You won't ever get to play any of the unique and awesome games that Japanese (and apparently European) gamers get to.. But why would you want Xenoblade, The Last Story, etc when you can have Battlefield 6: The Call of Halo? You're welcome, America! :D

Looks like I need to start learning japanese . Thinking about starting Dungeon Siege III tonight. I hear the game has mixed opinions, but as long as it's mostly a loot crawler, I can live with it.

Yet strangely, we have no problem getting Atelier Neptunia Qoga: Record of Loli Wars localized.

It seems counter-intuitive that smaller companies are often more willing to risk bringing their niche properties over than the big boys (specifically Nintendo), who you figure could more easily absorb a poor showing. But that's the state of things these days.

Probably gonna get this to play with my wife soon (we played through both BG:DA and Champions of Norrath games and enjoyed those). Can anyone here compare it to Dunger Hunter Alliance (which I also haven't played)?

Haha! I agree about the thread title. I almost thought this was quoted from me, since I've been ranting about that for years now on CAG. There are actually games, like Quantum Theory, that use the same engine and mechanics as Gears of War, but niche RPG titles are out of the question.

Oh well, I finally found FFTA2 during a B2G1 at my local gaming shop. Let's hope it's halfway as good as the first ones.

You know, I actually think they received a fanbase for doing this, and that allows them to do it. I mean whenever Atlus puts out a game nowadays I at least give it a look, because Atlus hasn't really let me down with good quality titles.

What I don't get is that the big companies often cite the cost of localization not being worth it. Granted, even the smaller game publishers have had some JRPGs that sold less than expected, but they're still around and apparently doing well enough that they'd be willing to take risks (and still do great localizations). The difference, I think, is that the small publishers know what's niche and what isn't, and take that into account.

Loving it (and the thread title, of course!). I'm over 80 hours and 220 quests in now. My biggest complaint about it is that it's tough to keep up with the main story what with all the tiny little sidestories of the optional quests going on as well. That, and there's too many damned jobs, as I mentioned before.

Otherwise, I'm finding this to be a better game than FFTA. The main characters are decent, the menus/interfaces have improved, the Judge system is much better, and so on. It's simply a fun and very well made game.

:applause: @ thread title :D

Tried the demo for Dungeon Siege 3 and hated it. Soooooo freaking slow. Maybe it's just cuz I played as the chick (who could turn into some sort of flame elemental) but it was just aweful. Sad, as I was looking forward to a good dungeon crawler/loot fest.

I'm about 40 hours in, and I still don't like it. This is after playing FFTA 2.5 times.

My biggest gripes (there are lots):
-Enemies still don't follow laws. In the previous game, they at least got yellow and red cards, even though it did nothing.
-Can't sort items in most screens. I always have to exit the store, go to my roster, sort, then go back in the store.i
-Some of my jobs still don't have more than a couple of skills. I have almost every fighter skill, but I have unlocked weapons for like 3 paladin skills, and 3 alchemist skills, etc.
-Beast masters cannot move the beast they control any more! Makes getting blue magic that much more of a pain, and makes them pretty much worthless otherwise.
-Weird hit rates. Standing behind someone now might not change the hit rate compared to standing in front of them, but instead the damage goes up. Then you get 90% hit rate and miss three times on a row =P
-MP damage sucks now.
-Air ship travel. Let me use the map to travel instead of having to walk to the city, go through the prompt, ses the animation, have them welcome you for the umteenth time. Sucks even more of you accidentally say no to flying, then you have to go back into the city...
-Most of the jobs suck. I find myself using mostly Fighters (and equivalent), and turning away moogles (have 2, and any more than that is pointless cause their jobs suck).
-No steal equipment? (not sure about this one, but I have steal lv1, 2, and 4, and somehow not 3).
-They should have increased clan size, so you don't have to save space for the special characters like the bard.
-The worst law I've ever seen. Cannot be buffed or debuffed. Then their sniper debuffs you first turn. What do you expect me to do, use my single ribbon?

