Nintendo Gamecube Rarity Guide Published

It's funny how rare PSO became, despite it being easy to find at the time of its release.

Finding the modems back then, though...

how can gun be the most common game? I never even heard of it throughout its release until finally my friend told me about it like a year ago, and usually gc versions of multiplatform games were rarer than their xbox/ps2 counterparts hence if it was so common on the gc it must be all over the place for other platforms. Is this really true?

I can't imagine fire emblem being that rare, as there were tons of copies around here even at the end of the gamecube available for $15 each, and I own one. Pikmin 2 is also a mass produced game as well.

I can see stuff like Pokemon Box (I own it yay for me!) being rare, because that was only mail order and they only made so many of them. That one was definitely not available in retail stores. But games like Pikmin 2 and Fire Emblem were abundant in quantity at least here, and were pretty much available at any retail store. I can't imagine many people wanting PSO unless they just want to look at it on a shelf as a trophy rare game, because I am sure the servers don't work by now.

I've seen lots of copies of GUN too, but oddly enough I don't have one for myself. GUN was especially abundant at the end of the Gamecube era.

The official servers are down, but there are private servers that are in full swing. Same folks behind them are working on getting Episode III up as we speak. It's only Xbox PSO that's pretty much useless at this point.

I don't see how Super Smash Bros. Melee can be rare. I mean... come on, wasn't that the most sold Gamecube game as well?

This isn't so much of a "rarity" guide as a Supply vs. Demand guide. Pikmin 2 was pretty mass produced - but compared to most any other 1st party title, it had a pretty small production run. Considering it's a great game, a Nintendo title and from the long-forgotten GameCube era (pretty late in the GC's main life, too) many people want it and those who have it don't want to give it up (you can't have my copy!). So, the game is in demand without much of a supply. That doesn't make it "rare", per-say...

Meanwhile, a crap game like, say, Gun, could have had a print run similar to Pikmin 2 - but no one cares about it - even more so when they can get the same game on their PS2/XBox.

As for Phantasy Star - I assume the original is so high since it is (at least was) a common and easy way to hack the Game Cube. As for Plus - who knows?

FFFFFFFFUUUUUU-

My little cousins opened my sealed Mario Kart Double Dash! to play while they were visting, not noticing my already opened, found on clearance Player's Choice copy not a foot away

I thought the non-Plus version of PSO would be worth more, as the Plus edition removed that streaming exploit. Maybe seeing "plus" in a title automagically makes it rarer and worth double than a non-plus title!

Plus had a smaller production run compared to the original. There's also the matter that while it doesn't have the option of hacking with the Cube, it does have content in offline mode that's normally available in online mode only.

So is this guide just based upon how scarce a game is? If so, how can something like Animal Crossing get rated with a 70% rarity meter? You'd be hard pressed to not find copies of that game in any used Gamecube section.

I can attest to Fire Embem being rare because I waited about 6 months before a used copy was available at a gamestop in my area. The prices on ebay/half.com were too high for me to get it online.

Also is it just me or do the values on this website seem a little high? They're way more than these games are actually going for online.

It looks to me that it just records whatever the highest prices are that are placed on auction sites, regardless if they sell or not.

The funny thing is that in December 2005, Fire Emblem was selling for $10 new at GameStop the day after Christmas.

I know I got my copy of Fire Emblem for $10 at Game Crazy (along with Battalion Wars and Chibi Robo for the same price...) :D

Now, if only I had bit on Pokémon Box. Still kick myself for not doing that.

I still have a sealed Fire Emblem.

How is Beyond Good and Evil rare?

That reminds me I should have bought RE4. I know I never bought it, bad me, I was waiting for a B2GO, or a 20% off coupon but every time GS had one I wasn't near a good Gamestop. There is a great one in Worster MA on a hill for GC games, love that store. Now the damn game is $15 used, and i don't plan on buying a Wii anytime... ever...

I wish I had kept the 6 sealed ones I bought to resell. I only sold them for $25 each because I was getting worried they wouldn't sell. Luckily I kept one for myself.

I'll give you $25 for it. :)

If you're on goozex, you can get it for 150 points, which is essentially $7.50. I thought I had a copy, but I traded it on goozex last year. I could've traded you some Lego for it

Lol, it's not sealed anymore though unfortunately. Speaking of goozex, I managed to get a game only copy of it for 300 points or something like that. Ended up selling it later for $60 :)

A game's "rarity" is not necessarily tied to its mass production. If that were true, FFVII would not have been fetching $100+ on ebay. Heck, it shouldn't even be fetching the prices it currently is.

A rare game can be the result of many factors. Owners of a great OOP game might simply not want to sell it off, meaning the supply is smaller than the demand (i.e. FFVII). Others might really have been printed in short supply (i.e. Ikaruga).

I'm happy to see that most of my GCN games are on there. I've got 67 (90%+ bought new -- a few still not opened -- Pikmin 2, Sims, and others). I don't plan on ever selling my GCN library though if I ever did, it would be altogether and not separately ;-)

Technically, something isn't "rare" just because it's hard to find - although the two often go hand-in-hand. Now, we're getting into semantics here, but, to use your example, FFVII isn't rare - I could find several physical copies within a day if I put the effort into it. Now, it might be "rare" to find it for sale or on sale at a "reasonable" price, but the game itself isn't rare. Compare that, to, say, Pokémon Box. I'd bet that virtually all members of CAG know at least one person IRL that still owns a copy of FFVII - and several more who have owned a copy at some time in their life. But I bet the number of CAGs who know someone IRL who still owns a copy of Pokémon Box? Probably pretty small.

Pretty darn awesome... I'm about to spend the next couple of hours on this site...hah.

NCAA Basketball 2K3? Really? I actually had that game. Hated it, but I bought it for like $3. I lost the game, I think, but I still have the case and manual laying around somewhere. Wish I had it now. :(
