Important Info if You Sell on Ebay or Amazon

CAGiversary!
Do you sell your unwanted video games and dvds on Ebay or Amazon? Well looks like those days are rapidly coming to an end for small time sellers.

Ebay and Amazon are now forcing sellers to give them their tax identification information or SSN. IF you refuse, Ebay will bann you, and your paypal money is frozen! Amazon suspends your account if you do not comply by the end of Dec.

This is severely going to influence my buying habits since it looks like I'm stuck with whatever I buy for life. I refuse to trade in my games to Gamestop and Amazon for less than 10% of what I originally paid. On Ebay, I could get at least 50% or more. I don't want to do Craigslist because I live in a high crime area and afraid of getting robbed, and of course, paypal is out of the question.

So what are you guys using to get sell your unwanted games and movies?

so give them your SSN? They are not going to do anything unless you go over their limit.

You could just sell them here on CAG and accept money order.

Really, you feel comfortable giving all your private info online especially after something like the PSN hack this year?

If your information is lost, they'll get sued, especially since they're online retailers and already have millions of credit card numbers, bank accounts, etc. Sony was just fucking stupid.

I honestly don't care.

They're only asking for this information if you cross the 200 sales/$20,000 in payments per year threshold; as everyone should know by now, eBay has to report earnings above $20k to the IRS starting this year. I sell small amounts on eBay and haven't been asked for a tax ID or SSN, nor has anyone else I know who sells on eBay.

No quite true. Amazon is forcing you at 50 transactions or you will be banned.

Most people still only take paypal so that doesnt solve his problem

As it stands Amazon has locked out the toy/games portion of my selling account unless I switch those items to fulfilled by Amazon. It's funny though, since it only locked out a single deck of Harry Potter Deathly Hallows playing cards I had bought from a local grocery store as a test flip on there. My video game listings are still showing active as are my other listings I have up.

I can't sell any of the items that're locked out on there until frickin' December 30th now because I didn't do enough volume. So Amazon can (insert colorful euphemism here) as far as I'm concerned, since my small time selling account was gonna help me fund some other Black Friday and Christmas purchases w/o having to dip into my reserves.

I guess they don't want small sellers like me undercutting everybody else and causing them to drop their prices and lessening Amazon's fees they take from sales on their marketplace.

Ah, I didn't know that - I only sell on eBay. That sounds like another reason to avaoid selling on Amazon.

Keep in mind that it's 50 per year. Not 50 in total. I don't sell that much at all, so I don't have an issue with this.

I wonder if this effect my tax returns.

I don't even bother reporting video game related sales. Last thing I sold was my new Vegas CE for $50 bucks on eBay.

That is what the 50 transactions is for. They force you to report your info. It is basically Amazon being Amazon. They are not forced o do this at 50 transactions. The actual limit is 200 transactions AND $20,000 worth of sales.

You also paid something for that Vegas CE so it wasn't exactly $50 in profit.

I have always paid taxes on my sales since there are quite a bit of them, but I am not providing Amazon with any info. They can just ban my account on December 26th. I will still pay the taxes but then be done with them.

Paypal is also forcing sellers well below the thresholds to provide their tax info. They won't say what the criteria is. It's based on their prediction that you "may" cross the thresholds in the future, but I've heard of very small sellers getting flagged. Even worse, they will freeze your money and you can't get it until you pony up the info.

I have no problem paying taxes if I make a legitimate profit. Selling used games never results in profit for me. If you don't have original receipts, then IRS expects you to pay tax on the gross amount