The bigger problem is death of PSP so we are missing out Valkyria Chronicles III, Tales of the Last Promise, and Criminal Girl, 7th Dragon, Little Battler, and probably every PSP game coming out rest of the year.
-Some of my jobs still don't have more than a couple of skills. I have almost every fighter skill, but I have unlocked weapons for like 3 paladin skills, and 3 alchemist skills, etc.
This is one reason why I think there's too many jobs. In FFT, it was easy to have a character on one or two jobs and just stick with them. FFTA was bad with the specialization, but FFTA2 is worse.
-Beast masters cannot move the beast they control any more! Makes getting blue magic that much more of a pain, and makes them pretty much worthless otherwise.
Forgot that Beastmasters could do that in FFTA. In FFTA2, I use them for PITA enemies that cast annoying status effects. Pretty much ignoring Blue Mages, myself.
-MP damage sucks now.
The ability to use HP in place of MP is really handy in such situations, and also great for MP hogs like Summoners.
-Most of the jobs suck. I find myself using mostly Fighters (and equivalent), and turning away moogles (have 2, and any more than that is pointless cause their jobs suck).
I didn't like the moogle jobs in FFTA much, so the ones in FFTA2 were to be expected (Nu Mou FTW). Chocobo Knights are pretty sweet, though it can take awhile to find their mounts. That and the Ranger are the best new jobs to come out of this installment.
-No steal equipment? (not sure about this one, but I have steal lv1, 2, and 4, and somehow not 3).
I have at least one mastered Thief now. There is "Steal Accessory" (and "Steal Loot Lv. 3" does exist), but that's pretty much it. As an aside, "Steal Limelight" doesn't come in handy until you're as far into the game as I am.
-The worst law I've ever seen. Cannot be buffed or debuffed. Then their sniper debuffs you first turn. What do you expect me to do, use my single ribbon?
I'm guessing you haven't yet run into the law where you can't be stolen from. Now that sucked. I relied heavily on Illusionists for that battle :p

I like the law where you can't heal, but they'll still allow you to use the Regenera privilege! There's privileges to prevent debuffs, but I've only ever gotten the first one.

Anyway, not trying to make excuses for FFTA2; this has just been my experience with it. I can understand why someone who played the hell out of FFTA would be disappointed with the finer details of FFTA2.

ETA: Rune Factory 4 announced. Well, looks like I'll be getting a 3DS sometime in the future!

Big kudos to Rodimus who was generous enough to give me his Square Enix members code. Got 50 points for Nier.

Does anybody belong to the Square Enix member program? There's still some stuff I have to register. One of those is my own copy of Nier.

If it won't let me register 2 copies, I will be giving the code away as I don't believe in selling information. All information should be free. Physical goods, not so much.

So watch the free forum for a code if it doesn't work (my code is at home). I might be putting it up tonight if possible. If I get busy tonight it will be put up this week definitely. Is there a forum for free Square Enix member codes?

Website is: http://member.square-enix.com/na/

I don't have a problem specializing characters with certain jobs. The problem is that I still only have only a couple weapons for some jobs, like Red Mages and Templars. I couldn't let them learn skills if I wanted to.

Still doesn't change the fact that they can't hit other monsters if they only have short range attacks, because they rarely stand next to each other.

FFTA had Moogle Knights too. They were like the worst fighters. Doubt they changed much. However, I always had a Juggler in the battle, for Ring and Smile. Their hit rates aren't as good, and when skills like Molatov Cocktail hits, it usually won't cause berserk. Gunners were also great. They had ok damage, but super long range and good status shots. Like jugglers, the status effects rarely trigger in FFTA2.

Good to know Steal Accessory is at least in the game, even if Steal Weapon etc. aren't.

I have, but Safeguard (Maintainence) is easy to get. So I had maybe 4 people with it, and I used long range for the other two.

I've healed a handful of times so far, half of them on a guest character. I don't bother, since even Curaga does so little healing, I just opt to full offense.

I forgot two things.

You start with 0 MP now, instead of full. Makes your casters a little worthless. It's also broken if you use Matra Magic...

And Bad Breath only causes silence/poison/blind. Yay. It used to cause slow/confuse/poison/blind/silence/frog/sleep. Ok, frog was broken, but they could have left the others in.

I do like Rangers though, I'll admit. I can still frog things with Mirror Item =P

Moogle Knights and Chocobo Knights are two totally different jobs. And no, Fencers are the worst fighters :p

Ah, I forgot about Safeguard. AFAIK, that doesn't help with Steal Gil, though.

