Hello everybody! Welcome to the official home of the CheapAssGamer Fighting Championship! Brought to you by n8rockerasu! With the release of UFC Undisputed 3, CAGFC is back for its 3rd year of competition! For all intents and purposes, this will be similar to any other online sports league you've been a part of. The difference is, this is man against man. No seasons. No schedules. No AI teammates. No one to blame but yourself.

I just really hope the online for this is worth playing. 2010 was so disappointing in that regard. Looking back, I'm impressed with what we were able to do even though CAGFC wasn't quite as good as the year before.

Also looking back, the submission system was terrible. I don't know how it could possibly be too hard to submit people and too easy to submit people at the same time, but it was. It was damn near impossible to submit the CPU, but playing against human opponents (ahem...mrmeaty...ahem), it was ridiculous that you could drag a 250 lb man from side control to rubber guard to triangle choke, in one swift, neat, little motion.

Ultimately, if the online play or submission system is anything like 2010, it probably won't be worth doing CAGFC. I'm not going to have the time or energy to police people this year to not spam exploits. I'm hopeful that they've improved it, but I'm also fairly skeptical.

THQ's tech support was also horrid for 2010. I don't know how many people were still around to figure it out, but most of the online problems (save a crappy submission system) were fixed about 6 months after the game came out. I haven't touched the game since probably April, but back then, the servers were smooth, matchmaking worked flawlessly, and they somehow managed to put back the "view opponent's stats" screen that they "mistakenly" had removed and told everyone it was "not possible" to add to the game when it first launched.

In short, it's actually a pretty decent game now, lol. I just can't believe it took them 6 months to figure out how to make their game work properly. With this year's game trying to be so huge (over 150 fighters, Pride mode, etc.), it will be embarrassing if online play is broken again.

I would love to jump all over this one but those pre-order deals so far don't look great. On a sidenote, the submission system still looks like garbage to me. It may not be popular opinion but I liked the shining system of 2010 (even with controllers being damaged) and think the similarity to EA MMA's submission system will not be good for UFC 3 at all.

IMO THQ is trying to get people to brawl more, since there were A LOT of cry babies who didn't understand/master the grappling system.

You must have only played against the CPU. Against human opponents, the grappling/submission system was completely broken. 2009's grappling system was actually better. Takedowns were way too easy in 2010...which led to most people approaching their opponents with their hands down, tapping back on the right stick every few seconds because it was the only way to stuff a takedown.

Transition reversals were also too easy. I'll admit, many people didn't take the time to learn that you needed to vary your timing when trying to transition, but the window to reverse it was still HUGE...which led to people just camping out and only advancing position through reversals.

Finally, the shining submission system was a joke. To be fair, it probably had less to do with the act of shining, and more to do with the simplicity of "click the right stick and get a submission attempt any time you want one". People would just slap on submission attempt after submission attempt, just draining your stamina (while having no affect on their own stamina). When it's routine for someone to have five submission attempts each round, something is wrong with the game.

It has nothing to do with "not understanding the grappling system". It's recognizing that by becoming a top player, you've learned to abuse exploits. I can say that because that's what I had to do to be at all competitive online. The more THQ changes that, the better.

Nope, I played pretty much exclusively online and was ranked in the top 10 for a little while as well. Had a stellar record and recorded most wins by submission. I truly UNDERSTOOD the grappling/submission system of UFC 2010, and that is what propelled me to the top. Some things were kinda stupid (like the amount of time it took to pass guard on higher level players due to flicking the stick to reverse), but people ran out their stamina and got subbed or didn't transition stall and got reversed very often.

I was, at one period of time, beating top 5 guys (usually by decision) and plenty of top 50 guys all the time, mostly with grappling. I sucked on the feet.

I don't know, I am having trouble seeing this new submission system being any good. I expect the grappling to be great, and the striking to be improved, but without submissions I am worried guys who like to sink in subs will be neglected or need to exploit that foolish Octagon submission ring somehow just to get taps.

So, you were part of the problem, lol. Figures. Did you not notice at all that EVERY fight online was nothing more than a wrestling match? No one ever had any reason to engage in stand up because they could get takedowns so easily. For that matter, anybody who played with CAFs just juiced their fighters to be ground wizards so their stand up skills were non-existent.

It became a formula that you had to follow if you wanted any chance of winning. It's easy to drain your stamina when a guy is attempting submission after submission with no affect on himself. How can you call that an MMA game? You liked it because you got good at it. It doesn't mean it wasn't broken. I'm not saying the new system will be better. But to say they didn't need to change anything is ridiculous. The entire purpose is to make submissions more fair/realistic. If that translates to "not as easy to spam", then too bad.

I'm not saying the original system was perfect, it was far from, but takedowns weren't easy to get if you had skill and timing. I outstruck pure wrestlers/grapplers and outgrappled strikers, its not like I was "part of the problem" and was just grappling/submitting.

I agree about CAFs, and sub spamming was somewhat stupid (although easily defeated), but the grappling system was the best that any game has ever had. I expect UFC 3 to be BETTER, but I have reservations about the submission system, which is a huge part of the game/sport like it or not.

