Back To Bed

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Weird

Dreams are weird. When you’re in them, everything makes perfect sense: eyeball monsters, people with praying mantis bodies, random celebrities just hanging out in your living room – who are, in turn, also eyeball-coated praying mantis demons. It’s all just so matter-of-fact. And then you wake up, chuckle dryly at the ridiculousness of it all, and drive to your therapy session. That’s more or less the feeling Back To Bed attempts to capture, and it does so shockingly well in the grand scheme of trippy dream sequence games.

You play as the “subconscious protector” of a man named Bob who can’t stop sleepwalking to his untimely demise. And yeah, there are melting clocks everywhere and tophat birds that I wish were real so I could have one as a pet, but the real stars here are the little things. The vaguely unsettling, word-slurring narrator, for instance, won’t be mistaken for Rucks from Bastion any time soon. Puzzles, meanwhile, give your spatial reasoning brain biceps quite a workout – though the perspective caused me to put objects in the wrong places a few times. Beyond minor frustrations, however, it’s a fun, semi-demented little puzzler with a bizarre sense of style. - RPS.com

Megazell's Comment - This is now the 4th game I posted that allows you to use a Wii remote settings. Most ppl don't know but there are motion controllers for the PC. In fact they been around since the late 90's. Action XL is one of the cheapest and can be found for as low as $14.99 in some circles. I don't usually play with them must but the kids like them a lot. Especially for games like this one and others on this list like 'De Blob'.

Hey,

Hope you find something you like. When it comes to my favorite games I usually put on the top of the post 'Megazell's Top Pick' - Which means this is a game that I enjoy playing quite often.

There are a ton on this list.

Currently, I am enjoying Quake Live to quench my FPS thirst. Bonesaw would be my favorite platformer...there are quite a few as you go through the list you will see plenty that I have highlighted.

In case you did not know - Use the front page to take a look at all of the game listed by genre and in alphabetical order along with spotlights on websites and software to help making PC gaming better.

Thanks. Yeah I saw you labeling some that you like, just wondering if you had a top list since there's so many, lol. I've looked around the net and there's a lot of different games with a few standouts that almost everyone lists, like Cave Story.

Yeah, I do have a list but it changes month to month as I end a game and move on. I am very much into short games.

I will say this if you like 2D platform games and surreal horror games try 1213. It's one of the finer games out there that seems to be over looked.

RTS - Try 'Attack Of The Paper Zombies' to this day I have yet to defeat the last mission it is very very brutal.

Cave Story is a great game but it's not my favorite. When I have time I will post up my top 10...I was asked that before on here and I did put up my list at the time but most of those games I have completed.

Thanks, I would be interested to see what your favorites are. I am like you though, I'm into short games with good replay-ability. I'm not really into Real time strategy, unless its RTS lite or something where its really easy to pick up and play.

I found a good site with a HUGE database of indie (mostly freeware) games that people can review, the forums and regular home page for it is pretty great as well:

http://db.tigsource.com/top?page=1

You may already know of that site, but its pretty good.

That is an excellent site and yes I do use it quite often. You will find my name here and there with reviews and comments on many of the freeware titles. Also this thread is listed under there links section for 'Freeware Games.'

The only thing - like many other sites of that nature is that many of the links are outdated but with a quick Google search using the already provided name of the game and author you will find a newer source soon enough.

Currently they list 438 free and legal games many of which have already been posted here with the exception of their text based games.

Also, check out the RTS section - There are plenty of pick up and go RTS games the one I mentioned is a good and easy one to pick up but just hard to master like all good games.

I'm not much of a RTS guy so I doubt I ever try any. The only one I really wanted to try was Company of Heroes, because I'm a little bit of a war buff and love historical stuff about that era. I don't know if there are many freeware WWII games out there.

In the end, I guess I'm just pretty casual when it comes to most PC games. I like short pick up and play stuff. That ROM Check Fail game looks pretty cool. I would also like to try the SoR remake because I liked playing those games on the Genesis collection on 360 last year, although I'm kind of wary of "unofficial" remakes.

