I personally think that that is the best type of music and I just wanted to start a topic about it. So what are some genres/artists everyone listens to?

I Enjoy Orbital, dj Shadow, Nujabes, Gui Boratto, Crystal Castles, 80 Kidz, Boys Noize, Daft Punk. Generally I just listen random tracks from other artists but the ones I listed I enjoy on a more regular basis. Lovely genre.

I recognized a lot of those artists but yeah, I know what you mean. There are too many randoms to keep track of, lol. And it's and amazing genre :D

Almost forgot. Burial. He's been releasing some stuff the past few years. Not sure when he is due for another LP though. People who haven't listened to him (though he's not exactly obscure by any means) should go ahead and listen to his 2012 release "Kindred".

I love many different kinds of music but I don't understand this at all. Is it all just beeps and whistles or does anyone do any singing? I like rock music with electronic elements though - Shifting Skin by ON [a Ken Andrews side-project] is probably my all time favorite but it is still rock music at heart. That deadmau5 track is pretty good though - I just wish there was some singing otherwise it's more like background noise to me.

This is the problem with the general music audience. I guess people can't relate to music unless it has singing. Why is that so important? It's like the people that know the lead singer of a band but have no idea who the other guys are that make the band what it is. But who am I kidding, that's just background noise. You like songs, I like music. Electronica is a wonderful form of music that is so deep and layered, I prefer it not be riddled with vocals. That said, some songs that have vocals are great and can add to the experience but the best of the best is just instrumental, imo.

There are so many different sub-genres of techno that it goes far beyond "beeps and whistles." Entire genres exist of nothing but vocals, some of just drum and bass, etc. To the average listener, it will all sound the same, but once you actually get into the music, you'll be able to distinguish all of the differences over time.

Personally, I listen to a good mix of frisson, trance, house, lounge, chill, and whatever else comes up on random for the day.

There's many different kinds and I'm certainly not enough of an enthusiast to give good explanations, but in general electronic music takes time to appreciate, similar to more complicated forms of rock and instrumental. Most people like the catchy stuff, but deeper tracks often sound repetitive until you give them a good listen all the way through.

That deadmau5 track progresses through some unbelievable layers, so make sure to use the best sound system possible!

Some other kinds I've been listening to recently:

Tokimonsta:

Gold Panda:

Four Tet:

Cahb (drum & bass):

Some decent dubstep:

I like music just fine. I've got nothing against instrumentals or anything but I do prefer there to be some singing involved at some point otherwise it gets monotonous. Computers are just too impersonal/precise to get me to "feel" anything. I could listen to long Clapton or Page solos in the middle of 20+ minute songs and never get sick of them but that's because the solos actually go somewhere. I don't know. Personal preference I guess.

For example (since it is in your sig), Ghosts I-IV is really good but I'll never just put it on while I'm in the car but if I'm at work and not really paying attention it is good in the background. I do wish that he recorded vocals over a lot of these tracks though - it would be an amazing NIN album but instead if I want to listen to NIN I'd much rather put on The Fragile.

I didn't know DJ Shadow was considered electronic music. To be honest, I don't think I've heard that term until right now. DJ shadow - Organ donor. Man, I can bust some moves to this beat. Know any other songs like that?

HUGE Electronic Music fan. Ive been since mid 90's. Depeche Mode is easily my favorite band, for many reasons, and one of the most influential bands to EDM of all time.

The reason why ive gravitated to loving Electronic music over any other genre is because it evolves much faster than most others (in a good way or bad way (dubstep IMO :shame:), compared to other genres that stay stagnate or offer nothing new. Mostly why i haven't liked most American music in years.

There's TONS of sub genres in Electronic music and i've heard most of them and i've always found something i like or don't. I still kina prefer a "Rock / Band" element to it, which is still hard to come by.

2 of my favorite current bands are Pendulum and Celldweller for that reason. Electronic sound with in a "Rock" background, and a perfect example why i love EDM in the first place.

"Celldweller - Wish Upon A Black Star" just came out 4 days ago and i HIGHLY recommend it. :)

And Pendulum, who i've raved about on this board plenty of times before.

I'm mostly familiar with your first 4 examples. The Avalanches are godly. I think they are soon releasing a reissue of their debut which is pretty much one of the best start to finish albums I've heard in any genre.

(sorry I couldn't quote your examples. It was messing up my post)

The spoiler tags were screwing up for me too.

I created an Avalanches station on Pandora and it gave me a lot of similar stuff. I played "Since I left you" while at a resort in the Carribean and every time I hear it, it takes me back...

Nice thread. I have recently gotten into electronic music and sub-genres like trance but have really no idea where to go for new music ideas/discussion. This thread and links in the thread will be a great help.

Do this.

