Just curious what everyone thinks are some must play PS2 games... I'm looking to go back and play any "hits" that I may have missed along the way (as if there arent enough games out for the PS3 and 360 that I havent played yet)... List your favorites.

Here's my backlog of PS2 games. Dunno if any of them are "hits" but we'll see...

Shadow of Colossus
Silent Hill 2, 3, 4
Siren
Clock Tower 3
Project Snowblind
Deus Ex

BVHARRIS makes a good point... I'm not much interested in RPGs , platformers, sports (cause Ive played em all already) or racing games. That being said, I love action, horror... Tomb Raider, Metal Gear, Socom, Silent Hill... love that stuff...

I could list scores of "must-play" PS2 games.. It has a ridiculously deep catalog. Really depends on the genre you're looking for..

good point. i edited my posting.

I really like NINJA games.

With that being said:

:ps2: Shinobi
:ps2: Nightshade aka. Shinobi with boobs
:ps2: Red Ninja: End of Honor

Also try out:

:ps2: God Hand
:ps2: Crimson Tears

Great beat 'em up games.

If you love Deus Ex, you'd flip over :ps2: Darkwatch. I have a copy incoming from Goozex and I'm going to play the shit out of it.

But yeah, like bv said, there are a slew of "must play" PS2 games. The above are games in my PS2 collection that I refused to part with even after purging most of my more valuable/collectible games. Plus, you can get most of the mentioned games for $5-$10 at your local GameStop.

Oh! :ps2: Killer 7 if you like FPS/rail shooters.. it's also kind of a "survival" game.

Edit:
Forgot :ps2: Nightshade.. another NINJA game. Girl ninjas are LE HAWT.

Edit2:
I already mentioned :ps2: Nightshade. I'm just spazzing out. @_@

lol MISO, the only game you mentioned that ive ever heard of is Shinobi, and i dont recall there being a PS2 version. ill definitely take a look. also, what do you mean by "rail shooters"

My favorites:

Baldur's Gate
Champions of Norrath
Silent Hill 2
Resident Evil 4
Final Fantasy X and X-2
Shadow of the Colossus
ICO
Grim Grimoire

Haha. I figured I should offer up some of the more obscure PS2 gems. Any self respecting PS2 owner would have already heard of the more popular games like Killzone, God of War, Grand Theft Auto, etc.

A rail shooter is like a shmup.. except it's usually in the first person point of view. You'll almost always follow a pre-determined path and you just kill the enemies that show up on the screen. You aim, shoot, and dodge like you would in an FPS game, but you're limited to scene you're on. Just think: Time Crisis, House of the Dead, etc. :D

Two things with this list.

Shadow of the Colossus is amazing. I mean, really freakin amazing.

As good as SotC is, Dues Ex is even better. But not on the PS2. Throw that piece of shit away and get the Game of the Year Edition on PC for like 5 bucks. It is worth it, trust me.

I have NO issues with the games you recommended. Some fun action games. However, you cannot honestly compare Dues Ex to Darkwatch. Please, no. Dues Ex is now ten years old and still unmatched by 99.9% of the games out there in terms of scope, originality and gameplay. I am not trying to slam Darkwatch, its another fun game too, but it is no Dues Ex.

Popular ones that are must haves:
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Okami

Personal Faves:
Samurai Western
Onimusha (series)
Katamari (series)
Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter

Persona 3 - A great game that was really addicting for me
SotC - just beautiful and amazing
Katamari Games - oddsome (just made that up)
DQ8 - Very immersing and at times a good level of difficulty
Dark Cloud 2 - An amazing balance of gameplay - Love Level-5's work one this and DQ8
Suikoden 3 & 5 - 4 is udder crap
These are amongst my personal favorite.

All this banter of must play PS2 games and nobody mentions Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2?!?!?

If you like Horror then you must play Fatal Frame 1-3, Rule of Rose, and Kuon.

Good luck finding those last two as they are kind of scarce.

