Heroes Rise: The Prodigy
Choice of Zombies
Choice of Intrigues
Choice of the Vampire
Choice of Romance
Choice of Broadsides
Choice of the Dragon

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Heroes Rise: The Prodigy is an interactive fiction game for PC, Kindle, iOS, Android, and Linux. You play as a young would-be hero, in the Powered world of Millennia City, but when the game opens, you are an underpaid, part-time videogame tester, so low-level the execs don’t even know your name. (I’ve actually been in that position, and I loved the industry nod from author Zachary Sergi.) Since your famous Powered parents were jailed after a botched operation, you’ve been living quietly with your gardening Grandma, under an assumed name. But all that will change when you get your hero’s license….

The game is a text-based adventure, using ChoiceScript, in the vein of Choice of Romance, and Choice of the Vampire. I love interactive fiction games. I’ve played a lot of Adventure, Zork, and similar text-only games, so I’ve spend a lot of time trying to open doors with Use Key, Turn Key, Unlock Door, and Use Key With Lock where Use Key In Door was required. ChoiceScript, though, avoids the most frustrating part of IF games by providing multiple choice options instead of asking users to enter text.

Heroes Rise presents a scene, with full descriptions and developed characters, and asks the player how they react to that scene. Do you want to fight defensively, offensively, or with total disregard for any collateral damage? Do you want to work with the police or avoid them? Be polite or a brat? Do you follow the laws for Powered heroes all of the time, or only when they line up with your plans anyway, or do you and your Powers deliberately flout the laws of basic humans?

Good gameplay has been described as “a series of interesting decisions”, and Heroes Rise moves beyond an electronic version of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book by asking players about their motivations as they make choices. Are you taking this on to rid the world of evil, get revenge, make money or get famous? This aspect makes it easier to connect with one’s character, and adds to that willing suspension of disbelief that all good superhero stories require.

Identifying with one’s character is quite easy, after you’ve chosen your name and gender, customized your herosuit and powerset, and chosen a personality for your omnipresent MeChip virtual assistant. You also impact interpersonal relationships by the dialogue you choose, making the characters and relationships so much more engaging.

My only complaint is a common ChoiceScript annoyance. I couldn’t find anyway to save the game partway through, besides leaving open the browser window in which I was playing the game, an inelegant but effective workaround. It’s not always practical to play through in one sitting. I was also frustrated when I got to particularly interesting narrative forks, and wanted to save the game at that point, and try the second one later. It didn’t seem like fun to try to remember everything I’d done to get to this stage in order to recreate my existing game, and then try the other choice.

Overall, Heroes Rise: The Prodigy is a great interactive superhero adventure story. With the Kindle or iPad edition, this is a grown-up and streamlined version of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure paperbacks we read in grade school. - IndieGameMag

Beta - Castlevania - The Bloodletting - Beta

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

Any die hard Castlevania fan will know that there is an unreleased game for the Sega 32X that was canceled called Castlevania - The Bloodletting. The Sega 32X was not selling well and Konami feared to release the game on it, so they reworked what they had and made Symphony of the Night.

1846, just two years after the man-wolf Cornell defeated Count Dracula the countryside basked in peace and prosperity. The darkness of the land had been lifted and all was well. But on a beautiful easter evening as the people of the land celebrated, a shadow loomed in the distance. It brought forth madness and chaos and the evil in men's hearts returned.

Harker Belmont, the son of Richter Belmont and the heir to the Vampire Killer returned home to find the village in flames and the evil servants of Dracula endlessly slaughtering the villagers. In the distance, he saw Dracula's castle. Knowing the tribulations he was about to face, he set out for the castle with only his whip and courage. Harker prayed for the guidance of God and the power of his father Richter, of which whom died ten years earlier, to seal Dracula away for eternity. All the while, a lone question lingered in his mind. Why is Dracula alive and who resurrected him?

How difficult did Castlevania appear to be, Mega?

It plays very very well...it's as hard as the games from the NES. The enemies never stop coming and the hits knock you back right when you are about to jump over a hole...so you need to have your secondary weapons up and running. When you die your whip gets reset back to leather so you do little to no damage to some enemies so you have to bust them candles to get back to full power. Lots of secret areas too.

Demo - Goliath - Demo

Vehicular Combat/Simulation
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Goliath is a team-based vehicle action game. The player takes on the role of one of 16 human or AI controlled vehicles known as the Road Warriors defending a world under siege from an enormous and seemingly indestructible tank known as the Goliath. The player has a choice between multiple vehicle types, ranging from agile dune buggies to heavily armored trucks, and multiple weapons.

While the long-term objective of the Road Warriors is to destroy the Goliath, the player will have to manage a number of objectives such as rebuilding factories (to produce the different types of vehicles available to the player) and protecting other buildings and vehicles in the game.

Goliath is playable single-player or with up to 16 players in multiplayer. The multiplayer mode is co-op and is identical to single player mode. Players may join a multiplayer game already in progress and replace one of the existing AI controlled Road Warriors, ensuring 16 Road Warriors are present in the game at all times.

Megazell's Comment - The file says demo. The game is complete and abandoned.

I'm sorry, the Goliath 'demo' was the end result of a student project and full development was never the intention. While we did discuss it for a while at the end of the course, there was never any real likelihood of it becoming a full game.
It wasn't a complete waste though, a lot of people enjoyed it, it won a few awards and a number of the developers gained employment as a result. - Robert Green

I say if you like vehicle combat games...to really check this bad boy out. Also, the online feature is well made. You will probably have to setup a game night with strangers or a friend. This would be a top pick if it did not have the demo label on it.

I think I played that one already and something was wrong with it. Not sure. I played A LOT of Megaman clones on the PC that I thought were trash. I will give that one a go and make sure.

I have my eye on several projects that are about to go freeware...here are some of the Megaman games I am waiting for to have a final release...

and

They are both still in alpha/beta phase and really incomplete. But when they are done I will post them up.

Flyout is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up written for the Shmup-Dev Autofire 2007 competition, ending up at a tied 9th place out of 16. To keep up you should try to collect the ship upgrades provided by stranded Dutch pilots! These guys appear around every kilometer unless the maximum upgrade level of 5 has already been reached. The distance travelled can be seen in the bottom-left corner of the screen. The ship is controlled using the arrow keys and space bar (alternative fire buttons are Z and Ctrl), music can be toggled on/off using M. Eyeball 3

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Weird

====
INFO
====

This game was made as an entry for the retroremakes.com Top Down 2D Dungeon Mini Comp Challenge. Also don't sell it or steal the graphics.

=======
"STORY"
=======

Our hero, the enigmatic Eye McBall has been forced to team up with his former nemesis/doppelganger Ball McEye in order to combat a far greater threat- The shadow lord king, controller of the monsters from the non-canonical Eyeball 1 who also happen to appear in this game.

========================
CONTROLS & GAMEPLAY INFO
========================

Gameplay in Eyeball 3 is kind of confusing and frankly it might be better to just try it out instead of reading this section. The main thing you need to know is that the game is controlled entirely by mouse.

Eyeball 3 is divides the screen into two sides, with Eye McBall on the left and Ball McEye on the right. Which eyeball you control is decided by which half of the screen your cursor is on. The left mouse button can be used to move the Eyeball on the side of the screen your cursor is on towards where you are clicking. The alternate Eyeball will automatically move in the opposite direction.

Attacking and defending is handled with the right mouse button. Holding the right mouse button down on an eyeball will cause a shield to generate around it regardless of whether the eyeball is selected or not. This shield decreases damage to the eyeball but also damages enemies that collide with it significantly. Right clicking anywhere else will activate some sort of eye beam from the eyeball you currently have selected.

A health bar shared by both eyeballs can be seen at the top of the screen. It should be noted that the eyeballs are damaged by enemies of a different color upon collision, but are healed upon collision with enemies of the same color. This is the only way to regain health in the game.

Finally, there are various different barriers in Eyeball 3, all of which behave in different ways. Experiment.

Megazell's Comment - Weird little game but it is well worth the play time the game is VERY confusing at first but after a few tries you will get the hang of it and odd sense of reward will replace the confusion. I found myself going 'Yay' verbally in rl when I got further and further along in the game :)

Not sure if anyone else has tried 'Area 51' the FPS I posted early on in this thread but as of late I've been playing it online with some old college chums...that game is an OK shooter but the online portion is rather funny.

I say that because when you kill someone the screams they let sound ridiculous. Been playing Team Deathmatch and it's decent enough but the animation and screams alone had my entire team yucking it up...no we were not high ;)

Website Spotlight

Posted Image

Kongregate is a website that allows users to upload user-created Adobe Flash or Adobe Director games. It features an API that flash developers can integrate into their games which allows users to submit high scores and in some games, earn achievement badges. Badges and local score submissions are only available on games whose developers choose to use the Kongregate API.

The site was created in June 2006 by sister and brother team Emily and Jim Greer. The site was initially run through a testing phase which lasted until December 2006. During this time, game developers and players tested the site's interface and functionality. In December of the same year, the site was formally opened to the public. The site formally entered the beta testing phase on March 22, 2007.

The Kongregate website itself was designed by Happy Cog Studios.

As of July 2008, Kongregate has raised around $9 million in capital from investments by Reid Hoffman, Jeff Clavier, Jeff Bezos, and Greylock Partners.

In July 2010, GameStop announced an agreement to acquire Kongregate

You control an elastic ball who is after the love of his life, both looking suspiciously like a gaming royalty couple from the early 80's. To clear a room, simply make your way past the traps and touch the red flag to progress. None of the challenges are particularly hard, but to unlock everything you will have to complete the entire game without skipping any stages.

Megazell's Comment - I had a few PMs from the previous Yoyo games I posted up. If you scroll down there is a 'Download this game now' link for you to install the game and keep. Yoyo games just happens to also put the game in a flash mode also. This game is good. The screen is a little small but it's not a big issue :)

Theme: Science Fiction

De Blob is an amazing project by students at the Utrecht School of the Arts and Utrecht University. The game was developed by a team of 9 in just four months, with everyone working minimal hours alongside other obligations. The output is tremendous. Joost van Dongen, the lead programmer, describes the game as:

It is a 3D game in which the player controls a ball of paint rolling through the city. The ball can absorb colored NPC's to become larger and change its color. With the paint, the player can then proceed to paint the entire city. Almost everything is paint-able: buildings, trees, cars and using the paint trace even the ground. The main goal of the game is to paint all 17 landmark buildings. Hardcore fanatics can also try to collect all 50 coins that are hidden around the level.

Megazell's Comment - This game is runs so smooth...you will feel like you paid for it. Excellent excellent excellent!

Bonesaw
Megazell's Top Pick

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Bonesaw: The Game is an independent 2d side-scrolling game that mixes elements from puzzle, beat-em-up, and platforming genres. The game's central theme revolves around Clarkson University, and the University's hockey team The Golden Knights.

The game does not take place at Clarkson, nor will you see levels that are taken from campus. Although these ideas came to mind, I felt that the game would be more widely accepted if the game wasn't tied down with endless inside jokes that only a handful of people would appreciate.

The player takes on the role of a lone Golden Knight who must save the rest of the team from an evil Referee who has taken them hostage in his inter-dimensional penalty box... in space. With over 30 levels, a ton of collectibles, and some side things to do, this game will be pretty big.

Megazell's Comment - MAN! I can not believe I had forgotten about this game. It was not until my kid started playing it today that I was like...'Did I post this?'...Anyway, This is an excellent platform game with a funny/interesting story. I can be a bonehead sometimes :)

The Desolate Room

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

To say that The Desolate Room is not your typical RPG would be an understatement. I’m actually having trouble deciding what I should say in this post, because I don’t want to spoil the experience for you.

I’ll say this much: the game “happens” in three different places. The first is an island, where a lonely, egg-obsessed coffee machine robot resides. The second place is a virtual world. The third is the past… in the memories of other, long-dead robots. The way the coffee robot, the long-dead robots, and the three places connect to each other is a great bit of storytelling. It’s not complex or anything… just thoughtful and well-done.

The game begins on the island, and you play as the coffee robot. PLEASE don’t let the rather mundane fetch quests in the first part of the game (or the overall clunkiness of its presentation) deter you from continuing! It picks up quite quickly from then on and I promise that (some of) you will really dig the battle/experience system, which is evenly-paced and quite satisfying (and a little overwhelming at first).

If you are at all interested in RPG’s or unique, emotional narratives, this game is worth a look for you. It’s sad and strange and not a little bit scary. When you realize what the title of the game means, it’s a genuinely chilling moment. I’ll be thinking about this game for a while. -TigForum

Megazell's Comment - I have posted some of Scottsgames before. They are simply awesome. Though this game is short it makes up for it length with the actual experience and wonderful art.

Punishment
Punishment: The Punishing

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

Punishment

Punishment is an assault to the senses, a punishingly difficult platform game that continually alters the player's perception.

It's the gaming equivalent of spinning around until you're dizzy and then trying to walk in a straight line... and as a bonus, there's a level that features a giant, smiling portrait of Shigeru Miyamoto in the background.

Punishment: The Punishing

Flip the switches to climb the tower. Every new floor resets the switches. 1-2 players co-operative. Original music by Brandon Rosenbluth.

Megazell's Comment - The titles says it all. This is a platform game that is meant to punish you for playing it....Seriously.

Nice. Here is a "de-make" of Megaman 7 from SNES to fit the style of the 8-bit NES games.

Rockman 7

Looks like the one I played was a beta. Going to post this game tomorrow. Currently, I have 35 more games to post but I am really tired today...could be a flu or something.
