The good people of Insomniac Games are preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ratchet & Clank, which is coming up later this year. An HD remaster of our classic PS2 Ratchet & Clank games is something our fans have requested for a long time, and we’re looking forward to granting their wishes this summer with the Ratchet & Clank Collection.

But we’ve also heard a lot of community requests to develop a new Ratchet & Clank game, one that returns to the classic third-person Ratchet & Clank camera. We listened to your requests, and this holiday season Insomniac will release our new Ratchet & Clank game as part of our 10th Anniversary Celebration.

I’d like to officially announce that Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault will be coming soon to a PS3 near you.

Posted Image

Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault is a fun-sized Ratchet adventure which will be available for download exclusively on the PlayStation Store. We’ve returned to the series’ classic feel, camera, controls and weapons, while innovating and giving you a whole new way to play. Even better, the addition of online features means you can experience Full Frontal Assault with your friends, so stay tuned! We’re really excited about this game, and we hope even these small tidbits about it get you excited too.

We’ve been hard at work on Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault and now we’re giving you a sneak peek at this first piece of art to give you a taste of what we have in store for you when the game launches later this year. In the meantime, we hope you pick up the Ratchet & Clank Collection when it comes out this summer. We’ll have some more news on the Collection’s release date and a special surprise for North American fans coming in the next couple of weeks.

Can you give us any ideas on Length compared to Quest for Booty?

Hard to say at this point, but it’ll be around the same or maybe longer. Will depend on player. That said, it will be far more replayable than Q4B though!

The fun-sized bars still taste as good as the regular one!

And while this may not have the gigantic campaign, it will probably be the most replayable PS3 Ratchet & Clank game!

BTW will it have platinium trophy?

Sweet! I have all of em on PS2 but was planning on getting the collection anyway. Bonus game just makes it better.

I own all the Ratchets, but for some reason only played 1, Going Commando, 1/2 of Up Your Arsenal, and Future. I think I'll just do a series playthrough once the collection gets released :D

Also have to wonder if they'll eventually release the PSP games (like they did with GoW PSP games) as an HD collection, though I heard Secret Agent Clank sucked.

Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault is a fun-sized Ratchet adventure

This phrase is highly suspect. I can't help but think of the tiny candy bars that are "fun size" but only mean less content.

Still looking forward to the collection however.

Where does it say that the game will be included with the HD collection?

From the article: "Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault is a fun-sized Ratchet adventure which will be available for download exclusively on the PlayStation Store."

I think this will be a separate downloadable game ala quest for booty, don't think it's going to also be included with the collection if it is a PSN exclusive (unless the collection includes a code for the game).

Hopefully the collection will include the code the same way the copy of A4O I bought at Target included a code for Quest for Booty.

Quest for Booty was fun, but was all of an hour long to finish.

Where did you read this? Only word I saw on that (assuming you mean Deadlocked) was that in Japan it was launching as an HD PSN title.

http://blog.us.plays...-defense-twist/

Hey everyone, James from Insomniac Games here. Our team of veteran Insomniacs in North Carolina has been hard at work developing Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, and today I’m happy to share new details surrounding Ratchet & Clank’s latest PSN adventure.

Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault heads back to the classic camera, weapons and third-person Ratchet gameplay that the series is known for, while adding a new tower defense element that will have you building and defending a base against invasions using your ultimate Ratchet & Clank arsenal. This new twist, added to the classic Ratchet gameplay, brings a whole new level of strategy and decision-making to Full Frontal Assault. You’ll want to make sure your Hoverboots are laced up and ready as you race to defeat your enemy while keeping your base secure. Wait, Hoverboots don’t have laces…

In Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, our heroes face a new nemesis – one who has a nasty surprise planned for Captain Qwark. You’ll be able to choose between playing as Ratchet, Clank, or Captain Qwark, and confront an alien army across five levels set on three different planets. The game allows you and a friend to play together with either split-screen or online cooperative gameplay.

Full Frontal Assault will give you a ton of reasons to keep playing, including an online mode we’ll reveal later, as well as loads of upgrades, extra character skins and unlockable content, but we’d like to show you first screenshots of the game here!

Everyone here is very excited to bring Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault to you this fall. In the meantime, for those of you hungering for a Ratchet & Clank fix, be sure to check out the Ratchet & Clank Collection when it launches in the U.S. on August 28th. You may have seen some of the great reviews from the European release.

There will be much more to come from Ratchet & Clank this summer and fall, as we celebrate their 10th Anniversary! To keep up with the latest news, be sure to like Insomniac Games on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.

Yay for classic style Ratchet, but BOO on tower defense. I despise tower defense.

Also, is this not included with R&C Collection anymore? Listings now state the collection comes with a code to download a demo of Sly 4. Boo I say!

There were tower defense pieces in deadlocked and/or up your arsenal if I remember correctly, so it's not a first for this series.