Really loving the demo so far. It just feels really good to be playing a UFC game again. Kinda makes me wish most sports games were on an every other year cycle. A few things of note:

What I Liked:

* THQ said they wanted this game to be taken seriously in the tournament fighting game scene, and accordingly, they've added different "rulesets" you can play under. In addition to the default playstyle, they've added "Competition", which removes flash KO's, doctor stoppages, and adverse effects from cuts. Another option is "Equalized Stats" which does the same as "Competition", but also normalizes all stats and attributes to a rating of 90, putting all fighters on an even playing field. If we're assuming that these options work properly, those are HUGE positives for trying to do CAGFC again.

* Taking it one step further, they also have two different options for stamina. There is the default option and then also "Simulation" which increases the energy cost and damage of all strikes and transitions. Again, something that could prove very useful to CAGFC.

* I like the new submission system. It may be a bit overblown, and does take away from the action happening in the background, but it gives you a real sense of what locking in a submission means. "Oh, he's trying to force me to go to the left. I need to shift the other way." It is almost literally a cat and mouse game, but it makes more sense than "I can spin my stick faster than you".

I haven't played enough to see the effect it has on stamina though (and the demo only gives you 1 round anyway), so time will tell if "submission on-submission off" still works because you still just have to click the right stick and your guy will just launch into a sub attempt. I'm hoping the "Simulation" stamina will aid with that though.

* Pride mode is awesome! Depending on how extensive the roster is (I could have sworn I saw Don Frye and Dan Severn in the intro video), I have a strong suspicion this is going to be the more popular mode. It seriously feels like its own game. It has its own intro, its own music, its own announcers, its own graphics, and just an overall different feel from the rest of the game. It feels like a true sequel to the Pride FC PS2 game.

* Fighter intros are great! (especially the Pride ones, haha) I really hope we can add custom music for our created fighters. I know it wouldn't play on the other person's 360 in online matches, but it would be pretty awesome just to hear for myself. I can only imagine the music that Gail Pennyfeather would come out to. Something by Boy George or Ricky Martin, I'm sure.

What I Didn't Like:

* Refs still don't always step in to pull you off your opponent. Yes, it's an aesthetic thing, but it can't be that hard to program, and it just feels lazy 3 games into the series. IF the gameplay is strong though, I'll get over it.

* Fights take a bit of time to load. That concerns me that we're in for more of the same with loading screens. This is especially worrisome considering the demo is pulling from the hard drive. If loading from the disc takes longer, be ready to install the game to your hard drive or get really bored.

Overall, the gameplay feels good though. I might even say that the Sim stamina is TOO harsh (when I rocked a guy and tried to finish, I was in a gassed state after maybe 4-5 punches). But I'd rather have that as an option as opposed to just being able to wail away with no consequences. At least there's an option for different game styles now, and they can fine tune them with patches/updates/etc. I'd love to hear your guys' impressions too. I want to see people get amped for this game! I can't wait! :bouncy:

Wow, not sure how I missed this. Apparently, the Pride roster has been out since November. And yes, Freddie Mercury (Severn) and Tom Selleck (Frye) are both in the game! I can only hope this means that we'll be able to put incredible 'staches like theirs on our CAFs. Those moustaches are so spectacular the porn industry is jealous.

Two more awesome things I noticed playing tonight.

1. The AI still comes out and wants to touch gloves at the beginning of the fight. And you can still just ignore them and throw a cheap shot while their hand is extended. However, if you do this, the crowd will boo you and the commentators will make note of it.

2. When you knock a guy out from standing, you can still jump on him and throw more punches (even though he's clearly out). When you do this, eventually the ref WILL step in to pull you off. The best part is the first time I did this (in Pride mode), Wanderlai fell flat on his face, so when Rampage jumped on him, it looked like he was just mounting him for fun. I had no idea what was going on, so he just sat there, riding his ass in victory, lol.

Love the demo. Im digging most of the changes/tweaks that they've made. Not sure how to feel about the submission system yet as I haven't tried to many subs but its kind of weird...probably take some getting used to. I like how jabs and straights actually serve a purpose this year in interrupting the strong strikes. Also, everything is more fluid and faster and not as stiff as the last two games. Overall, im very happy with it.

Not a bad DLC pack, and I very much hope that THQ is a little more active in updating stats, etc. this time around. I don't like Pascal Kraus being in there though, how did THQ even think of that guy?

Fight of the Night Pack

Featuring UFC fighters renowned for having the most exciting fights of the night – Joe Lauzon, Rory MacDonald, Charles Oliveira and Sam Stout, along with former UFC fighter Anthony Johnson – the Fight of the Night Pack will be available for a suggested purchase cost of 400 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360 or $4.99 USD via PlayStation Network in March 2012.

International Pack

Featuring UFC fighters “The Korean Zombie” Jung Chan-Sung, England’s John Hathaway, Germany’s Pascal Kraus, Australia’s Kyle Noke and Italian Alessio Sakara, the International Pack will be available for a suggested purchase cost of 400 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360 or $4.99 USD via PlayStation Network in April 2012.
