensure the quality of the game at launch.

You have successfully registered for the DC UniverseTM Online beta program. Our beta program is necessary to ensure the quality of the game at launch and, as a result, will take some time for us to administer. The beta will be ramping up slowly so there may be a delay before you are accepted. You will be notified of your acceptance by e-mail.

Thanks for your patience. We look forward to seeing you in DC UniverseTM Online!

Preorder/Game details:
There is a PS3 "Hero" Edition- MSRP $59.99. Not much info, but I am guessing it might just have a certain cover or extra inside of it that is more geared towards the hero characters. There may be a "Villain" edition with a different cover but noting concrete.

PC comes in two flavors (so far). Standard MSRP $49.99, and "Collector's Edition" (CE) $99.99. CE seems to come with a DC Direct Statue bundled with it.

You can also now Pre-order from your favorite retailer and get some exclusive in-game content. So far looks like there different weapons and gadgets spread through all the stores, as well as different items per version.

Not all regions are up and there aren't much details yet on just what each item does, but you can check out the link below and get an early preview.

IGN NYCC09 Hand's on.

Here are the highlights…

 • Factions are going to be a big part of the game -- both for you and NPCs. The panel named LexCorp and STAR Labs as factions (they popped up in the demo) but didn't really expand on the statement.
 • Although we've only seen Metropolis and talked about Gotham, you'll be fighting all over the world.
 • The team was split on Zatanna wearing fishnets.
 • Although Jim Lee and WildStorm redid some character costumes for the game, nothing will be super extreme. "At the end of the day, you're going to get all the characters you're familiar with, but I think they're going to look really cool and unique to this game," Lee said.
 • Wolfman said he was "blown away" by John's overview of the story for DCUO.
 • This is an action game; don't expect to be reading lots of text.
 • There still hasn't been a decision as to whether PS3 owners will be able to play PC owners and vice versa.
 • Hints from the panel suggest telekinesis is a superpower in the game and that it is hard to program.
 • The demo took place in Midtown Metropolis, which is 300 city blocks, and that's only one-eighth of the town. The Tomorrow District and Suicide Slum are in the game.
 • A fan asked if you'll be able to shrink like the Atom, grow like the Atom Smasher, or wield powers like Plastic Man. The panel would only say that there are a lot of power systems to choose from when creating a character. If you don't feel like experimenting with the creation options, you'll be able to click "inspired by" and have your stats and powers set to be like Batman, Superman, or some other character.
 • Civilian reactions will depend on what you're doing, what you've done, and where you are -- a villain walking down the street will garner different reactions based on where he or she is and what he or she has done.
 • Pedestrians are not targets -- heroes don't have to worry about hurting bystanders when they hurl a bus or whatever.

We have a lot planned for New York Comic Con this year! First of all, we are doing a panel at the Con, “DC Universe™ Online Creating the Next Legend” which is going to be a big reveal, of never before seen footage of our Character Create system. And, we also are having our NYCC Fan Event on Saturday October 9, right when the show floor closes from 6:30PM – 9:00PM ET in RM 1B01. Fans will be able meet some of our development team members and participate in a Q&A with the team and Jim Lee, we are also going to have a hands-on demo of our current Beta for attendees to playtest during the event. Oh, and did we mention, that everyone who attends the Fan Event is going to walk away with a DCUO VIP Beta Key! So, hopefully, we will see you there. But, if you can’t make the panel or the Fan Event we are also hosting a hands-on demo of the game at the DC Comics booth, Booth #2243. Stop by and let us know what you think, hope to see you there!

Looks good and interesting. Im more of a Marvel fan but seeing theres not really Dc guys in it so id give it a shot

I'm a Marvel person also (only Batman and Green Lantern interest me from DC). Coincidentally I'm also not much of a MMO person either.

I will keep an eye on this though, because from the previews the combat looks to be more action-esque than most mmos. And its a Comic Book Game. So I have to keep an eye on this.

looks good. I am also more marvel myself, but this game does have an universal appeal to it. I am a big Jim Lee fan as well. love what he did to the Xmen in the 90's

lets see how it pans out. Definately interested though

Hah yeah, I was a bit disappointed with the Marvel camp went with M$ and DC ended up going with $ony. I was hoping it would be the other way around too.

Sony has a few MMO's in the pipeline for the PS3, and this looks pretty good so far.

seems interesting...i wonder why it isn't also on the 360?
anyway, kinda looks like city of heroes...haven't played it myself though so maybe someone who has can give some insight
Looks good and interesting. Im more of a Marvel fan but seeing theres not really Dc guys in it so id give it a shot
What do you mean there are not DC guys in it?