Have you tried out this game? It's flash, but it's so awesome, and is exactly the type of game I have fun with and look for:

Trust me, SoRR is EXCELLENT. I played all of the original games as a kid on the Genesis when they released. That is one of the games that when I have company come over they always want to play. It mixes and merges all of the SOR series seemingly into a great yarn.

There is a great story behind that remake of that freeware title but I will let you discover it. Don't forget that many of the freeware games here use to be retail and the publishers and/or developers released them to the public for free as a sign of some anniversary or just give back to the gaming community so don't fret about enjoying these gems.

Off the top of my head, I don't remember any specific WWII game but I do know that some are here. I tend to avoid that genre of games because of it's overexposure.

On that flash game yeah I played that one I tend to extract those games and install them so I don't have to be online and then use Joy2Key so that I can play via gamepads.

TimeFcuk is my favorite flash game...look that one up ;)

Tiny Timmy and Big Bill

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Tiny Timmy and Big Bill is a polished, quirky, endearing Ludum Dare 23 entry. Big Bill is controlled with the mouse, while Tiny Timmy is controlled with the keyboard. Collect all the mustaches to advance to the next level. Tiny Timmy is able to do this by jumping off Big Bill's shoulder to navigate bench tops. He can also land on Big Bill's hand, which can be controlled to reach higher or lower places. Big Bill must protect Tiny Timmy from enemies by clenching his fist and knocking them off screen.

While the controls may take some getting used to, the beauty of this game lies in the way that Bill and Timmy co-operate to navigate the house.

Hakaiman

Shooter/Top Down
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Urban Warfare

Hakaiman is superb. You’re a commando armed with nothing but a gun, some grenades, and your own two fists. You sneak around the levels from an isometric top down perspective and try to kill people and take things. The controls are smooth, the levels are challenging yet fun, and—despite being a shooter—the game plays very much like a puzzler. Sure, reflexes are involved, but you’ll depend on them much less if you can figure out the right approach to each group of enemies (is it better to come in back through the window? try to toss a grenade inside? or lure the guards out with sounds and shoot them as they come through door?)

Yes, nothing is in english, but the controls are simple: arrow keys move, shift is shoot (or punch, if your gun isn’t out) z is reload (or throw grenade if your gun isn’t out) and x is switch between gun and fists. Punching crates breaks them, and punching items picks them up. Anything that flashes needs to be either used or blown up. You’ll figure it out.
Excellent design, not a single complaint. It’s free and small, try it out.

Megazell, what program(s) are you using to download/play Flash movies/games? I've been wanting to do this for quite some time, but never got around to finding a program.

The Last Dance
Megazell's Top Pick

Thrid Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Crime
Theme: Noir

The Last Dance is a third person shooter very similar to the shooting parts of Uncharted that takes place in a fictional world set on Chicago 30's. A dirty place full of mafia men to punish and a vengeance that will be the redemption to John McClain, the main character.

In a Frank Miller’s comic style, we'll be an ex police officer, who desesperately tries to find answers about the murder of his beloved wife, Gladys, shooting them to death or fighting with his own hands if necessary. The night is ready to turn red and the revenge is around every corner. All starts with a new clue... the old harbour of Chicago is hiding something.

Megazell's Comment - Most of the game is in Spanish but you should be able to navigate it and play with no problem since it's very intuitive. It has input gamepad support and instructions in eng PDF that should be read before playing.

System Requirements

OS: Windows XP or higher
CPU: 2.3 Ghz
Memory: 1.5 Gb
Video: 512 Mb
Hard Drive: 579 Mb

Plasma Pong

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Gamepad Support - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

Plasma Pong is a variant of the popular PONG game, with a high tech twist--it uses computational fluid dynamics to drive the environment. As the game starts you will have to duke it out against the opposing paddle, using the fluid as your weapon. You can shoot plasma out of the paddle to push the fluid around, which in turn pushes the ball around. Another weapon at your disposal is the ability to suction fluid back into your paddle. By doing this, possession of the ball can be controlled by the player. Once the ball is fully sucked into the paddle you can blast the ball across to the opposing player's side. After scoring against the opponent, you will "Level Up," and the game mechanics will become more difficult. The ball will be more reactive to the fluid, making it much more unpredictable. Lose the ball and you will lose a life. Lose 10 lives and it's game over.
