Metroid Prime review

Metroid Prime is everything you'd expect from a metroid game.

A lot of people expressed concern over a 3D metroid. It just looked like a run of the mill first-person shooter. But let me remind you something; the original metroid looked like a 2D action game, but played like an adventure. This took that same concept, but upgraded it a generation. Now action games are generally first-person shooters, which metroid resembles, but it still playes like metroid. You still explore a planet in a vaguely linear fashion with missile packs, life paks, and other upgrades spread about your adventure. Even the little spiky guys who circle platforms are back. Same with the original metroid music. So rest assured Metroid is still Metroid.

The autotargetting works real well, which is nice because it makes you feel like a badass without having to do as much work. Which is not to say the game is easy. Some of it is, but osme of it is really hard, and I have't even attempted hard mode yet. One thing that people have mixed reactions about is scan mode. I like it as a means of scoping out a room for secrets and what not, but I've heard that scanning superfluous things is taken into account when going for the 100%, which is not cool. I mean if you want to know what every friggin computer screen says be my guest, but I don't think it should be considered for 100%, because it's not really an object or anything to help you on your journey. I didn't mind it too much because I was never one to go for the 100%. I can't fathom doing it without a walkthrough, and doing it with a walkthrough sounds like a chore. so what if you get a better ending? You could use that time to get a job, make money, and fly to europe and meet a beautiful french woman. That's about how much time it'd take you to find the 100% without a walkthrough.

The visuals are real nice. i'm not a techy when it comes to graphics and sound (which is why I rarely mention them in my reviews), but metroid did look nice and ran real smooth. I also liked how the cutscenes were real brief and used the in-game engine. Ridely flying over the ice canvas and casting his shadow was particularly woundrous. And the game's visuals are pretty inventive. Like the sunken ship, and chozo temples. Parts of the game had a Myst-like quality to them, but it is an action game, so not everyhwere can keep up that level of wonder. most of the tunnels and hallways are decent enough, but nothing too spectacular. Still, considering they had to upgrade Metroid to the third dimension is looks very metroid-ish.

I did have one pretty big problem with metroid prime though. And that is the pacing. They show off too much too soon. The first half of metroid prime was quite possibly the greatest video game I'd played (or very close to it), and the reason I got a GC. But after that there's a lot of backtracking and you get to see new stuff less and less. by the time I was about 75% through the game I had seen just about everything save the final 2 bosses, but still had to run all over the planet collecting stuff. And there was one occasion where I missed an object and had to travel clear to the other end of the game to collect it, a task that took 45 min which I recieved little to no joy from. Backtracking is fine if there's a whole new area to open up, but if you have to walk clear to the other end of the game to open a small room and get a new gun or something it just feels like the designer's are trying to drag the game out. And it's not that the game map is too small. It's pretty huge actually, but they coulda paced it a little better.

If you were never one for the older metroid games then metroid prime will not change your mind. One problem I always had with the series is that the "puzzles" aren't really puzzles, but just close observation. that's still true here. It's nothing new, but if you dig metroid then metroid prime more than lives up to what metroid can be. I look forward to metroid prime 2 later this year.

nice job.

This game is the reason I bought my cube.

I really like how they didnt rely on cutscenes to tell the story unlike most current gen games of the like. While im sure some would rather have cutscenes than having to scan everything I really like it as it gave a more interactive, more classic feel.

Simply an amazing game to experience.

denis im suprised. its a topic about MP and you completely fail to mention its complete suckiness? has everyones favorite hater turnd a new leaf? or do Scrubking and along just suck more.

you should turn your sig into a numbered list so we know how much you hate things.

i agree though that prime rule so much. still havent beaten it though.

how about if its too old for you, dont read it?

Thanks for the reviews pierre.

If people are that insistant on shoving their opinions upon us by throwing them on here they should at least talk about something remotely relevant and not try to give us reviews on very old games that already have hundreds of reviews on websites all over.

I could sit here and write reviews of all the atari games, but that would be stupid.

We don't need people giving us their opinion of their games collection everytime they feel nostalgic.

The last thing we need is to have a review board full of useless redundant reviews about old games.

the reference to ancient games is good, I hadnt thought about that.
however these are current gen games that are availible in every retail game store and most if not all can still be considered "system movers". Id think that makes them relevant.

If you dont want someones opinion of a game "shoved" on you dont read the thread.

Well, you read it didn't you? I didn't see any rules about current games only at the top of the forum. I mean, it wasn't deceptively titled, there was no reason to click on it if you didn't want to read a review about Metroid Prime. Not everyone is going to post about what you want to read about, deal with it.

I for one enjoyed the review, and it reminded me that I need to pick up that game again and finally finish it.

It would be amazing if the cube had a good second analog stick...a shame...if you could only aim on your own...auto aim sucks...I like it but I just get pissed off easily with auto aim

Seems like someone's awfully full of themselves...

Great review of a STILL RELEVANT and (relatively) CURRENT game. Just because it didn't hit last week doesn't make it old, nor does arrogance make one intelligent.

[quote name='DenisDFat']because 15 months ago is oh, so ancient.

Wow first time I think I have agreed with DennisDFat.

Not all of us have played Metroid Prime yet. Hell, there are a lot of older games that I haven't played yet, and since I don't have time to play every single game in existance, reviews like this help me.

I'm probably going to buy Metroid Prime this summer. Durand, you said part of the game reminded you of Myst. I'm not good at first-person shooters (it's not that I dislike them, I just have horrible hand-eye coordination) but I love adventure games. How much do you think this game would appeal to someone who is more interested in games that involve exploring and solving puzzles as opposed to games that revolve entirely around shooting stuff? Is MP an action game with just some adventure elements, or is it as much an adventure game as it is action?

It's still much more of an action game. It's like the old metroids in that the "puzzles" are mostly just searching nooks and crannies for missile packs, or searching for cracks in the wall to blow up. It reminded me of myst mostly in terms of visual style. Like a giant tree, or a mechanical bird statue in a cathedral type setting. It's still not as good looking as myst, but it's far more creative than the usual shooter.

And most of the game isn't TOO difficult, but you may have trouble with some of the later bosses.

And I do agree that there aren't enough good oldschool graphic adventures on the market. Especially since Lucasarts cancelled both their Full Throttle and Sam and Max sequals mere months before release. I usually have to stick to the classics for that genre.

Funny thing ... I just started playing MP this weekend. I'm only about 6 hours in, but so far at least, I would say it's more adventure than action. I find myself saying "How do I get there from here?", "Where is this thing I'm looking for?", "How do I activate that platform?", and "hmmm... How do I get up there?" alot more often than I am trying to kill or be killed.

yeah, metroid's got some pretty decent puzzles, but nothing along the lines of the myst variety. But it's still way ahead of any other shooter on the market (to the point where Nintendo doesn't call it a shooter).

A) This is an open review forum, he can review whatever the hell he wants. You didn't have to read it so stop thread crapping.

B) Considering this is cheap ass gamer and that MP is a relitvly cheap game now, wouldn't it make since to review it for those who haven't played it?

Good review Mr Durand Pierre. It's just a shame that some of CAG loser elite had to crap in your thread.
