Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Note: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.

This information is taken from the CAG Steam discussion thread. Please visit it to talk about Steam in general and Steam games!

Steam features

  • Play from anywhere: Games you buy on Steam are permanently tied to your account. Download them again on other computers! *See DRM bullet point for exceptions
  • DRM: Most Steam games only use Steam's DRM. If a game uses another form (such as Batman: Arkham Asylum), the store page will say 3rd-Party DRM.
  • Play offline: Most Steam games can be played offline. When an internet connection isn't available, choose to start Steam in Offline Mode.
  • Steam Achievements! Many games have exclusive Achievements that you and your friends can keep track of. Get a Steam card graphic for forum signatures here.
  • Steam Cloud! Many games like Torchlight offer Cloud support. Your save file is hosted online and accessible from wherever you play the game, so no need to manually transfer it to other computers. Look for the Steam Cloud
    ico_cloud.gif
image on a game's store page.
  • Automatic patching: Steam automatically downloads updates for your games whenever they are released. If you'd rather patch manually, click on that game's Properties/Update from the Library menu.
  • Friends list: The Steam friends list is also an instant messenger. Text message friends, voice chat, and easily invite friends to most games. You can also see which friends own the same games as you and compare Achievements from the Library menu.
  • Gifting games! You can buy games and then gift them to other people. Wishlists make this easy; maintain your own and view your friends' lists, too.
  • Incredible sales! There is a sale virtually every weekend, Black Friday, during the holidays, and more.
  • Steam Play: Purchase a game once and play it from both Windows and Mac! Look for the Steamplay icon
    platform_steamplay.png
    on games' store pages.

FAQ

I bought a retail copy of a game.
OR
I bought a game from another downloadable games provider besides Steam.

Can I download it from Steam without rebuying it?

You can do this for some games (especially those whose retail versions automatically use Steam). Most games don't support the feature though. See the full list here.

How do I add non-Steam games to my Steam library? Why would someone want to do that?

From the Library menu, choose Add a Game and then Add a Non-Steam Game. Select the game's executable file and you'll now be able to launch it directly from Steam. This is a good idea for two reasons. One, launching all of your games from the same place is convenient. Two, when you launch a Non-Steam Game from your Steam library, people on your friends list will be able to see what you're playing.

Why is X game more expensive on Steam than other retailers? Is buying from Steam not a good deal?

Steam generally offers games at their current MSRP. That means if Capcom wants to charge $30 for Street Fighter IV, that will be the regular Steam price. Yes, you might find the retail version on clearance at Target for less. But that's clearance, which you can't expect every other retailer to match. However, Steam has tons of sales which usually beat everyone else's prices.

When are the big Steam sales?

During the big Steam sales, Steam sells multiple games (sometimes hundreds) at large discounts. There is always a sale on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) and an extended holiday sale (starting December 24 and lasting until the beginning of January). In 2010 and 2011 there have been extended summer sales too. If you're not in a hurry to play a game and want the best possible price, it's a good idea to wait for these large sales.

Do all Steam games work with controllers?

Just about all PC games can be controlled with mouse and keyboard. But some people are more comfortable with controllers, AKA gamepads, and some games just play better that way. The Xbox 360 controller is the default gamepad for modern PC games. Many games support it, but not all. Most games with controller support have a Controller Enabled graphic
ico_controller.gif
on their store pages. If a game doesn't have that graphic and doesn't mention controller support in its text description, assume it doesn't work with controllers. There is a partial list here. If you'd like to use a controller with a game that doesn't natively support it, the XPadder app works very well.
It depends on the game. For example, VtMB only requires you to download and run an .exe file, telling it your game directory. On the other hand, something like Oblivion, even with the mod managers available, is a pain in the ass because of things like loading order and compatibility between mods if you use more than one (and you'll want to use more than one).

On the plus side, every game I've seen with a large mod community also has great support to help you get them up and running, and mods really can make a game leaps and bounds better than it was.
I appreciate the response. Nice to know that I can find help if I'm having trouble or general questions about mods. I've been putting off playing VtMB because I've read that it requires mods to run properly.

