I'd like to state that I have finally received this on Goozex and I am enjoying it thusfar. Even the first real mission has some tension in it...I am enjoying the story as of now.

I am going to alter the title of the thread slightly.

After watching this thread get bumped week after week, I was starting to think you'd never try it. I'm glad to see that you're enjoying it thus far - the missions are even more fun later on - but I don't recommend playing the second game in the pack (Growlanser III) because it's just too nonsensical with faeries and amnesia as a critical plot point.

I should tell you that there are four possible outcomes for most missions: "mission complete" - the highest rank - means that you've fulfilled your objectives completely, "mission clear" means you won but a few enemies escaped or civilians died, "mission failed" means something like all the civilians got slaughtered, but nothing crucial to the plot and the game continues normally, and "game over", which is self-explanatory. If you're a completist, you'll want to strive for mission completes, as it affects the plot a little if you're able to get all of them.

Keep us updated as you play, and we'll be able to recommend more gems you might have overlooked.

And I would argue that if he said he only played P3 for one hour, you would say he didn't give the game "a chance."

I personally find gameplay in "Western RPGs" a lot more fun to play, where as I find the story in JRPGs a little more interesting.

That being said, I still need to play Persona 3 / 4.

I always remember Dragon Quest VII. You don't get into a battle until the 4 hour mark.

Yeah, I wasn't willing to chock up $20 for it but I knew I'd eventually get it through Goozex if not here from a fellow CAG.

Thanks for the impressions of the second game. If I really enjoy the first one I'll give it a try.

Story elements & character elements that I appreciate in Growlanser so far:
1) One character speaks of his pacifist beliefs yet he has joined the military to learn the mechanics of war inside/out. Then he tells you his political aspirations
2) Then he actually becomes a politician and gives you a mission, the dynamics of your relationship change.
3) The protagonist speaks of his missing father who was a treasure hunter which is relevant to the mission at hand. The protagonist talks about his aspirations to be X rank in the military.

Those are all in the first 2 missions (counting prologue/training). That's character development. People have aspirations/goals and backstories and direction.

Nocturne is what? You're a kid in highschool transported to some demon world? It's nothing. It's tripe. At best there is just a bunch of Killer 7 nonsensical Japanese bullshit.

DQVIII features nothing but flat, genre-specific, cookie-cutter character roles. The only interesting plot line in the first 20 hours of that game is the mage's missing brother. That is just sad. Rogue Galaxy's story is better and it's stereotypical.

Wow, I am really impressed with Growlanser Generations (Sense of Justice atm). It's turning out to be a real treat. Strategy RPG with a strong story direction. Sure the voice acting can be a bit lame but at least Working Designs did voices. I feel like the translation is pretty strong too.

I'm digging the mission variety. White Reflection, they through a caravan escort mission at me! Haha, I lost my "chocobos". I really appreciate the challenge in the game. If you don't use strategy well, you'll lose.

Unfortunately I believe I missed out on an extra team member opportunity. Typical JRPG trappings if you ask me. Doesn't really say how you'd get him and it's hard to tell what the ultimate outcome will be from your dialogue choices. But any hoo..

A few years back a friend of mine and myself were having a conversation about gaming and he made an interesting comment. "Anytime that you feel like you HAVE to play the game, like it's a chore, you're going to hate the game." He later went on to say how you have to WANT to play the game, no matter what it is.

At first, I was confused, the point not really sinking in to me. But finally it did. I would try BoF or Star Ocean or Tales of Destiny and I did not like them. Because I felt like it was a chore to play them, to keep up with everyone else, or just because they were RPG's I had to play them.

That's why I'm sure, everyone single one of us has some piece of crap game that we love, and everyone else seems to hate. The game just has some facet that attracts us to it. Therefore, games that IMPRESS us are all relative to their own interests, desires, etc. Any attempt to qualify any claims to why a game is better is just bad. Because, for the same reason someone says, "X is the reason Y sucks." The second person comes along "X is the same reason Y is freakin awesome"

Sorry I'm going on a tirade here. ignore. :)

I came here to vent guys...

I just got to the final boss in Valkyrie Profile 2 and I cant even finish...I just dont even care. This game really has annoyed me through out! A lot of it has to do with the battle system, which I think some people love, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But when two of my dudes get left behind after dashing, I get really pissed, and it happens A LOT. In the mean time, I have to wait for my menu to open back up once I use something and wait for AP to build up...which works...IF walking around the battlefield to build AP up wasnt such a hassle. This annoys me so bad because I remember really like Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. I think they dropped the ball a bit on this one...

