NHL 11 - Out now!

So with E3 going on this week I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of news on NHL 11. There was actually an accidental reveal tonight in regards to the cover athlete too.
No surprise about Toews, except for the fact that it's a guy from the same team for 2 years in a row.
Yeah I wanted to see Toews get it, but I figured he wouldn't for the reason you said.

As long as it's not Hossa, I'm cool with a Blackhawk being on the cover. If it's not a King, at least my home state is represented. And it's not a Red Wing, Duck, Shark, or Canadien, so that's a plus as well.

Well, Ovechkin or Crosby should be up there, too, not that I'm a fan of either.

I just noticed that NHL 08, 09, and 10 feature guys in red jerseys on the cover. Toews needs to be wearing his normal home uni to keep the streak alive!

I think bettman doesn't realize that he has numerous other young stars to market the game besides #8 and #87. Hopefully this will stop the constant pain of having those two shoved down every hockey fans throat.

I'm an Avs fan. Matty D for cover of NHL 12!

Ewww, I really thought it was gonna be Richards, especially with how he played in the latter part of the Habs series. :( Though I dunno how it works, they probably have the cover athlete picked a few months in advance for all I know.

Same team in a row two years? Pshh.

Well, as a Pens fan I am shocked that Crosby (or Malkin for that matter) hasn't been on the cover yet. I know the league has nothing to do with it (Kesler on 2K11 for the Wii? Really?) which may explain Crosby's absence ;)

But Ovechkin was on NHL 07 and 2K10, so he obviously doesn't say no very often.
Wow... never heard about this before:

http://www.easports.com/blogs/inthe...-look-at-the-ea-sports-ultimate-hockey-league
Wow, that's pretty freaking awesome. As I've mentioned, with the ridiculous problems that my other favorite sports games have had with even functioning online this year (MLB 10, UFC 2010), it's actually made me start to miss the simplicity of jumping online and playing NHL. Even with people abusing glitches, at least the matchmaking system worked and the game wasn't riddled with lag.

I really was planning on waiting for reviews for NHL 11 before I even thought about buying it, but with this new mode and a couple personal situations (I'm moving in December, and could be without internet for a few months...so, it really feels like the decision is to either get NHL 11 at launch or not at all), this could be the one game I have time/money for this fall. If Amazon would just do a freaking promotion like they've been doing with almost every EA game lately (NCAA 11 had $10 back, and Madden had $20 back), that would probably be enough to push me over the edge.

Yeah, it's like Madden Ultimate Team kicked up 10 notches with organized playoffs and all that. I had no idea about the move, though. I hope you aren't internet-less for long.

Pre-order Bonus
Pre-order NHL 11 and receive three free digital issues of The Hockey News. Access code will be e-mailed within five business days after your order ships. Offer valid when shipped and sold by Amazon.com, while supplies last. Limit one per customer. Amazon reserves the right to change or terminate this promotion at any time.

Uh... hmm. That's... well, that's something. A $10 credit, at least, would be nice, but I am getting the $20 credit from Madden. I'm getting another $20 credit from Halo: Reach, but that doesn't come out till a week after NHL.

Yeah, if that's the only "bonus" for NHL 11, I'll be disappointed. I don't know if that means NHL 11 is not popular enough to give credit back or TOO popular to give credit back. But with the thought of saving money for the move and other life changing things (all good though), I decided to pass on football entirely this year. I've got so many games in my backlog as it is, I just didn't see myself really needing to play NCAA or Madden. At most, I'll get three games at launch this fall: Rock Band 3, NHL 11, and EA MMA...with only RB3 really being an absolute.

I understand. I have an enormous backlog, as in pushing 100 games (unfinished; not all unplayed), that I don't need more, but I love the CAG leagues and am signed up for the Madden one. There are probably 30 games I want that come out between now and the end of the year for the 360, PS3, and Wii, but I won't be able to even get half of them.

God I fucking hate Toews...Last time a player from Philly made the cover had to have been Roenick back when ESPN made games. I think

NHL 2K11 releases on August 24th for the Wii, followed by NHL Slapshot with the stick peripheral on September 7th. I might end up with multiple hockey games this season.

I like your GT :)

Join the team this year!

Well they took the link to all the cheats you could purchase down, but you know they will be back before too long. I posted about that stuff in the NHL 10 thread when I saw it. They release that crap for a lot of the other EA Sports games as well. Usually all of it can be unlocked in game, so I'm not sure why anyone would spend money on it.

