I went to the pet store and saw this wolf like looking dog called a Shiba Inu. Played with him for like 30 minutes in the play pen with my wife. Too damn cute..

I personally prefer the black and tan ones like the one I saw at the store but the cream ones are nice, too.

My main concern with this was how much hair do they shed? I had a small dog with long hairs (some kind of pekingnese mix) years ago and it was terrible. Friggin hair everywhere. Wifey wanted it so bad I had to stop her from doing an impulse buy. The price was just really absurd at 1899! She has been nagging me almost daily about this dog so eventually I probably cave in. I researched and there are places with much better prices.

DO NOT pay that much for any dog. I am in veterinary school and the only reason to pay more than a 500 for a dog is if it has an AKC champion bloodline and you plan on showing or breeding. As with all purebreds, there are higher risks of genetic defects like allergies, eye problems, and orthopedic problems like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. The breed overall is very beautiful and much less prone to these defects compared to most other breeds, but they are risks. The more people you know with a certain breed, the more problems it probably has. (Thank you uninformed breeders)

Look around shelters, or for people who just had puppies in the area. $1899 a total ripoff and I mean a total ripoff.

My wife and I helped my Father-in-law find and buy a female (Kitsune) that's the "red" coat (rust & cream).

They have great cat-like personality (preferring to be clean and cuddle) but are still very much a playful dog breed. If you want a small frisky dog that doesn't smell and avoids filth- good choice.

While it's true they don't "bark" per se they are far from silent dogs. They have a screeching howl, somewhere between an owl and a little girl who's seen a rat. The noise they make is both exceptionally unnerving and unbelievably annoying.

It is also the "cat chasing-est" dog breed I've ever seen.

The breeder we got her from said demand for Shiba's has exploded and price has gone through the roof prompting many CKC "puppy mills" (continental not Canadian) to pop-up up to cash in.

I've never seen a black and white one only the red and cream, and this post makes me think of the Hachi: A Dog Story movie (the american one)

My mini-schnauzer is where its at. He's my little buddy and is attached to the hip to me. Likes to snuggle up by me as I play games or watch TV. I come home at Midnight and he comes running out of the bed room and hugs my leg lol.

I have a black & tan Shiba Inu that I got here from a fellow CAG. She is a sweet, loving, and protective dog, but she can be a bitch (no pun) to other animals.

Just wait until you leave it alone and it starts the Inu's signature um...howl. You and your neighbors will love it. Get a dog from a shelter. Seeing as I work in one I can tell you we get expensive dogs in all the time and they aren't any better than the dogs we get off the streets. Pure bred dogs always have issues because they are inbred. Designer breeds aren't natural. Get yourself a nice generic pup and you'll be much happier

Sure its alot to pay for a dog. But alot of times if you want a pure breed you have to shell out. The likely hood of finding a pure shiba inu at a rescue has to be amazingly low. As with most things, if you want something specific and now then you have to pay up.

Pet stores charge a premium and its hard to be sure where its from. Look up Shiba breeders, some might be in your area. They most likely will be alot less and you can see the adult dogs they are breeding.

I was in your EXACT shoes a year ago. Went into a pet store, Frenchbull dog... Debated over it for hours... decided not to. She kept bringing it up, found a breeder, showed me a picture of the little guy. Done. Love him to death. Worth every cent.

My shiba will be 4 this year and I love her to death. But If your going to get a Shiba research research the breed. They are not like other dogs. Here has been my experience

-Very rough. When we play she'll hurt me before I could hurt her
-Antisocial.. Besides family members she doesn't like strangers and other dogs.
-Shedding. Twice a year she sheds crazily (got the furminator and that helps)
-independent. When we need to take her out she'll quickly notice and run under the bed. She'll get to the exact point where we cant reach her, so we have to get cookies and create a bread crumb trail to get her out. Or she'll do this

If you do get a Shiba be prepared to be constantly stopped and told what a beautiful dog and asked what breed it is.. Or hear people say as you pass what a beautiful <insert wrong breed type>puppy.

My g/f is looking to get a Shiba Inu puppy in a few months, and I will be getting a German Shepherd puppy around the same time. Any Shiba or GSD owners think the breeds will get along?

Hey hotshot, mind if I ask how much shibas are around your way? Researching in NJ, there are breeders and are charging round a grand.

My Shiba Inu can't stand my parents' German Shepherd. My little Shiba tries to bully the GS, and the GS puts her in her place.

Don't buy a petstore puppy. Not only do they jack up the prices, but you don't get to meet the parents and assess their temperament.

Generally speaking, two dogs that grow up together from puppyhood will learn to get along and develop their own pecking order. Many people advise against getting two puppies at the same time due to the amount of attention they need and the chance that they might bond more together than with you, the owner. I've raised two GSDs from 6 and 8 weeks old to adulthood (at separate times) and they were both handfuls in their own way. They're incredibly smart and they'll test you in subtle ways.