Deus Ex and Darkwatch are in two complete different categories. Deus Ex is a game of the millenium contender, Darkwatch is up for FPS of the month August 2005.

Don't get me wrong, Darkwatch is fun, but I agree with YanksFan - they shouldn't ever be mentioned in the same paragraph.

Awesome list all, I'll be adding to my PS2 library thanks to all of you. Now just need a mega ultra Gamestop super 90% off sale so I can get some of those PS2 games for cheap or hound around Amazon/Ebay.

Ico used is $34.99!!

A collectors gem though.

Silent Hill 2 was the best of the series, and one of my favorite games of all time. You can skip Silent Hill 4, as its one of the worst of the series.
Final Fantasy X was awesome. X-2 had great combat, and XII was pretty good.
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are amazing games, but if you have a PS3 and haven't played them yet, wait a few months for more news on the HD collection. SotC had some pretty bad framerate issues, and the HD collection could fix all of that.
Beyond Good and Evil is awesome if you like the zelda formula.
The Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance series, and Champions of Norrath were awesome Diablo style games.
Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games of all time, however, I preferred the controls on the Wii, but is still great on the PS2.
Gran Turismo 4 is my favorite racing game of all time. If you have a PS3, you might want to wait until November for GT5, though.

I know I'm forgetting a bunch. The PS2 has the greatest catalog of any console ever. You can't really go wrong with any of the games mentioned in this thread.

Action and horror, huh? Here are a few that should be on your playlist:

Chaos Legion [A poor man's DMC but still a solid game]
Crimson Sea 2 [1 is only on Xbox, go figure]
Def Jam Vendetta [Personally, I think this game was the best fighter on the PS2]
Devil May Cry 1 and 3 SE (2 is okay, not great)
Extermination [a little known gem from Sony's first party]
Fatal Frame 3 [IMHO, the best of the three, a rare title though]
Gauntlet Seven Sorrows [Classic Gauntlet with next-gen makeover -- fun w/ friends]
Genji - Dawn of Samurai [a solid game, though the Onimusha series is better]
Ghosthunter [Don't confuse it with Ghostbusters -- but a great homage to it]
Haunting Ground [This one takes some getting used to, much much better than Rule of Rose]
Hitman Blood Money [Best Hitman game]
Indiana Jones & Staff of Kings [People universally dissed this game; it's not that bad -- and if you're an Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider fan, it's hard not to like it]
Onimusha 1, 2, 3 and Dawn of Dreams [The 3rd and DoD are amazing games]
Primal [You hate platformers but this one mixes horror and action so might be worth a look]
Psychonauts [Yeah, another platformer but so underrated and yet so good]
Resident Evil 4 [As if this one could be left off the list :p]
Shadow of Rome [Relentless action marred by some stealth -- Capcom's most overlooked gem]
Snoopy vs. Red Baron [Don't let the license fool you -- this is a solid shooter]
Spiderman: Friend or Foe [This and MK: Shaolin Monks are two great "Double Dragon" like games]
Transformers [Atari release; don't confuse this one with the movie one; this one was a great action game!]
Trapt [Surprised no one mentioned this one -- definitely worth a look if you're into horror]
Twisted Metal Black [Still one of the best games around -- still one of the most disturbing, too]
Vampire Night [I know you hate rail shooters, but this one is probably the best of the bunch, and it's a campy mix of House of the Dead and Time Crisis made by the best in the business - Sega and Namco]
We Love Katamari [I like this one over the original Katamari Damacy -- sure, it's not action or horror but you'll hopefully agree that the screams you hear when you roll people up almost gets close to horror]
Zone of the Enders 2 [1st one is bad; this one is excellent]

I always loved Stella Deus for some reason. I don't think anyone ever mentions it and it probably wasn't that great of a strategy game, but it got me through a tough time in my life.

I 100% agree with Final Fantasy x and RE4...those are two of the few PS2 games I've kept.

You should also check out Disgaea and Phantom Brave if you're into Strategies.