Interesting to see Ultimate team making it into this years game. They released it as an add on for FIFA 09 & 10 and Madden 10. It is on the Madden 11 disc this year, but not sure if it will be free in FIFA 11. I am glad to hear that it will be included with NHL 11, but not sure how much I will play it. I'm sure there will be some achievements tied to it so that will probably a reason for me to spend some time with it. This Ultimate Team mode actually first appeared in the UEFA Champions League game from a few years ago. Funny how they take something that was free in an old game, make a few tweaks and try to charge 400-800 points for it in FIFA 09&10, but then again this is EA and they are selling 156 boosts for NHL 11 again this year so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at all.

Well, honestly, since this is the second year they're doing it, I think it will be easier to assess which boosts are actually "worth it". Last year, I made the mistake of purchasing the "playmaker pack" thinking it would be something that would work on top of the regular boosts I earned in the game. Once I learned that it was just a package of low level upgrades, it became worthless pretty quick. On the flipside, the Kane 88 pack that I got for pre-ordering from Gamestop (which included a 3 slot stick, skates, gloves, etc.) was useful until the final day I played the game.

Those are the only types of things I could maybe see being "worth" spending the points on. 3 slot equipment or the +5 boosts for things that are somewhat difficult to unlock (ie. "Win 3 Stanley Cups in Be A Pro playing at least 40 games each season"). Though not exactly a hassle, they are things that would take a significant amount of time, and most likely wouldn't be unlocked until late in the game's lifespan (unless you set out just trying to unlock all boosts). I'm not saying I'd buy any of those boosts, but knowing what I know now, if I did, I'd do it differently than last year.

Well personally, I'm not buying any of it. I guess I can see it making sense to some people if they plan on investing a lot of time into OTP or BAP, but for me I lost interest when I found out that OTP in 10 had the same problems as 09. I like the BAP mode, but don't really need to buy any of these boosts for that especially since I'll probably only play that mode enough to get the relevant achievements in it. In the end I'm an old school NHL guy who played 1v1 on the Genesis back in the day and that is still how I prefer to play. Now that my brother picked up a 360 and Live it will be pretty easy to find a game for me most of the time. ;)

But like I said, some of these might be worth a purchase in the right situation, although none of them could impact the game as much as the Tiger Woods DLC that lets you max out your stats for 240 msp. Although I think you make the right point about the Bauer pack from last year which was free with a GS pre order. The pre order bonus appears to be the same this year (it just says bauer boost pack, but is probably the same 3 slot items sans Kane). I'll probably go that route since that is really the only promotion I have seen so far for NHL 11. Even Amazon hasn't offered a $10 credit for NHL like they do for most of the other big releases. I guess in the grand scheme of thing as much as hockey fans like the series, it just doesn't sell enough copies to warrant big promos from Amazon/WM/BB. It will sell well in the hockey markets and that is about it.

Whoa...how has nobody noticed this yet?

(from Gamestop's product description)
All-New EASHL Dynasties—The EA SPORTS Hockey League takes online play to the next level as championship seasons are awarded with banner-raising ceremonies and new user celebrations that allow you to rub it in the faces of your biggest rivals. Prep your team for their playoff run with an all-new Practice mode.
That might be enough to push me over the edge. Being able to have CAG team practices to hone our skills could be tremendously useful. I mean, I guess we could sort of do this with private matches last year, but maybe this will let us practice against AI opponents? That would be pretty great to make sure everybody is playing their position correctly.

It is surprising that there aren't any deals for this game though. I guess you can say this isn't a "huge game", but games like Clash of the Titans, LA Noire, and Mafia II have $10 credits. Surely, NHL 11 can compete with them. Maybe it's EA's fault?

At Amazon, it's $56.99 + no tax + free release date delivery + 3 digital issues of Hockey Magazine or whatever the hell it is. At Gamestop, it's $59.99 + tax + free whoops, not free (hopefully this changes) release date delivery + the Bauer boost pack (which is a stick, glove, and skate boost...most likely 3 slots like Glock said). I've still got a few of those $10 coupons from Gamestop, so that might make it worth paying the tax just to get the boost pack.

Yea, I'm really surprised it hasn't shown up on the Amazon $10 credit list especially now that you mentioned those other games that have $10 credits tied to them. What makes it more weird is that NHL actually sells a decent amount of copies, not Madden-type numbers but overall NHL 10 sold around a million across 360 & PS3.

I'll probably just get it at GS since I have credit there and might have a $10 coupon left. Usually a week or two before a game releases they have some type of free shipping code that comes out in their weekly emails. It is usually free ground shipping from what I remember.

Oh yea, the achievement list is out:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/nhl-11/achievements/

Play 250 ranked matches with your BAP character. That one should be fun...
As in OTP? I had over 500 by the time I was done last year, haha. Magicking is still playing NHL 10. He's gotta be close to 1000 now.
Yea, I'm guessing it is OTP. Guess I better start enjoying OTP if I want to 1000 NHL 11...