I found it odd at first, but it's an interesting/challenging problem to have (even with Absorb MP and whatnot). I kind of like that.

I didn't know moogles had two knight jobs...thought it was just the crappy mog knight from FFTA.

And Safeguard does prevent gil theft. It'll show up as 0%.

Also, Fencers are nowhere near the worst fighters. They're just very tactical versus hard hitting.

Edit: My phone's doing that crap again, doubling my post.

Hey. The latest Atelier game was the best seller last week in Japan.

NOA basically said screw you to everyone. The good news is people still aren't letting up. Everything Nintendo has put up on Facebook is being bombarded with people complaining about the 3 games.

I have faith yet that NOA will do something with this.

I don't, though I am absolutely floored they would troll their fans that blatantly. They took 4 days to craft a PR response, and that was it? Astonishingly tone deaf, though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised anymore coming from Nintendo.

I'm officially never buying a 3DS or Wii U. Or Skyward Swords for that matter.

Maybe I should order a third Vita, as an extra fuck you.

Persona 5!!!

^ Just want to see how many people I piss off by writing that. I would be in this thread more if I actually had new RPGs to play. I'm in here talking about DW Gundam and Nier. That's how sad this genre is. Maybe we'll get some kind of JRPG rejuvenation like fighters have gotten, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I hear ya man.. salvation is coming in the form of:

38649_shin_megami_tensei_persona_2.jpg

When does it come out again? Sept.??

It's another summer drought. Although Persona 3 came out in the summer of '07, right?
Take that as you will.
I take it as "we'll wait and see how Innocent Sin sells." Which is entirely reasonable. If it sells well, I fully expect we'll see Eternal Punishment on PSP.

Wow, $80 and shipping to import Xenoblade.

I am tempted to do it, I am not buying any new games until Deus Ex unless a killer deal comes up, but jesus this is fucking insane. My Wii is already modded so I just have to confirm I can play imports and I will be good.

I loved Persona 2 EP back on the Ps1. Per-sona! Bust it!
I don't have a psp, so unless I suddenly win the lottery I'm not spending $150+ just to play this one game that I really really want.

I really wish persona 5 would go back to a more mature setting and skip the high school stuff. The on-rails, forced choices of some of the high school social link stuff so soured me on Persona 3.
Hmm?

The only weapons requiring drops were the "side" weapons. All the basic weapons with more damage and accuracy were just money upgrades. If you wanted something that did poison or had weird properties then yeah, you could grind out those maps. Not to mention that those weapons were entirely unnecessary anyway.

Also VC1 has insane anime tropes in it... it's one of the reasons why it left a bad taste in my mouth. I actually liked VC2.

VC3 so far seems more grungy. I don't know about the mission structure so far, there are side missions and story missions but I'm unsure if all the story missions are all story. I think (but I'm not sure) that advanced class changes are linked to potential activations, potentials are linked to classes, and you're free to switch classes as you wish. Training is actually pretty cool, you do training courses to upgrade your team's stats instead of upgrading a class. Maybe this'll add more utility to the classes with low AP since you can just train AP specifically and they won't be so gimped.
I haven't play the game for long time(got it at release date) so I'm going take your word on the "side weapons" having elemental properties or status effects. All I remember was playing one of the character side quest 8 times just to upgrade several technology tree branches for either armor, weapon or tank. I also remember that the final side quest was so annoying since you need a lot of gold to unlock it. I think it was around 8 or 25 million gold.

Well.. the tropes in VC2 bother me more.

As long as they fix the learn potentials I'm pleased. I can't stand tripping on mine trap over and over again to activate some character hidden potential. I hope they rebalanced the light tank. A one turn cp light is extreme broken.

Square Enix Members Code Drop thread here.

I want to extend another thanks to Rodimus for kickstarting the Square Enix Members code drop they by sharing his Nier 50 point code with me.

Tried Dungeon Siege III last night for about 15-20 minutes.

It's ok. Classes are very generic in nature, but I will assume it gets more fun as the game goes on. I will have to play more of it to really get an impression.

Nice. Sands of Destruction has been in my Gold Box at least 3 or 4 times a week since its release, Amazon really wants me to buy this game, though thus far I have resisted.
