Twilight Princess help

I am at the part where he transforms for the first time and am in the forest. I have looked at the FAQs and can't find this. I defeated those pink bug looking things at the same place where the kid got captured with the monkey earlier in the game. I need to collect 2 blue balls of light that the bugs turned in to. I can't pick them up. What the heck am I doing wrong?

You need to go water fall/river thing in forest.There the god will give you something to collect the blue balls.

the gate is closed to faron woods. i backtracked through the pink swamp looking stuff and through the initial cave tunnel. outside of the tunnel the gate is locked so i can't get back. am i screwed and have to start over?