Haha, nice thread topic there eastX. But it does give CAGers and/or spouses heart attacks when they see the bank account. :D
I'm surprised the old thread didn't break CAG.
It kind of broke the Steam thread itself. There was incredible lag when posting.

It's amazing what a difference a fresh thread makes. It was at the point where it would take 20 seconds to load a page telling me that I had to wait 45 because it was trying to double post.

Nice a new thread. Although it was kind of awesome of many posts and especially how many views the old thread had. That thread was on pace to break CAG haha!
I'm surprised the old thread didn't break CAG.
It was starting to get to that point.
It kind of broke the Steam thread itself. There was incredible lag when posting.
That would be why we needed a new thread, and we'll make sure this one doesn't get so big.
It's amazing what a difference a fresh thread makes. It was at the point where it would take 20 seconds to load a page telling me that I had to wait 45 because it was trying to double post.
Yet more reason to start with a fresh thread.
It kind of broke the Steam thread itself. There was incredible lag when posting.
Aaaah, yeah. I noticed that too when I posted recently...! =0

not sure why it isn't but should probably add the group buy and gift request thread http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=279563 to the first page not sure where though, under everything else in group buy section maybe?
Found it annoyingly hard to find for some reason during the last sale, search thingy not always too helpful for trying to find threads it seems.

Always been sort of interested in Jericho so will try the demo and might pick it up.
And oh my a new thread again last one lasted a lot longer than the previous one I think.
So, why is the dlc for civ never on sale? I need me some Mesopotamia action
It was on sale during the summer sale, but I wouldn't expect to see it marked down again til the winter sale.
So, why is the dlc for civ never on sale? I need me some Mesopotamia action
It has been. Once. In April there was a 40% across-the-board sale for Civ 5; the game and the DLC.

I am watching the other sites that sell Civ 5 for DLC sales, too: Amazon, Gamersgate, D2D. If I see something, I'll mention it here.

For those waiting, I think a "complete" pack is a long way away - Civ has always had expansions at the 1-year and 2-year mark, and the "complete" edition ("GOTY" in today's parlance) comes after 3-year mark, and it remains at a very high price ($40 or $50) until the 4-year mark.

Maybe that will be different because of the DLC model, but I'm not holding my breath. I think, if you're hot to play the game, that buying the game today for $17, and then waiting for a 75% off sale on the DLC sometime this fall (the 1-year mark) is a viable strategy. But if you have a big backlog, or aren't too hot to play, then yeah, wait, and some day you'll get it ALL for $10! :D

Rather regret getting ARES:Extinction Agenda and Dungeons of Dredmor. ARES is just dull and watery. DoD I might just not like because I haven't been big on roguelikes as of late, but I did beat 100 Rogues...

Still, I WILL say that DoD's humor isn't anything special AND there's no reason on earth to buy it instead of just getting Nethack or Stone Soup.

Again, don't let me stop you, just throwing the complaints out there.

^ I passed on ARES for $5 this past summer sale... I figured it would most likely pop up in an indie pack this winter.

Hard Corps: Uprising is currently giving me my Contra fix ;)

It's weird that I am reminded by Steam I have certain games when they update...like for example, when I was wondering what Steam was updating last night, I had apparently bought Railworks 2 at one point.

Anyways, Altitude is a fun time waster, give it a try for the free weekend people!

ARES just sucks. Don't even hunt for it in a pack.

Hard Corps Uprising IS so much better than ARES, it isn't even funny. I always joke (While still more or less meaning it) that the worst Metal Slug beats the best Contra, but ARES just makes me feel like this is the sort of game that Metal Slug 3D beats. It's just dull as heck.

I've found Dungeons of Dredmor to have a great sense of humor and charm plus a solid GUI and fun skills to experiment with and a nice progression of difficulty levels/permadeath option. Well worth the $5 they're asking for it.

I was considering Jericho until i noticed the 60 range metacritic score. Have far too many games in the backlog to bother with a game like that.