I'm interested in what kind of "mounts" they have. I mean, not everyone should be able to run the whole city on foot right? I wonder if we'll see cars and bikes like Batman has. Would help to make the game stand out further if done right. Right now it just looks like City of Heroes with a DC coat of paint on it to me.

the first video gave me the impression that actual DC characters are NPC

I just saw this, I wonder if similar models could work for this game too.

Vogster had originally announced CrimeCraft as a free to play game, while offering gamers the option to purchase weapons and items. Vogster is currently reevaluating this plan, and has decided to take out the option of players spending real-world money on in-game weapons that could create an unfair advantage. However, players can spend money for aesthetic changes, such as a gold plated pistol, for example, as well as consumable boost items, such as a double XP item. Ultimately, Vogster has not decided on a pay-to-play plan, a free-to-play plan, or a combination of the two.

They are, still undecided but I'm interested in seeing the different options out there these days.

I'm not so sure about this game. The universe is rich, no doubt, but everything they've showed thus far looks really really lackluster. Has SOE had a proven winner since Planetside (and even that game had very questionable quality)?

What portions are you referring to that are sub par in your eyes, even at this early stage? (did they say pre-alpha?).

Looks like the Wolfman's out the bag!

Earlier this week we heard about a secret comic book "legend" joining the DC Universe Online development team. The silhouetted individual was supposed to be revealed at New York Comic Con next weekend. Of course, you didn't expect it to remain a secret until then, did you? The latest issue of Wizard magazine (via BigDownload) has let the Black Cat out of the bag: writer Marv Wolfman will be enlisting with previously revealed comic veterans Geoff Jones and Jim Lee and the rest of Sony Online.

The creator of Blade and writer of Crisis on Infinite Earths will be expanding and adding to the narrative already written by Jones, while Lee is handling the art direction. Even though the surprise has apparently been spoiled, you'll still be able to enjoy a brand new playable demo at the convention. Look for the DC Universe Online panel on Saturday, February 7.

Played the game at ComicCon yesterday...freaking amazing. I love how fluid the game is and incorporates everything I wanted other MMOs to be (two factions getting missions with the objective to stop each other). So great. I ended up wiping the floor of everyone else playing on the villain side, one game rep turned to me "WAS THAT YOU?!" right after clearing all the villain players. Love how they handle death (no pentalty, option to get up after 5 seconds or teleport to a safe spot if being camped). It just promotes fun and not a grind.

In contrast - I played Champions Online and hated it. Felt like City of Heroes with a new skin and some much needed balance patches like the inability to just fly away when you're getting beaten up. =/

Sat through a DCUO panel today and later attended a dinner that the developers held. Pretty much heard everything they had to say about the game so far.

The game is in alpha, everything shown so far is only Midtown Metropolis. Other districts like Suicide Slums will have a different vibe to it.

The streets will eventually be filled with citizen NPCs as well as traffic. Citizen NPCs will also react differently depending on faction. Example: NPCs in midtown Metropolis running from Villains while the ones in Suicide Slums don't mind them. Citizens also can't be targeted or attacked. They hinted that they're "agile" - no word on whether that means attacks will go through them or if the NPCs will jump out of the way. It looked like it was leaning towards the latter.

They seemed very anti-vehicle. Meaning, they enjoyed the idea of travel powers over batmobiles. "How many times has Batman had to be flown by Superman from place to place?"

Looks like most of the action will come in the form of "Missions". Meaning, enemy NPCs don't just hang out. They took a jab at City of Heroes "Don't expect Ninjas on one corner and Snake People on the other". Rather, it will be story oriented along the lines of "investigate this area" then when you do enemies will have spawned.

Metropolis and Gotham will be the first two cities. Expansions will continue content to go elsewhere - they mentioned space and other planets.

In addition to choosing your costume from the beginning, you'll also be able to collect armor pieces. You'll be able to customize how armor pieces look on you, whether you want some to show or not and if you want to keep your character's sillhouette. This feature was likened to Batman's different armor suits - they all still look like Batman.

Buildings can't be destroyed but while playing I did notice the ability to cause cracks. A fireball that missed ended up causing a dent in the glass doors of a building.

Oh! And they hinted at Telekinetic powers. Being able to lift and control pieces of the environment. They already had one character available to play that had a shield that propelled any object nearby.

It got me very excited. :D

Thanks for your info! Very cool of you.

