City Of Heroes was one of the few games that I devoted a lot of time to it. I spoke about it in another thread here on CAG. To this day it has a lot of good things going like the ability to exmp down to an earlier level so that you can play with a new player/friend without them getting a negative penalty. I believe all MMORPG should have that. When they took out base raids it was a dead game for me and my crew.

Hopefully, Champions whets my appetite for sci-fi MMORPG gaming because a lot of other MMORPGs are great but sooner or later because they are fantasy based I lose interest.

Same here. I've been continually searching for a good, non fantasy based MMO to occupy my time a bit from the usual WoW. I loved the character customization, and like I you said, the team that worked on CoH - for lack of inspiration or some other reason - began to nerf and alter core gameplay mechanics which gamers/users loved and really enjoyed. I used to PL/play with my cousins and lots of other people because you could go down that level. Base raids were major fun and I loved how if you were a good, decent tank you could round up/corral an entire level for your group, bringing them back to the start and then just pummel on them without having to run through the level as much.

By the way, that Last Stand game sounds brilliant. I can't believe that concept hasn't been pushed harder in the FPS scene - the merger of a tower defense game and FPS. It just sounds like the perfect combination. Even if that Digipen team didn't execute to the level of a multi-million dollar team, the concept alone sounds fascinating and I can't wait until I test it out now.

You mentioned you donated some funds to some of these indie developers, I hope you don't mind my asking, but which ones did you choose?

I donated to SigmaTeam (Return Of The Hero), TecknoPants (Shoot First) and a few others. Some of the donations came back. Turned out that many of the developers no longer take donation. For example - Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw no longer takes donates for his games. I was trying to donate for his game 1213 which was a extremely well made game. Out of $100 that I got from Megaupload I donated $15 so far. I plan to re-donate the other $85 to some other game makers.

----

As for COH, I was never into the PL/Farming scene...In fact, I use to go against it and run missions in PI with a bind that read 'LvL 50+ Missions - PST - LvL 47 Min - No Fillers - No Dual Accounts.' I had a bind to auto respond if they were under lvl 47 and if they sent another tell after that 'begging' I auto-added them to my ignore list :) I use to run missions in under 2 to 3 mins - With defeat alls. I really like that game because with the EXCEPTION of the Statesman's Taskforce you can run any Task Force, Trial and/or Missions with any team configuration...No healer...No Problem...No Tank...No Problem. There were multiple options for dealing with mobs. I spent most of my lvl 50 life in PI and/or Shadow Shard teaming with ppl and setting up TF for rewards and/or special drops. When I left that game with my main (no alts) I had 36 billion influence (left over bug from issue 6 that allowed some people to break the cap), fully slotted out purples and over 585+ badges. It truly is a treat to play at any level with a little help from a friend but the amount of ABUSE that system was taking and the lack of base raids made it really dull really fast.

At one point, during a Faathim the Kind Task Force, my sg took care of the missions fast. We got the to final mission after 36 minutes. A pug healer player we invited because he was new to the zone and needed the badges finally got to the door. We get in to the final god and we tell him the plan. So we told him to run RA while he attacks and what not on our blasters because he had no tank...in the middle of combat he tells us he does not know what RA is and he just started the game 3 days ago and PL to 50 and did not know how to heal. We kicked him. Took a trip to our base. Stocked up. Came back. Killed the God in 5 minutes. He promised to never farm us ever :)

I have another story that you or may not find funny but it cracked me up for hours when we did it. During the days before bases when PL was really out of hand (logging on to 150 emails asking for farms or offering them for a price) my sg decided to have a 'Kill a newbie day' so what we did was we all did missions in the Shadow Shard up until we got the ambush. Then 20 of us went to the hospital in PI and called in our mission and 20 mobs of Soldiers of Rularuu came...including bosses that replicated/divided themselves. We then pulled Giant Monsters to PI and that killed a lot of newbies. When they went to the hospital they got killed again...and again. lvl 54 mobs btw doing pure psi and special damage...final the farmers decided to go in and help the newbies...the amount of lvl 50 that died when they made it to the top hospital was ASTOUNDING (I stopped counting at 350)....I logged off for the night...and when I logged back on after WORK the next day it was still being talked about and the mods had to log on and displace the mob. :D My sg never got spam mails for PL ever again :)

Up And Coming Freeware Games!

http://battlefield.play4free.com/

Battlefield is the latest game in the long running Battlefield franchise and the second of the series to be free to play. Unlike the previous Battlefield Heroes, the game has realistic graphics similar to those found in Battlefield 2. like previous Battlefield games, players will have the opportunity to play various roles like Medic, Engineer, and so forth. Matches take place on large maps that pit two teams of up to several dozen players against each other. Expect an assortment of vehicles like tanks, jeeps, airplanes, and helicopters to be thrown in. There’s limited information available on the game, it will be published on EA’s new ‘Play4Free’ portal alongside other free to play games like BattleForge, Need for Speed World, Fifa Online, and Tiger Woods Online. - MMOHUT

Mods for retail games, no. I have been officially done with paying anything for games for a long time. My original 'Free And Legal PC Games' thread that I started back in the late 90's on the Doom9 boards was all mods at first until it mutated into what this thread is now.