Go to pandora. Put in some artist you're familiar with. Make a station and listen to it. You'll get a treasure trove of new music based on what is similar. I'll occasionally have some crossover between channels I create, and some true wtf moments, but overall it's a decent way to broaden your horizons some.

the first four minutes of that deadmau5 song "Strobe" that was posted is awesome...the rest of it sucked.

Edit: mtxbass1, that Tycho artist or w/e you call him is pretty good.

Electronic Music is just the genre of music, its like saying "Rock Music" or "Jazz music", etc.

In that, you got your sub genres (Different types of electronic music). Techno, House, Trance, Dubstep and many many many more. More collectively just called EDM. (Electronic Dance Music).

"Techno" was a sub genre that was big in the 90's, and thats when it was getting some recognition state side. Ever since, people that don't really know about EDM just label it ALL as "Techno", which drives me nuts. Im not a huge fan of it, but back in the 90's Techno and House music ruled all. Techno is still around, but EDM has evolved so much from its original tree branch of genres.

Just follow Trance big acts like Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Above & Beyond. They all have weekly/monthly radio shows where they play new tracks and current good stuff.

The Avalanches are great!! How did I miss this thread? I stick with the Downtempo/Acid Jazz/ Turntable works of Four Tet, DJ Shadow, Koop and of course, Avalanches.

I prefer the nonvocal stuff myself. So many great songs are ruined by awful lyrics.

I'm more into chilled stuff but sometimes I throw in Digitalism or YouTuber Ronald Jenkees if I want something uptempo.

Probably tops for me in the electronic-chill-shoegaze-whatever arena are Boards of Canada and Air (the French duo). Music Has the Rights to Children, Campfire Headphase, Moon Safari, Talkie Walkie - these are some of my favorite albums ever.

I recently discovered Ciaran Byrne who has an amazing Boards-y sound. Maybe even closer to Boards than Tycho - who is finding a nice sound of his own.

I'm dabbling in Squarepusher and Mogwai. They have vocals of course, but I'm really digging Neon Indian and Washed Out.

I've been listening to a ton of electronic dance music lately. I like Skrillex a lot even though some of it is redundant.

I've always been more into downtempo electronic music. I mixed 5 albums of various stuff and play them still all the time. Massive Attack are gods.

Avalanches second album is basically finally done. Should be out either late this year or early next.

Music Has The Right To Children is insanely good. Check out Squarepusher's newest, Ufabulum, it's good stuff and almost no vocals.

I've been out of the electronics scene for a few years, but I still love progressive trance.

Personally, I more often prefer to not have lyrics I can understand.

I used to love Armin's show, but he's gone way too far off track with vocal trance. It has become a state of pop for the most part, but his annual-ish shows still rock. Mostly because the sets from other people are amazing.

I highly recommend M.I.K.E. (Push) as far as radio shows go. He has never disappointed me, ever. Markus Schulz GDJB is the only other show I listen to now as well.

Couple of tracks from artist known by "Seven Lions" that i have on repeat. Its the production on it that i fucken love.

That's always been my love/hate relationship with Trance, it jumps the line to Pop to frequently. Especially when every one starts using the same dam Vocal artist on there album.

Above and Beyond are the only trance acts that dont steer to far of what consistent trance is to me. There last studio album "Group Therapy" was filled with gorgeous songs.

I wish. Above and Beyond came here last weekend and I missed out on that show. Ugh.

I have both of Jenkees albums and damn if they aren't solid. Highly recommended by me.
Their first album falls under the genre. Their second album is oddly enough electronic music infused with 70's arena classic rock. So the second album is not for everyone (although I love it).
I saw them live a couple months ago, super awesome show. Their first album is definitely better, but their second is really fun to listen to.

I went to Identity last year here in Dallas and loved it. I jumped on the first day sale for this years show. I can't wait!

How about the fucking legend

Love that song, off his new album that came out a few weeks ago. He's headlining ID Festival, and he's gonna be in LA next month so I'm gonna get to see him for the first time :)

Just saw this thread, big fan of house music but definitely harder, louder songs :). Like skrillex haha, but Seven Lions is really good, and basically anything top 10 on beatport.com is worth a listen

Does anyone else find Deadmau5's constant comments about the genre annoying? Guy acts like he is the god of EDM and whatever he says should go.

I always felt the same about KRS-one with hip-hop music. No one elected these clowns.
He makes damn good music, so if he's a douche sometimes then there it is. Same with Kanye West.
Yeah but Kanye doesn't "Speak for hip-hop". I don't mind douchiness, I do mind someone thinking they are the authority on anything involving your music genre.

No respecting dance listener even acknowledges him. People who haven't been exposed to real producers like him.

And fuck YES Prydz aka Pryda aka Cirez D aka the master is right up there with Eco as my favorite trance producers ATM. This one still gives me goosebumps, even though it's only a remix:
