Legend Of Shadow

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Legend of Shadow is a fun freeware remake of Legend of Kage, Taito's underrated ninja platformer for the NES. In the crowded field of remakes, LOS still manages to stand out from most of the rest because it is that rarest kind of game: a remake that is better and more fun than the original commercial game. Like in the original Legend of Kage, you play a samurai who must rescue a princess kidnapped by (naturally) evil ninjas. Along the way, you will fight endless waves of ninjas that will throw shurikens and lunge at you from every direction.

Cult

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Mystery

Cult is a freeware game by Lee Blum.
Using negotiation and trade, one must resolve a situation involving barricaded cultists in a villa two kilometers away from town.

As you play, you wander around the villa, meeting some of the brainwashed cult members (and some reasonable people). You talk to them, find out what they want, and trade items with them for information. You learn a little about the social structure of the cult and even get to save some lives. Advancing from room to room, you find keys to locked doors and operate switches to remove barriers.

Today we witness too much blood in games when we want to solve problems. As the author of this game, living in the middle east, I want to show that problems can be solved by negotiation, and bloodshed can be avoided. There should be some games that portray negotiation as a peaceful - and viable - solution.

Dan Da Dan

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

Dan! Da! Dan! is an odd shoot 'em up. And I mean that in the best possible way. Not only does it manage to be totally addictive it also manages to come off as a complete original in its field. There seems to be a growing breed of 'abstract' freeware shoot 'em ups, where you don't shoot the usual barrage of enemy space ships, but rather beams of light or different objects, or in this case large colored blocks.

Theme: Science Fiction

Two is a vertical shoot them up with some new facts: You must destroy the red aliens with red lazers and blue aliens with blue lazers! A level editor is also included to make your own levels. Don't forget to post them on the forum of the site. We will make a section to download them on bgames site later.

Yes. It's been remade a few times in FLASH. Has their been any recent remakes that work on XP and higher without dosbox - Not that I know of.

Outbound

Shooter/Top Down
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

An impressive looking multi-directional shoot 'em up, in which you control a mech. The gameplay isn't quite as developed as it could be but still enjoyable nonetheless.

Megazell's Comment - This game reminds of those OLD mechwarrior games that came out for the consoles. Except this one is not as horrible. The controls on KB can be a little stiff but those of us with gamepads and Joy2key will not feel any of the hindering at all. Great shooter game.

Head Over Heels

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Head Over Heels was released, um, a while ago. Around about 1987 if I recall correctly and it was immediately praised in the press as being quite the bestest thing ever. Not only was it a huge game for it's time, it also had great graphics and was very addictive - if somewhat punishing in its difficulty level. The variety in the locations was amazing and the challenges brilliantly designed. Quite rightly it was awarded with pretty much every accolade that could be bestowed upon it by the various magazines. Even today it still stands as a brilliantly designed title and has never really been bettered in the isometric adventure genre.

This version is a pretty darn faithful remake of the Speccy original except with a few spanking extra bits grafted on like a save system and subliminal flashes of erotic art (if I have my way!). I should perhaps tell you a bit about the team who's making the game. I'm the one responsible for the graphics (apart from the lovely logo which you see adorning this site) and I'm Graham Goring.

The programming is by the very talented Tomaz Kac (who only wrote this game because of a hastily scrawled diagram posted on the Retrospec mailing list about how you can't properly sort isometric games without complex masking), the excellent music is by Dorian Black (who I understand has a picture of an old man in his loft - ha ha ha!) and this website and the games' logo is by Pierre Jovanovic.

Other contributors are James Curry, Kakarot, Milos Babovic, Metka Jostl and Sir Dave-O whose beta testing has been invaluable in both ironing out the programming bugs and also refining the layout of some of the rooms due to the handling being ever so slightly different to the Spectrum version.

On a personal note I've also been encouraged by all the lovely people at the pixelation forum (pixelation.swoo.net) and of course the other members of Retrospec who have now grudgingly accepted that I can actually draw fairly good graphics.

Star Wars - Fleet Commander - Clone Wars

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

SW FC Clone Wars is a fast paced shooting game playing during the time of the Clone Wars. Your mission is to defend a narrow canyon passage against an evergrowing army of enemy battle droids. With each attacking wave your enemy becomes stronger and stronger.

How long can you stand the attacks?

Megazell's Comment - This game plays more like a RTS then a shooter. You have to deploy your troops when needed and before the enemy over takes your area. You have very little control over your troops much like the game 'Majesty.' It's a solid try for strategy and Star Wars fans.

Command and Conquer - Tiberian Sun
Command and Conquer - Firestorm

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

THE BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE HAS BEGUN!

Set in the early 21st century, Tiberian Sun once again pits the Global Defense Initiative against the Brotherhood of Nod in a struggle for control of the planet. With an epic storyline that unfolds as play progresses, players learn the reasons behind the worldwide outbreak of Tiberium and what happened to the notorious Nod leader Kane, who was presumed dead at the end of the first Command & Conquer.
KANE IS DEAD. A NEW ENEMY HAS EMERGED.

It's time to head up the Firestorm task force. Nod's experiments have unknowingly released a horde of cybernetic nightmares upon the world. As GDI and Nod scramble to save themselves, they realize their only salvation lies in the unthinkable.

Megazell's Comment - You can also DL Tiberian Dawn - Which is much like GOLD but with more content.

May not work properly with Windows Vista and higher.

Sir Lancealot

Action
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

The game was originally written as a 16KB game for the ZX Spectrum in 1984.

Sir Lancelot has always been one of my favorite platform games and I decided that it would be my entry for the “Retro Remakes Competition 2004“. I was lucky enough that the judges liked the game and it received an 11th place out of 76 games.

But this was not “just” my entry – it was also the first game I’ve finished and believe me – I’m a lot better at starting projects than to finish them, so I’ve definitely started more than one game over the years……..but this is the first finished game. Yeah.

I just made it to 2nd encounter with the Boxer in 'The Power' - This game is really good. One of the best platform shooters I have played in a bit since Iji.

Megazell,
Do you know of any problems Full Spectrum Warrior has with Windows 7? I installed it last night and the installation went through, but when I try to play the game I double click the icon and it just cycles and never loads. I've tried it in every compatibility mode available and neither works.

Any help would be appreciated. I might have to just try it on my desktop that has XP on it.

Sorry, I took so long to respond. I totally forgot about this until now.

That game does have a patch for it out that makes it work for Windows 7. The only thing is that is only available to those that purchase it on STEAM at this time.

I have Searchbot looking for it. If you find it let me know.

i dont normally register to these types of forums, and altho im only up to page 7 on this thread, when i saw that the opening poster was online i had to register just to give my thanks - even if i havent found 'that' game i want to play yet.

My pc's very low spec, so finding mmorpg's to play is kinda hard at the best of times, because of this i have been stuck on the same sort of game for the past 8 years nearly, im unsure if its on this thread as im still reading through it (its called The Legend Of Mir 2 / The Legend of Mir3) both are FTP so if you havent tried them you might want to give them a go :)

Whilst im looking through the 30 or so pages i have left to view, could u suggest any mmorpg's for me to play? (that my peice of shit pc will allow me to)

Processor : Intel® Celeron® CPU 2.93GHZ
Memory : 190MB

im not sure if i have a gfx card, when i do dxdiag, in the display tab it says ;

Name ; VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
DAC type : internal
total approx memeory : 64mb

does this mean i have a 64mb gfx card?

If you go to the Spotlight section - There is a link to a website called 'Can you run it?' it will help you find games that your machine can play.

If you are ONLY going to stay in the MMORPG arena - There are a ton of games that I posted. I think only the only 2 you can not play at all would be 'Age Of Conan' and 'MegaTen' as those games are extremely beautiful and require beefy rigs.

The are some great 2D MMORPGs that I posted like 'Dungeon Fighter' that only reason I don't play that game anymore is because the one friend that I played it with got shipped off to the war and we will continue when she is free to do so or when she returns.

Your video card has these specs

Name: VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
Manufacturer: VIA/S3G
Chip Type: VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
DAX Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 64.0 MB

Looks like you have an HP. When you are ready to upgrade - There are many on this forum that can help you get a great rig for cheap.

If you are willing to clip coupons and abuse rebate programs like me - You can get a beefy rig for under $400.

My last rig was this one.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720
MB: MSI DKA790GX
RAM: Kingston HyperX 4GB
Videocard: HIS Radeon 4870 512MB
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 500 Black x 4
PSU: Rosewill RP550V2-S-SL
Case: Antec Skeleton PC Case
OS: Windows XP Professional SP 3 (Gamer Edits) and Ubuntu 9.10 (Gamer Edits)

NO DVD Drive, NO CD-ROM - I do everything via USB or download.

Total cost after rebates and coupons: $188.93

^ You may not want to go my route but you get the point.

PS - Yes I know that Mir (all versions) are free. Most players on this forum are asking for less MMORPGs but when I revisit that game soon...I may post it up. I had it posted on my original list on a long Dead PCGamer Forums.

My problem is every mmo i try, i make too many comparisons to mir, and for some strange reason can never play them longer than a day and soon find myself back on boring old mir lol.

As for getting a new rig, its not something i can afford to do atm and in england we dont get those rebate thing's your talking about :P

i dont quite know what u meant by ''Looks like you have an HP'', do you mean a hewlett packard?

edit - i dont think dungeon fighters is my cup of tea, any suggestions for a mir-type feel game would be appreciated (2d/2.5d isometric as opposed to fully 3d)

When it comes to MMORPGs, I'm probably the wrong one to ask. Hopefully, others will answer the call.

HP as in Hewlett Packard - Yes - That chipset was used quite often in their rigs.