Though fundamentally a third-person shooter, the Ratchet & Clank series has rarely shied from bold genre experimentation: witness the progressive competitive and co-op modes of Ratchet: Deadlocked, the brain-busting temporal puzzles of A Crack in Time, even the four-player feuding of last year’s All 4 One. But with Full Frontal Assault, the storied series will undergo incorporate what is perhaps its most sweeping metamorphosis interesting twist yet, creating what developer Insomniac Games is calling “action tower defense.” Yep, Ratchet’s going all PixelJunk Monsters on us.

This is a logical, some might say inevitable, evolution when you consider the series’ gameplay trajectory, which despite its myriad twists and turns has focused squarely on two core elements: ludicrously powerful weaponry and freakish alien foes. In other words, the raw ingredients for a mean tower defense game. “One of the things we wanted to explore with Full Frontal Assault was large, sprawling battlefields,” Production Director Shaun McCabe told me. “The large battlefields in Up Your Arsenal and A Crack in Time added a lot of player choice. The decision to add tower defense felt organic…exploring large open battlefields and then returning to your base to set up defenses.” McCabe cited tower defense games like Dungeon Defenders and Orcs Must Die as key inspirations for Full Frontal Assault.

Posted Image

Though Insomniac Games isn’t allowing any hands-on play just yet, I learned much about Full Frontal Assault just by watching a few minutes of the game in action. The core gameplay looks to be plucked directly from fan favorite A Crack in Time; everything from the camera view and controls to those intoxicating hoverboots will make series traditionalists feel right at home. The story-driven campaign, which you can play solo or co-op, is strung together with traditional adventure sequences that combine shooting and platforming as Ratchet scours the surface of the planet Ebaro looking for secret weapon caches while fending off attacks from rampaging Grungarian marauders. So far, so good, until the monstrous mercenaries decide to attack your base — that’s when those tantalizing tower defense events kick into gear.

Your home base serves as the tower defense battlefield, and the floor is scattered with pads that enable you to deploy three basic types of units: Turrets, mines, and barriers. You’ll fend off multiple waves of incoming Grungarians by strategically placing these defenses, which you can combo together to devastating effect: a slow-mo mine combined with Combuster turrets can ravage a tough enemy before he breaks through your barrier. Enemies will come in all shapes and sizes, from swarms of tiny Grungoids to tough melee-centric Brawlers to crafty Engineers who seek to sabotage your defenses. Turrets, mines, and barriers will also come in many flavors, though Insomniac Games is remaining frustratingly tight-lipped about specifics for now.

Posted Image

Though you’ll need to monitor your base defenses carefully, you’ll hardly be dependent on them — Ratchet is a potent fighter and can swoop in to turn the tide in a besieged area. The combination of Ratchet’s exotic weapons and the effects of various turrets, mines, and barriers promises to create some unexpected and devastating combinations.

Between tower defense events, Ratchet will need to venture back into the battlefield to seek out more powerful weapons. “Most of the weapons in the game are ‘Ratchet classics,’” McCabe teased. “Our goal here is to give players almost more weapons than they can handle.” Upon finding a weapon pod, you’ll be forced to choose between unlocking one of two possible weapons. Plasmabomb Launcher or Warmonger rocket launcher? Decisions, decisions.

True to tower defense form, Full Frontal Assault awards you medals based on your performance in the tower defense segments, encouraging you to replay them again and again until you’ve completed them perfectly. The medals will unlock promotions, too, including new armor and perks for Ratchet, Clank, or Qwark.

Oh, and they’ll be a competitive mode, too, though Insomniac is saving those details for another occasion. “It builds on what we’ve shown here today,” McCabe teased. “And…I’m pretty good at it.”

Actually sounds interesting. Not just a straight up tower defense game. Conceptually almost sounds a bit like Dillons Rolling Western on 3DS. As long as the platforming is still tight (and hopefully encourages exploration!) I might give it a shot despite the tower defense focus.

I've played a bit of the single-player. They've definitely adapted the classic Ratchet & Clank gameplay to to MOBA-style levels where you're trying to take over nodes and reach the enemy base to capture the final node. I've just played the first level, so it could change up a bit more as I get further into it.

On the field, you have six generators to protect in your base with a lot of turret and mine spots that you can pay to put defenses there. There are weapon spawn points that give you new weapons with a little minigame that is similar to the reload mechanic in Gears of War. It has a lot of weapons to play with as you'd expect with a lot of familiar weapons from past games. In the campaign, they level up persistently while leveling up on a per-game basis in multiplayer.

There seem to be more to do to fully beat each of the levels in the campaign than just win, like beating them within certain time limits, collecting all of the gold bolts, and earning the specific skill points for each level. There are 117 skill points to earn that are mostly doing a certain thing X, Y, and Z times or completing certain objectives on each level, which accrue points to unlock bonus materials, game options, and cheats.
