Alaska CAGs?

Yeah, there are a few of us here, I started a thread like this over a year ago (see here http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194277). No one replied to your thread because there really aren't any deals to be had here so I don't think many of us look at the regional threads.

Get used to not being able to get in on many of the deals you see on CAG while living here. Many online places, especially Newegg, are out because of shipping, they will only do over night which is ridiculous. We can get the TRU deals but you need to act fast because they usually don't have many copies and then about a week after the items come out they jack up the prices. At TRU new releases are 68.99 a week after they are out and all accessories are higher, at Best Buy too, they run around $3-5 more.

Anyway if you ever need help with game stuff or shopping up here, or someone to play online with, send me a message.

Welcome to this dump. But hey it's not that bad, we got free national advertising for the town the other night with two murders on two episodes of Forensic Files.

Luckily I got the BX to fall back on if I need too. Just got here and I saw a few deals at the Target and Best Buy near the bases.
Got a quick question. Is there a good sports bar that shows football on Sundays and has the NFL ticket and a bunch of TVs to show the games? I went to Buffalo wild wings in San Antonio to watch my Pats but there doesn't seem to be one up here. Games starting at 9 a.m. is going to be trippy

The Peanut Farm on Old Seward http://wemustbenuts.com/ seems to be the place to hang out here in town. Alot of the other bars are dives and not what I think you are looking for (unless you like drunken knife fights). Any other questions feel free to ask.

I'm an Alaskan! too bad about the newegg shipping..the only deals I can really jump on are from amazon cuz I'm quite a ways from the nearest city

Fred Meyers, Soldotna, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 (360), $10.

The "clearance" section is pretty sad. Virtua Fighter 5 (360)
has been there for about 6 months, and it still costs $25.

Target, in Wasilla, has a few deals. The clearance section
is near the video game section. I got "Legends of WWF (360)
for $15.

There are a handful of thrift shops. In Soldotna, there's a Salvation
Army store. I found a sealed copy of Load Runner 2, on 3.5 floppy
disc. In a place called "Bargain Basement", in Kenai, I found a Sega
Saturn for $20. I have yet to test it. They have a good variety of
games from different systems, even some Atari carts.

"Oh my, you're from Alaska? I'm sorry, but we only ship 2-day air
to Alaska. What's this? A PO Box? I'm sorry, but we don't ship
to PO Boxes."

I really like Amazon. I've saved a bunch with their free shipping.
Sure, it may take a week or two, but it's free. Just time out your
shipments, and you'll have something to do while you wait.
From Amazon directly, most of the stuff can be shipped to a PO
Box, but some items can't. For those, I have a physical
address that they can ship to.

With the sites that only offer expensive shipping, you can normally
add a lot to your order before the shipping cost jumps a step.
I get from places like this is they have a really good deal, or a hard
to find game.

Fairbanksan here.

You're lucky you have Best Buy and TRU in Anchorage. I have to make due with the occasional Fred Meyer deal and Gamestop coupons. Still, I do OK when you factor in Amazon deals too.

Ever see the price of games in the Bush though? I had to go to Bethel for work last month and they were selling Halo 3 for $150!

Yea I've seen some of the crazioness on prices. I'm hoping to get ODST from TRU tommorrow and get that gift card.
Is there a good place in town to get a car detailed. Two weeks of driving through canada with kids made my van look like ass

Yeah, I don't get the two day only shipping to this place. I sell games on ebay all the time and it costs me about $1.80 through USPS for first class, so it is obviously available and cheap so I don't know how these companies get off on not using it.

Their loss, I just go through amazon. I have noticed on bigger items, like a console, I will get UPS ground even with the free shipping which is nice of them. Anyone ever have luck price matching at BB here, I've tried but they never seem to even know the deals in their own stores.

At least in Anchorage we have access to some of the stores. When I lived in Fairbanks from 97-00, I had to mail order everything because there was only Fred's who would get things weeks later or a local shop that would charge twice the price.

As far as car detailing, I don't know of any big companies that do that here, mostly small mom and pop type places you'll see around town. I usually don't bother, in a week my jeep is usually just as dirty again. Maybe there is a place on your base that can do it.

Welcome to town.
I did the ODST deal at TRU with no problem
Yeah, they do come through with the good deals on release week, but as you may have noticed most of the new games that have been out a little while are in the $65 to $68 range, and the accessories are really overpriced.

Have fun with it.
Any good place in town to buy install snow tires
Johnsons is the main store in town for that, also on Old Seward down toward Dimond mall there is a place called American Tire that has good service. Stay away from Sears, they'll have your vehicle for days.
lived there for 20 years till 2007. Returning there in 2009 or 2010. I guess it's where I (we) belong.
You can have it, lived in Anchorage for 1.5 and Fairbanks for 3 years, had enough. I'm moving back to Ohio next summer.

Lol. Some people are just made to live in Alaska, others not so much. Been here a few years now, absolutely hate it. Leaving once I finish college.

I just miss different restaurants and amenities, well and culture, ok civilzation. I would kill someone for some white castles about right now, I'm getting too old to keep going without all the different things I like, so I hear ya, time to get the hell out of dodge.

Nice to see others from the Last Frontier on the site. I'm also from Anchorage but attend college at UAF up in Fairbanks.

Four months in and I'm digging the place. I grew up in Maine so a little bit of rural doesn't bug me. Although Anchorage has enough going on. The shipping issues with some companies is a pain in the ass.

What part of Maine are you from? I've lived there twice, once in Machias for 3 years and once in South Portland for 3 as well.

Yeah, shipping is a pain, especially New Egg, they really try and screw us with only offering 2nd day fed ex. I called to complain and they say they only offer that because they want to insure customers get stuff in a timely manner. Whatever, most other companies have no problem using USPS.

I've just decided to not order anything from Newegg until they get their act together in regards to shipping. $30 for shipping a 360 game is just plain stupid, but lucky for us Amazon ships for free on most gaming items

It just blows because New Egg has been home to some great deals lately. Amazon was very good to me during the holiday season

Absolutely agree. I've also been able to get free shipping from GameFly on those deals they have, which was a bit surprising to me. Along with eBay, those are my go-to sites

I'm in Fairbanks for a week for work, it's definitely different here. I went to Fred Meyer seeking some of these famous clearances I see on CAG from time to time, but everything really is pricier here.

So what should I do while I'm here? I'd like to get out and see some sights, but everything seems to be snowed out. Had some Alaskan Amber last night on draft that was pretty decent while doing emails. I also seem to have run into the one effing Alabama fan wearing a hoodie that talked smack to me while wearing my Auburn jacket. Even in Alaska, I can't escape the stupidity of the mullet Tide.. sheesh.

You should hit up Skinny Dicks Halfway Inn on mile 328 on the Parks Highway. Once in awhile they have pornstars (female) drop in as a special treat! Try and drop in on the dorms at UAF, maybe soemthing going down there. Not much else happening in the town, it is the arctic.

Just wanted to let you all know Movie Gallery on east Northen Lights in anchorage is going out of business and everything is 50% off. There are only 3 days left, there is a small selection of games (mostly ps2) and some movies left.