The practice pushed me over the top as well nate, I would've got it eventually but now I guess Amazon is getting more of my cash. I've been wanting that for a LONG time, it will really help IMO.

custom jerseys? what what what?

also, what the hell are these "Ultimate teams" I read about with this game and Madden... what is it?

Just saw that myself. This must mean it's that time of year when I get all excited hoping my dream of putting the Sex Panther or Crotch Shark logo on our jerseys will finally be a reality. But unless they go "team builder" style, it probably at most means choosing your colors and logo from a pre-set group. This will definitely be a welcomed improvement though.

As for Ultimate Team, here's the link Matt posted on it earlier.

http://www.easports.com/blogs/inthe...-look-at-the-ea-sports-ultimate-hockey-league

Basically, it seems like online dynasty fantasy hockey, with a team that you put together by earning points and purchasing card packs with various things in them (players, trainers, contracts, etc.) It seems pretty cool, and will most likely hold my interest more than offline franchise or online leagues did.

Tough to really warrant buying this one. Still playing NHL 10, and the big sell point that I want on these is upgrade ice physics. I want degrading ice conditions, and more lifelike reactions to the ice from the players. Catching edges and falling, tripping over teammates/opposition, more scrums that allow players to fight for the puck from their knees. So far, I haven't seen much of it in a hockey game. :(

Watched the trailer for it today at EB Games. I'm really tempted, but that's only if the Gang gets back together. But of course we all know that there will glitch shots, the thing is will we be dealing with them as a team this year?
I'm sure most people could have guessed, but the demo comes out this Tuesday (8/17), and I guess it will give us a taste of the new EAUHL feature.

http://boards.ign.com/nhl_ea_sports/b6062/194820510/p1/?6
i must just be getting old... what does HUT mean in that post?

edit: ok, again it's hockey ultimate team. I don't know if a fantasy type thing will even be something I want to do. I just love playing with the team on the OTP, and to a leser extent, the BAP. The online leagues are also great, but my success ratio of being in ones that are completed is around 35%.

Happy the demo is out early and looking forward to the game.

Well, like I told Matt, I'm definitely going to just take the plunge and pre-order it because I'm moving in December and might not have a good internet connection after that for 4 months or so. So, it felt like a decision of getting it right away or not getting it at all. But I'll be playing at least until December.

And with the ability to do team practices, I'd kinda like to have maybe 2 scheduled "hockey nights" each week. Maybe one to practice and one to play games. Or mix it up half and half each night. Couple hours of practice, couple hours of playing. Just some ideas.

Is NHL 11 getting the "EA online pass" treatment where you have to buy the game new in order to play online? All the EA Sports games this year have had it (except FIFA World Cup) so I'm assuming NHL will as well. I think most of the die hards will be buying it new anyways, but something to keep in mind if you are going to pick up a used copy. Just FYI you can purchase the online pass if you buy it used for 800msp ($10) so if you get the game used on the cheap and get your msp points cheap you might be ok waiting and buying used, especially if there continue to be no deals on the game at release. I'll still be picking it up at release either way.
As in OTP? I had over 500 by the time I was done last year, haha. Magicking is still playing NHL 10. He's gotta be close to 1000 now.
No, I stopped around 750. I don't really play it anymore, but I think I'm going to be playing it (as well as the demo) a bit just before release just to get used to the game again. Honestly looks like a lot of improvements, but I can see where people are going to exploit things already. Broken sticks, all it's going to take is a slash, and I've also heard people saying that there's going to be line changes/injuries in OTP this year. If the injuries do happen, I's sure every team is going to have a bunch of people with 99 checking doing nothing but trying to kill you. Still, can't wait for the release, although I might be picking it up a week or so later.

EDIT: Wow, does anyone think they're overdoing it a bit with the HUT achievements?

I was not playing attention to this game very much since the team stopped playing, but I must admit that it does sound pretty good. I may go ahead and pick this up if the demo is solid. I hope they fix the glitches in OTP, but even if they don't I think I would get enough out of it with the new EAUHL.

I really think the team practice mode will help too. In the two games I played earlier tonight since reacquiring NHL 10 (thanks to BBV's new online game rental and a free 30 day trial), it was remarkable how poorly people play their positions and/or work the puck around. I guess club play is different than just playing with randoms in OTP...but some people are just puck hogs, while others just don't know what the hell they're doing to begin with, lol.

Even after being away from the game for roughly 3 months, I can say without feeling like an arrogant prick that I was head and shoulders above most of the people I played with, haha. Mostly because I played my position well and looked to get my teammates involved on plays. I know that's something the CAG team improved on tremendously the last few months we played, and with a full on team practice mode, there's no reason we can't take that even further.

Noticed that too.

Will pass this year around.
