Thank you for taking the time to share this deal, but just so you know, there's an official Steam deal thread where all the daily deals get posted. Pretty much everybody who uses steam on this board uses that thread. So we don't usually create separate threads for individual deals.

Speak for yourself, pal. For those of us in the apparently small demographic of owning a computer yet not being obsessive over steam, this deal is very much worthy of its own thread.

I swear, it seems like people want CAG to turn into a series of retailer-specific threads that users have to check individually every day. What's wrong with the old format of simply posting good deals? If I wanted to monitor a separate thread for every retailer that might potentially have a deal, I would bookmark their websites and skip CAG altogether.

I agree, let's get rid of the iOS thread and just post about twenty iOS deals every day! That won't be annoying!

I think both of you are swinging towards two extremes when there can be a nice middle line here. The generalized threads help keep things orderly and are a necessity for some of these deals but I also think sometimes there are deals that are so good that they deserve their own post. I know this creates its own problem since there's all sorts of subjective opinions as to what constitutes a "good deal".... I dunno, I guess it's like porn, you can't describe it but you know it when you see it.

I think this should have its own thread also. I constantly check steam for deals and periodically check the steam deal thread for deals, as well, but Portal 2 is such a great game and this is such a great price, it definitely deserves some recognition.

Portal 2 is the best coop experience I have had in recent memory. My friend and I bought day one and played through the coop and had the best time. I sold it shortly after because I had beaten it and needed some cash. However, I saw this deal and had to buy it again, especially with the Steam Workshop support. Some of those fan-created puzzles are excellent. Also, my friend and I are currently replaying it (approximately a year later) and we are having, dare I say, even more fun. My second GOTY for last year, right after Arkham City and tied with Dark Souls. :p

Honestly, I don't really have a problem with creating the odd thread to point out especially good deals. When I saw this thread this morning though, I thought to myself, "man some douchbag is gonna come in here and rip this guy to shreds for posting this outside the steam thread". So I thought I'd better point out the steam thread in a polite manner before somebody came here and was a jerk about it.

I was just trying to save the OP a little grief. I don't know, maybe I shouldn't have done that.

As already pointed out by iamsmart though. The notion of creating threads for every game on sale on steam is insanity. The Steam thread does serve useful purpose.

Agreed. The Steam thread is very well maintained and people need only check the first post or the last page to get the most recent news. People can subscribe to the thread under the "Thread Tools" to make sure they keep up to date on the latest sales.

Even though you made that suggestion in a very polite manner and did so with good intentions, clearly it still managed to irritate some people. I've found it best to just best to just leave the moderating to the moderators to avoid initiating any arguments.

Yeah, let's just have a new thread every day for the daily deal, then another for every midweek madness and another for every weekend madness. Let's just not aggregate similar deals from one company and not be appreciative of those who do.

Seriously, you "against the grain" nonconformist douches who like to act apprehensively towards someone merely pointing out there's a topic for all Steam deals should just leave CAG altogether. Isn't that what CAG is, an aggregate of video game deals? Why do you even bother coming here? Just check the individual websites every day, since it's obviously the best choice.

When the Steam thread was A New Thing, I was in the camp that preferred individual threads for each new deal. But Steam is now is a deal-making factory. There are presently 38 games in Steam with a discount on them, 17 of them are a very newsworthy 50% off or more.

There is no way that it's better for the CAG deals forum to have 20+ threads advertising good sales on Steam. Not to mention, the lesser games just flop off the bottom, and when they're 3 pages deep, some good samaritan who can't find the game's thread just reposts, making even more clutter.

That thread is beastly, and it requires about 20-30 minutes/day to really participate, or at least follow. It's truly a forum of its own. But it does serve a great purpose for the small PC gaming community here.

I agree that worthy Steam sales deserve their own threads, too. Heck I've even created one or two. But I'm surprised by the hate for the Steam thread. It's really a great catch-all for PC game discussion.

Great point. I disagree a little on the ios point since ios is a specific platform. Getting an ios game for free instead of $0.99 or $3 instead of $5 isn't really comparable to a core game with a significant mark-off.

