the problem I have with games like this (ie. that go on sale all the time for the same price) is that I never get around to actually picking it up. I get into the "well why bother, it will be on sale again" mentality and before I know it I'm stuck in an endless loop. Not sure what this has to do with anything, I guess I just want a better sale to give me an excuse to buy it

New Vegas is worth buying right now and playing right now. Arguably the best sandbox+story game I've ever played, ever. And you will never, ever, ever run out of content. Those mods...

The DLC is also supremely worth it. $5 is robbery.

Well they don't call me a Ninja for nothing ;)

Well now I'm supremely tempted. One thing I'm worried about though is how it will work on Windows 8. I know 3 has some weird compatibility issues with win7 (which would only be worse in 8), so I don't suppose anyone here has actually ran it on 8 and can confirm it works right have they? Id rather not have to bother with downloading .dll files and messing with a bunch of settings to play it (source: steam guide) :oldman:
Let me tell you two useful pieces of information...

I seem to recall it working fine on Windows 8 but just to be sure give me a couple of hours and I will run it again when I get home. *Edit: if nobody else jumps in first.

It's the same engine as most of those Bethesda games though, with maybe some minor differences here and there. At most it should take a little hoop jumping like running in compatibility mode or admin or whatever but it should work.

Really if it wasn't working for Win 8 at all you'd see tons of threads bitching about it on the Steam community forums. Actually that's a good place to go look.

Yeah I usually do check there, but there were a lot of people going both ways so I figured I'd ask in case anyone knew. Thanks for checking for me :)

Okay just loaded up New Vegas (had to reinstall) started a new game and ran around a bit. I had no issues at all in Windows 8. I didn't even do anything to it at all, just downloaded and installed and ran the game (there are some good mods out there for it but I didn't load any just for testing purposes).

If people are having issues with this game and claiming it's due to Windows 8, well it's not. I can only assume it's user error and/or some other issue particular to their specific configuration. It's definitely not the OS itself.

ok thanks alot for that. I've found MOST stuff works fine in Windows 8, but every once in awhile there are games/programs that are completely borked for whatever reason and nothing I do will fix it, so I've been trying to find out beforehand if others are having trouble. A lot of people on the steam forums are rather uh, "technically challenged", so I don't like to take only their advice.

Now to decide: do I want to play NV now, or can I wait till the next steam sale and use my funbux to buy it :-k I have Fallout 3 still to play, but it's on 360 and after experiencing the load times in Skyrm, I'm not sure I can put myself through that again. Is there any reason I should play 3 before NV, or are they similar enough that going backwards I won't be missing whatever NV added to the series?

Doesn't matter which one you play first. One isn't going to feel "newer" than the other if you use mods, also. You can mod FO3 later on to feel just as updated as NV. The stories don't really connect anyways.

We don't play games on CAG; we backlog 'em. ;)

No wonder we have no time to play games!

All we do is keep buying games; run games idly for cards; keep backlogging games; & talk about games on CAG Forums + gaming forums like it.

With the two pack and the Oops Discount it comes down to $6 which is probably as low as it's going to get for a $30 game, at least until the retail drops.

I'm kind of tempted at $6 but then I'd still be on the hook for the DLC. :-P

Omerta is fun and charming if you enjoy the era, just don't expect Tropico level of city management depth. Both the management and combat are simple. Management is dumbed down Tropico, and combat is dumbed down XCOM: EU. The simplicity doesn't kill the game, though.