Sad about the vehicles, but I guess it makes sense. Perhaps it'll have build up team work needing others to get around large distances. I really want to swing around on a grapple line though at least.

There are some cam videos floating around the net, I'll be linking to them in a while.

Played some more today. Found out a bit more about combat that I didn't know before.

That's not an energy bar underneath the health, it's a fatigue bar. The more punch attacks you swing the more fatigue you get which affects damage output.

Special Attacks aren't tied to an energy bar system, only by their cooldown.

The game is heavy on physics. You don't lock onto an enemy - you target whoever is in front of you. So if you shoot a fire ball attack and aren't facing an opponent it will not hit them. The projectile has to make contact. This makes dodging attacks possible.

Was low on health and had a projectile fight with another character. Because I circled around him, I managed to not get hit and win.

The game definitely feels more like an action game than a RPG.

I edited in a few links I thought were good into the 1st post. I might go back and add in the ones I've seen posted in the thread too later on.

The control layout (video in first post) looks really simple which is good. He did mention a lock on button I think so I ponder how that'll work with the system you describe.

Also there is footage (on gametrailers) of a villain basically doing a mission/cape that is opposite of what the heroes were doing in the previous outing. I think that is a nice touch and the interaction in the world between the two player types and then the different private instances for both is something I hope they can pull off.

I got to play it as well, and not to rehash what I wrote on my blog(for my sake, not yours), I really enjoyed it. I felt that there were two flaws: some kind of targeting/lock on, which after reading above I understand why it may not work, and a better on screen map. I felt like I had no idea which way to go. On the upside, I played as a speedster, and you get a real sense of zipping along, even running up/horizontal walls.

A good comparison to the combat in DCUO is Justice League Heroes. Just starting playing it yesterday to calm down my urge to play DCUO.

It feels similar because of the whole need to face an enemy to land a hit, combo system with heavy/light punches, and the ability to pick up anything and proceed to either wail on enemy with it or chuck it.

Anyone else keeping up with this? I hope we see a lot more soon.

Really hoping it launches there year, but I guess I am happy it seems to still be in development at least.

The main site, linked in the OP, has videos with details to catch up on info.

I am defintiely still interested in this, I'm hoping that I won't have to pay a subscription fee, but if I do I will probably still pay as long as it plays as good as it looks.

There better be a demo.
monthly fee = fail for me
:applause:

Since GameTrailers loads like shit on my PC/internet I didn't even bother with any of the videos.

If this is action based(ie no menu based/turn based garbage)then I'll try it, but if there's a fee they can kiss my ass.

I'm still waiting for a Highlander or Star Trek console game, but I'd love the ability to be able to switch sides on a whim without having to have two characters/accounts.:D

A massively-multiplayer experience, DC Universe Online brings high-energy action to the forefront with a combat system designed to deliver a fast-paced action experience with the extraordinary powers of your personally created heroes and villains at your disposal.

You'll have powers/attacks linked to buttons and you can run around mashing them wildly if you really want (and you have the energy to do so).

As far as a fee... That is the whole point of MMO's I think. To nickle and dime the players some way. So if not a monthly fee, then by content of some sort. Nothing new for console players but since it is a PC game too, I'd think it would be harder for them to justify charging for content updates.

If Sony is really going to start selling "premium" PSN accessibility (old rumor that it might include cross game chat), it might be smart of them to link that charge with access to their SOE titles like DCUO and the Agency for "free". Just out of the air thought though.

The PSBlog has a new trailer up.

The team has been hard at work gearing up for E3, and as you’ll see in this trailer composed entirely of actually game play footage. The moment you step into the world of DC Universe Online, you will experience high paced action and physics unlike anything ever seen before, and this trailer is just a taste of what lies ahead for you! Our goal at Sony Online Entertainment in Austin is to combine a fast paced action combat experience that console gamers expect with a huge online world supporting thousands of players. Our saying around the office is “Prove Thru Play,” and we can’t wait to get people in front of the game at E3 this week to take it for a test drive and experience for themselves exactly what we mean.

This trailer also shows the tremendous influence Jim Lee has brought to the table working as the Executive Creative Director on this title – his edgy take on the DC Universe has been transformed from the traditional 2D comic book medium into an immersive 3D interactive environment where you become the next legend! Between now and our release in November, stay tuned for tons of exciting releases from the team – we can’t wait to show you what is up our sleeves!

Some details and Poison Ivy Pics here.

There is a new (I think) walk through of a portion of Gotham somewhere I need track down too.

>>Found it, its Metropolis though.