LOTRO has been already listed. CAG also has LOTRO Kinship and thread devote to that awesome game. Use the front page to check out the rest of the other free and legal PC games on this list. It's organized by genre, 2D or 3D, alphabetical order, single player only, multiplayer only and single player and multiplayer along with denotes for CO-OP games.

Chex Quest 3 is cool but I believe it violates one of my posting rules in which the games must be easy to install and play...unless that has changes...I won't be posting it.

Alien Swarm has already been listed. CAG also has a STEAM group for that.

I apologize. I looked for LOTRO and Alien Swarm in your list first but I must have missed them.

Chex Quest 3 (which includes 1&2) was easy for me. It doesn't even have an installer. It was just an .exe that you run to play the game. The rest of the files it has to access are included in the archived folder that you unzip. Just create a shortcut to the .exe and you're done. You can find it here:

NP. LOTRO was under MMORPG -> Fantasy 3D and Alien Swarm was under Action - Top Down Shooter 3D.

Search sometimes works better when you're new to the way I run this thread. It's an ever evolving mass of awesome that looks like a mutate-o.

Cool. Just ran it real quick and it is much easier to use then it was a long time ago. I will post it up when I finish with my next stack of games to post. 18 games tested and ready to post another 123 on the burner.

Rainblood - Town of Death

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

Pang Town, a small but once popular town on the border of the Central Land, was now blighted by a sudden and strange plague. Most of the people fled, while someone or something unexpectedly came.

A black dressed man entered the town with fatigue and sadness, but at once he felt the never the hounding steps of those sent an unseen foe.

Then from the town came killers wanting him dead for unknown reasons. An old old ally came with a little girl who year ago died in the hands of the black dressed man...Now this little laughs at him laughs at him as the confusion and chaos of all that surrounds the man comes crashing closer...

Megazell's Comment - I only played a few minutes of this game but it seems really well made...the music, the character art and storyline seem top notch. The trailer is in Japanese but the game is in English.

Escape from the Underworld

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Play as a fallen angel in this exploration platformer.

This. Is. AMAZING. Escape from the Underworld is the story of a dark angel's fall from glory, and consequent rise from the underworld. With all your powers taken by heavenly beings, you're left to roam the depths of Hell, building your strength back up so you exact your revenge.

There's a very Metroid-like feel to this game - you begin with all your powers at full strength, before having it all taken away and being left to with nothing. Slowly but surely, powers are discovered through exploration. The level design is really fantastic - it's a little difficult at first, as you only need to be touched once to die, but as your powers build, you can really feel your dark character becoming a force to be reckoned with. - IndieGames.com

Website Spotlight

Armor Games

http://armorgames.com/

Armor Games, formerly Games Of Gondor, is a website based in Irvine, California that hosts free Flash-based browser games. Armor Games was founded by Daniel McNeely. Under its former name, it hosted The Lord of the Rings-themed content, such as the games "Hob the Hobbit", "Battle for Gondor", and "Orc Slayer".

The site has since hosted a variety of games across many genres, such as puzzles, shooters, and strategy games.

In addition to hosting other developers' games, the site's staff creates free Flash games in-house. User John Cooney ("John") is its Head of Game Development.

ConArtists is another popular game designer with games such as Warfare 1917 and The Last Stand. Game developers can create Flash games and get them sponsored by the site.

Megazell's Comment - Below are some gameplay videos of 'The Last Stand' series. Which is a lot of fun.

Up And Coming Freeware Games

APB

http://www.411mania....s-New-Owner.htm

Even though the original life span of APB was short, it's getting a second chance by becoming free-to-play.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, K2 Network just bought the game for $2.4 million. Not only did they buy it, but it could be running by the end of the year.

K2 is known for buying failed MMOs and making them free-to-play. Another example from the company is when they picked up 9Dragons from Acclaim when they closed.

http://www.apbforum....info-today.html

In September 2010, the joint administrators, Ken Pattullo and Paul Dounis, from business and restructuring specialist Begbies Traynor, said efforts to rescue Realtime Worlds had been unsuccessful but renewed efforts were made to conclude a sale of the IPR.

"We are obviously very happy to have concluded the sale but at the same time very much regret the loss of jobs as a result of the closure of Realtime Worlds," said Paul Dounis of Begbies Traynor. "As a consequence of the IPR asset sale all outstanding wages and holiday pay claims will be met in full. GamersFirst is a pioneer in the free-to-play space, thus APB will be re-launched as a free-to-play model game rather than the previous retail model. People who previously bought the game can now look forward to playing it again once it's back online."

"The acquisition of APB is an important complement to our main Free2Play™ third-party publishing business," says Joshua Hong, CEO of GamersFirst. "We believe in putting our gamers first by encouraging the community to tell us what they like or dislike and then incorporate that feedback into our evolutionary development process. The core principle is to completely eliminate all economic barriers for gamers to experience our games."

GamersFirst will publish APB: Reloaded as a AAA Free2Play™ title, developed by US based Reloaded Productions Inc. using Unreal Engine 3.

"APB was a game that had several exceptional features and some brilliant ideas, even though it was plagued by some initial balance and monetization issues," says Bjorn Book-Larsson, CTO and COO of GamersFirst, and responsible for GamersFirst's studio and game development efforts. "We want to take all the unique features of this title, such as its unparalleled character, weapon and car customization systems, and convert the game to a true free-to-play game. We are deep into the planning and early execution stages for this next chapter of APB and we will share more details in the near future. In order to put Gamers First' we will also actively engage the community in many aspects of all the planned changes."

APB: All Points Bulletin is a massively multiplayer online third-person shooter game based in the modern-day fictional city of San Paro featuring two factions, Enforcers and Criminals. Players can join either faction, and then form their own customized team and group to join the constant battle across the urban landscape.

GamersFirst and Reloaded Productions plan to launch the next chapter of APB in the first half of 2011.

Commando Attack Sub

Simulation/Vehicular Combat
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

In Commando Attack Sub, players control a futuristic personal submarine at the bottom of the ocean in 3D.

The game plays in the first person perspective like most shooters with flight-sim style ability for z-axis movement control. Death match multiplayer support available.

Megazell's Comment - Control you sub with W,A,S,D. You have to arm your weapons first by pressing 1 and/or 2 for left and right guns. Pressing 3 arms your missiles. You can charge up energy for a dash forward and use it by pressing right click. The music is OK though not what you would expect from a sub game.

CPU: 1.8 Ghz

Dear Agent

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Espionage

Dear Agent is a fiddly but ultimately rewarding platformer created by Jonatan during the Blekinge Tekniska Högskola Game Jam. Over several levels, your mission is to kill all the terrorists and destroy all their equipment, before escaping through the exit.

Your laser can cut through any block in the level, so you're able to cut your own path. You're never given enough ammo or explosives to win the level, but fortunately there are vats of lava (or at least I assume it's lava) that will ooze about the place if you blow a hole in the side of the container. It's really tricky stuff - the second level took me more than a dozen tries to complete - but once you get past the awkward controls, there is plenty to like here. - IndieGames.com

I didn't have time to fully playtest it, so there might be some bugs in the game. Will fix as soon as possible if I get any reports! - Developer

Megazell's Comment - The game is frustrating fun or as some may say 'Nintendo Hard.' The screen is a rectangle and your character and game world are very small. You can not full screen it. This game won't be for everyone but then again this is Cactus gaming :)

System Requirements

OS: Windows XP or higher
CPU: 833 Mhz
Memory: 32 Mb
Video: 32 Mb
Hard Drive: 2.86 Mb

A House in California

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Drama

‘A House in California’ is a surreal, narrative game about four characters who bring a house to life. These four characters are based on relatives of mine (two grandmothers and two great-grandmothers). The game is inspired aesthetically by Mystery House, developed in 1980 by Roberta & Ken Williams. But whereas Mystery House is a mystery story about greed and murder, A House in California is more like an Imagist poem about family and memory. A House in California is currently being featured in the Learn to Play exhibition at Euphrat Museum of Art, was also exhibited at the Meaningful Play conference at Michigan State University in October 2010 and is an entry in the 2011 IGF.

This game is available for free and was also sold in a limited-edition hardcopy run of 50, which is now sold out. Thank you so much to supporters who bought the game in presale or otherwise supported the project on Kickstarter!

System Requirements

OS: Windows XP or higher, Linux and Mac versions available
CPU: 900 Mhz
Memory: 32 Mb
Video: 32 Mb
Hard Drive: 17.2 Mb

Thread Update.

I've been going through the thread and updating the post that are missing images (tinypic nonsense), gameplay videos and working author links. There a small amount of non-mmorpgs games that I have neglected to add a back up link to so those are being added now.

Currently, I have completed pages 1 to 20.
