Buy Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne?

CAGiversary!
As I am on a PS2 RPG roll as of late, I have just finished Persona 4 and was checking out some of the other games in the Shin Megami Tensei series. When I went by my local Gamestop over the past month I saw there was a Shin Megami Tensei game called SMT III: Nocturne. I had read up a little on it and it seems interesting.

Two questions...

1. Is it difficult?

2. Is it worth $39.99 used at Gamestop?

1. Not really in the traditional terms of "difficult." Just like you saw in P4, there are instant death spells and if your main character gets killed, it's game over. Some people will swear by the game's difficulty, but if you learn the system and abuse monster weaknesses in fights you shouldn't have a problem.

2. I think so, provided it's complete and in good condition. You could probably recoup most or all of that cost selling it when you're done.

I haven't played Nocturne, but if you want a taste of its gameplay style (with slightly more forgiving difficulty, based on what I've read) I recommend the Digital Devil Saga games. They can be tough, but with the right skills you'll have little problem. I enjoyed them immensely.

Nocturne's easily worth $40 in my opinion. It's pretty high up there on my favorite game of all time list, and probably my favorite PS2 game. As far as difficulty goes, I'd say it's above average in its difficulty, easily the hardest of PS2 Megaten games.

I paid around $55 used, although nearly mint, for mine. And don't regret it one bit. It's nice and gritty.

there is a sale on a new copy for $30, check the deals forum I just picked it up and cant wait for it to arrive

It's good, but going back from persona 4 it may not be as satisfying. P4 refined their systems a good deal, and the story in nocturne isn't exactly...good. That said, if you want more dungeons and demons/fusing you'll have fun. I would also say the combat is slightly harder than P4, it is still all about strategy, but in P4 it is much easier to come back from a mistake. In Nocturne you will die, I like to think that nocturne forces you to develop more creative strategies just to survive.

Nocturne is definitely worth $40. I do think it's one of the best RPGs for the PS2 and it does have some "OMG, what the heck happened?" moments.

It's good.
And worth buying new or used from anyone but GS.

GS screws people over. Have we not already learned this?
