Anything special to know before buying an unlocked phone? and using it?

Make sure it uses the same frequency/bands as your provider or you may not be getting 3g/4g whatever the case may be.
 
If you don't currently have a data plan with AT&T and you start using your SIM in a smartphone, AT&T will start charging you for a data plan even if you only plan to use WiFi for data.
 
I am covered in that department also I have a grandfathered in unlimited data plan

(thats why i dont want to switch providers)