Yeah, let's just have a new thread every day for the daily deal, then another for every midweek madness and another for every weekend madness. Let's just not aggregate similar deals from one company and not be appreciative of those who do.

A lot of people interested in a deal like this isn't interested in windows games, which is why i don't read windows-specific threads like that. The source engine and steam has been ported to mac and linux (forthcoming) and valve games are actively being ported to those platforms. I don't see anything wrong with a "heads up" post like this one.

I wish the wiki feature would allow the thread creators to promote a handful of people to a higher level so that they could edit the title as well as the first post. A few users and myself are the ones who usually end up posting the daily deal in the thread when it goes live and I know that I would update the thread title with games of note, like Portal 2 and Skyrim, when they went on sale. There wouldn't be any need for this discussion if that feature existed.

Some people don't seem to like store specific threads, but with so many Steam deals every Tuesday and Thursday you run the risk of pushing a bunch of other threads off the first page. That niche Japanese game you wanted? It's gone, 3 pages back before you noticed the thread because Steam is having an awesome weekend.

Maybe you're lazy for not doing that, but others may see that only 1 out 10 times, there's a deal that appeals to them. So, they don't bother checking again.

Is this REALLY how this crap in this thread started? It doesn't sound like he was irritated at ALL just educating the op on this, and "The End" was being very courteous. I fail to see how this is frustration.

You know, I expect this mentality in the retailer-specific threads where there's a physical product that ends up getting hoarded. "No deals if you're not a regular in the thread" is a pretty common mentality and I've noticed over the years that deals in those get harder and harder to find, with nobody updating the main post, or intentionally waiting, because "if you follow the thread regularly you'll know anyway." For those who have obligations outside of CAG where they cannot follow a thread, parsing each individual thread for deals is a time-consuming task, time which can be better spent doing something productive or actually playing the games we've accumulated due to the amazing backlog-expanding nature of CAG. :)

However, for a situation like this, where the item in question is digital and unlimited, there is no reason for the cliquish, "be in our thread or don't get deals" behavior. No one's running out and hording Steam gifts of Portal 2 and depriving any thread regulars of getting a copy. The community, as a whole, is being helped. To cite the example above, where a niche game may be bumped off the front page by "too many X deal threads," let me emphasize the fact that this is a community and the basic essence of that - the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. If a thread is for something that many CAGs are interested in, it will be bumped, and more CAGs will see it. The community is being helped moreso than one Japanese game being bought by a dozen of us with several dozen CAGs miss out on a deal that's buried in a retailer-specific thread...and to play Devil's advocate, why wasn't that Japanese niche game deal posted in its specific thread where those interested in it would be able to find it?

And, really, as far as a new thread for every daily deal, who checks the Steam thread every day that isn't checking the team store for its deal? Steam is its own little niche culture in the gaming world with its own dedicated fanbase. Other people use it, but aren't die-hards - and posting individual threads for awesome deals is a great way for news of those deals to reach them. It is good for the CAG community, and, as it gets more people playing Steam games, good for the Steam community. Everybody wins.

Yes, those stating that this deal should have been in the Steam thread may have been polite, but it was an act that does not foster goodwill and results in a CAG that is fragmented and prevents the best deals from reaching the most users.

What I would love to see would be an improved tagging system, letting each OP simply check off common deal aspects as they begin threads, and adding a feature where one could create custom aggregate pages. Into Steam games? Add a box that lists all Steam-tagged topics as a pseudo-subforum on your UserCP. Got GameStop credit to burn? Add a GS-filtered feed to your page. Filter deals down to the consoles you own. The tagging system on CAG can use some improvement -- as evidenced by this thread for a Steam game with no tags.

Thanks OP.

Already had the game, so I wasn't seeking it out really. But at this price, I couldn't pass picking up one for a buddy that has a birthday on the horizon.

And people need to relax, any which way you look at it. I would have never made a purchase if it weren't for this thread. Perhaps if the steam thread's title was updated regularly (or used it's allotted character limit to list multiple hot deals instead of be "funny") I would have noticed it there. But I didn't, I just stopped in for a quick scan of front page deals and don't care about Midnight Club for free.