Glad to see you're enjoying Growlanser Generations. The original Growlanser (have you met Carmaine in Sense of Justice yet? He's the main character in Growlanser), which many consider the best in the series, was recently announced to be remade for PSP, but it doesn't look like it'll be localized since the last installment, Heritage of War, only sold around 6000 copies here, and PSP piracy is ridiculously rampant. I'm hoping Xseed or one of the other smaller publishers pick it up since Atlus seems to have an aversion for the PSP.

If you liked Growlanser, you might want to check out the developers' previous series, Langrisser. Only the first one was officially released here on Sega Genesis and retitled Warsong. Do you remember the large-scale war battles from Suikoden II? Well, the gameplay is just like that (in fact, that's what turned me to Suikoden II), so it does get a bit repetitive after a while. Der Langrisser, an SNES remake of Langrisser II, was recently translated completely by the emulation community. The only issue with it - and it's a fairly big one - is that it lacks challenge until late in the game, so you'd think to stick with Langrisser II for Genesis, but that one lacks the branching storylines of Der Langrisser! But I'd say either is still worth checking out, if nothing else, to see what might have inspired Growlanser. After all, Sense of Justice was actually a rush job since the success of the original Growlanser took Atlus completely by surprise, and I dare say it's better than the majority of JRPGs.

Currently, me and Odin Sphere are not being the best of friends

I want to finish that game, and I really enjoyed playing it. It's just that I feel like I'm bashing my head against a chunk of granite whenever I fire up the game, get myself killed a couple of times, and restart a level.

Don't get me wrong, the game does impress me... it's just that I want to choke a ho whenever I play that game.

And oh, I never got the whole FFVII thing.. and I know I'll get flak for this, but really, why care so much.

On other news, I still have an untouched copy of Crisis Core collecting dust somewhere. The Fiance was supposed to play that game, but I don't think she ever touch the PSP at all ever since I got it.

Oh console RPGs...never been a fan really. I guess Chrono Trigger/Super Mario RPG are about it. I prefer Western RPGs, but that's just me

Fallout Tactics, the game just gets slow, and annoying, same with NeverWinter Nights 1 that was a chore to play, you'd make progress and then find that the last 2 hrs you spent could have had a quicker and better outcome

Chore to play?

I just slogged through Star Ocean 4. It sucked. I have no idea why I managed to finish that piece of crap. Horrible voice acting and a script that was probably written by Uwe Boll.

Pretty much every Seiken Densetsu game that followed Secret of Mana. Although I guess "unimpressed" is less apt than "disappointed." A few were somewhat enjoyable (Legend in particular) but none could match SoM.

Oh, and Suikoden IV :bomb:

Enchanted Arms. That damn gayass character in your party (dont remember the name now) made it where I couldnt get past the first two hours (voice-acting was god-awful). Plus the game as a whole was starting too slow for me.

Final Fantasy X.

It's a fun game, but it's nowhere near as good as it's made out to be. The core gameplay is great, but I'm personally not a huge fan of the story or setting, and the cutscene dialogues and character animations are atrocious.

Final Fantasy X, Enchanted Arms, Suikoden IV...I agree with all those.

You hit the nail on the head with what is wrong with FFX. The setting and voice acting I think is "meh." Actually, Final Fantasy was VERY meh on the PS2, which I find odd. FFXIII looks amazing though.

Suikoden IV was kind of good but a huge disappointment, especially considering the other stellar games in the series.

sorry that's my favorite final fantasy.

for me it was ff7 that i could not stand. i know that's the like the gold standard, and i am not trolling, i just really did not see the what was so great about it, ff8 beat it on every level for me. of course IMHO.

Lost Odyssey...

Sometimes feels hopeful and enjoyable.
Sometimes I have to wake myself up.

The pacing is terrible...

But like a good car crash on the highway, you just have to get in the right lane to slow down and look threw all of it.

For me it's FFX. I bought both FFX and Persona 4 when I went to gamestop a month ago. I've sunk like 3 hours into FFX and about 50 hours into Persona 4. I need to put a hiatus on Persona 4 but it's so damn good D:

Many 360 owners consider either one of these games or all of them the best rpgs they've ever played. Oblivion is the worst out of the bunch, by far.

To the OP: I'm not saying you should or shouldn't like P3, but criticizing its level of character development when you're only 3 hours into the game seems like jumping the gun. Especially since the first 90 minutes are almost pure cutscene.

I don't get why people are ragging on FFX's voice acting or animation. Animation-wise, it was stellar at the time, and the voice-acting pleasantly surprised me. Sure, Tidus may have sounded like a dumb-blonde beach boy in the English version, but he sounded like one in the Japanese version too. And Wakka was SPOT-ON, I kid you not. As if both versions used the same actor, who just happened to be fluent in both languages.

I had no problem with the voice acting; the voices fit very well. My problem was with the actual dialogue, not how they said it. It was just terrible writing.
