Yeah you fly a rocket ship to space and are promptly reminded by a random NPC that "monsters invade from the moon every year, you didn't know?" I have always dropped the game at that point because of how offensive the plot was getting, but I'm going to actually see where it ends up this time.

Also I feel like I'm finally using the Junction system properly, or in other words, abusing the shit out of it. So my characters actually have high stats and I don't have to sit through 20 second summon animations every battle in order to win.

How to use the junction system: never cast magic.

But seriously, what the Fuck was that instrument-picking thing about? Like, could you win at it? Could you lose at it? Was it purely flavour?

People using terms like old-school or classic RPGs to induce nostagia so people will give them money is getting a little worn.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun agrees with you - http://www.rockpaper...rter-nostalgia/

BTW, Atlus announced Etrian Odyssey 4 for early 2013.

Fuck YES. Now all I need is Rune Factory 4 and it's 3DS GET :whee:

But seriously, what the Fuck was that instrument-picking thing about? Like, could you win at it? Could you lose at it? Was it purely flavour?

I think it just determines how good or terrible the music ends up sounding...

T-Rexaur man, there is a T-Rexaur on the first disc :D

They're in the training area in Balamb Garden too. That whole first section of the game has no shortage of T-Rexaur action.

Yessssss. Atlus <3

I recently played FF8 and it wasn't bad. Most of the game really wasn't memorable, but it was still enjoyable IMO. The story wasn't bad... I guess.

Oh, and eff Squall. Gosh, him and his emo self made the game unbearable at points. "I just want to be alone, man, so, like... leave me alone. No one will ever understand me and my deep thoughts."

I started playing Shining Force 3 yesterday. Why the hell haven't there been any more Shining Force games? I know Japan got one for the DS, but uhh....

Edit: That orphanage thing was freakin' dumb. PLOT.

That was like the defining characteristic of Final Fantasy VIII for me... All the things in the plot that were treated as big revelations were things that people who lived on that world would probably just know about.

Eh, Squall is actually a good representation of some introverts, and his condescending nature is what makes him fun to watch (at least on the first disc). Because to be fair, he is surrounded by morons (Quistis, Selphie, Zell, the headmaster, Timber resistance team, etc...). It's only Rinoa that exposes his actual insecurities, and that central relationship is pretty much the sole reason the game is playable. Call me a sap, but I enjoy that stuff.

Square should of admitted to that theory, would of looked good on them. But no, FF8 is just really fucking weird for no reason.

Yeah, that theory is a smarter take on the game than the actual story. I also like the theory that Ultimecia is a future version of Rinoa, once again a more interesting idea than any of the ideas that Square actually did have.

I liked that the FF8 characters were tall and looked like real pepole. The card game was lots of fun, and it was easy to abuse the junction system to create overpowered characters.
The story's a little crazy but that's to be expected with those games.

Currently playing Aedis Eclipse on the :psp: . Not as bad as I thought, still needs more sorting options on the menus and once you find the hidden characters most of the battles become a cake walk. It's an interesting diversion. And for $7, it's not bad.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun agrees with you -

While I agree with the sentiment the article is trying to raise, look at it from the other side, if any of these games were to try and get greenlit today it would not happen, and what's so wrong with doing a upgraded version of an older classic with current gen tech.

I agree with using nostalgia to get people to drop dime on these projects, that its cheap and shouldn't be done, however everyone today wants to know what the game is like, how it plays, yadda...yadda, so these developers only way to answer that is "it's a lot like this classic game you loved" so, catch-22 ya know.

I don't have as big of an issue with established and proven developers asking for money and using that verbiage.

And here's a question for everyone, is it nostalgia or an actual desire to see high quality games in the same vein as what was created before (rose tinted or not) I put some backing behind a few projects that I knew very little to nothing about or on startups that promised some great things, but mostly I did it out of trust for the developers and the hope they could deliver on their promises. Most of them have good track records, a few are unknown, up and comers, but they showed promise.

(addressing the Rock, paper, shotgun article) More than anything as far as this kickstarter-palooza is some of these titles were innovative for the time and that many people never played them before, (Ie. Wasteland) and can we all honestly say that some of these projects were based off of 100% nostalgia for these old titles. (I think most Wasteland 2 backers just want a new Fallout 1/2 clone with that game, since that was the series brought up most when people were discussing it)

So who knows, if anything I'd blame their lame attempts at marketing more than tugging at the heart strings out of the 6 I did support, I only played one of the games originally (carmageddon) so nostalgia played no factor in my support of the other five, so are people latching onto something that isn't really there, that's what I'd really like to know

My favorite FF8 music, btw...

The CAG motto: "Maybe you'll luck out and get the game during a sale before it sells out, maybe not, that's the life of a CAG. Luck of the draw. And timing is everything."

I just see it as a way to revitalize interest in great games. I don't think people really venture to the "classics" until they've gamed long enough to really appreciate the full spectrum of their hobby. I mean, people can go drop a few dollars at this very moment and be playing a truly engrossing experience, but choose not to because of the age difference. That's both a part of "ew, old" and because we tend to enjoy riding the hype wave with each new game release, and making them a community experience.

We want to play the games people are talking about, and by re-releasing the old stuff I think more people will notice the excitement and be willing to give these games a shot.

And Fuck nostalgia.

Thank you for the RPS article. I had missed that this week.

Personally, I think 'innovation' in video games is mostly dead. There isn't much innovation, particularly in AAA titles. So, mostly we are looking for something fun to play, even if it is familiar.

Yes, many are playing on nostalgia. (Leisure Suit Larry, Wastefall 2) But, I didn't support The Banner Saga, Lilly Looking Through and Gianna Sisters because of nostalgia. I supported them because they looked like games I wanted to play.

I think with Obsidian it is kinda a special case. While there is certainly nostalgia driving that from the Black Isle days, I think there are many who want to see what Obsidian can do with their own IP, rather than having them working on someone else's IP. Personally, I haven't gotten around to supporting it yet, and I haven't decided if I will.

Like what they said about the melee stuff, especially opportunity attacks. Wish there were grapples, though. Especially grappling on opportunity attacks. Hope reach weapons make it in.

Curious about their "attack synergy" thing. The question was framed with a DAO example - grease+fireball = big fucking fire thing. The response was positive, but he gave a more DA2-esque example, and I thought that whole system was abritrary as a motherfuck.

And hopefully the whole "tons of different spell defences and and buffs and dispels and preparations and shit" isn't a huge fucking pain in the ass to get in to this time around.

EDIT: Don't give a shit about the pet, but Fuck yeah modding!

First disc was great, but what did you think of the game after that? It goes into dungeon grind mode where before battles were only rare opportunities to get good Draws (I enjoyed that). Now I'm running up and down prisons, military bases, fighting stupid caterpillars in slowly animated battles and the story has lost all sense of coherence. If the idea is to be chaotic as possible, it's doing a fantastic job.

And I've always dropped the game after the space portion, but I plan to finish this time. I'll post my thoughts afterward.

EDIT: But I'm with blueshinra, and I think it does have the best piano arrangement in the series:

Nope. I like it too! Amazing music, fun sidequests, one of my favorite characters in the entire FF series (Laguna), Triple Triad, etc. It's far from perfect, but I honestly do like it.

EDIT: But I'm with blueshinra, and I think it does have the best piano arrangement in the series

It has the best arrange albums overall in the series. Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec is arguably just as good as the Piano Collections:
