Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time coming to PSP / PSN on July 31st!

Anyone else here excited for this game?

Growlanser Generations (PS2) was (two of the) best RPGs I ever played. What I love most about this series is that in the major battles "killing all of the enemies" is not the only obejective. For example, during some battles there are civilians that will be killed unless your party can rescue them, sometimes you're trying to prevent an enemy from escaping, sometimes you're just trying to survive until you can retreat from a force too powerful for your party.

Growlanser also has the most complex relationship system I have ever seen in a RPG. In addition to many dialogue choices that affect your relationship, your companions will actually like you more if you are a successful leader in battle. The game has over 40 possible endings based on who you befriend and what choices you make.

This is like the only game I'm interested until Perdona 4 Golden. I have not played the series, but it looks like my kind of a game.

I think anyone who likes RPGs will love this game. It takes all of the best elements from traditional RPGs, tactical RPGs, and real-time strategy games and this makes for a really fun game.
Got it preordered. Really hope it's good.
Cool, I hope you like it.
I'll definitely be getting it! I hate (suck at) RTS, but maybe it'll have an easy mode. :)
To clarify about the RTS elements... while your characters move in real-time you can choose what you want each party member to do in turn... So it is sort of like a hybrid of RTS and turn-based RPG. Also, you can interrupt a character who is in the middle of an action if you realize that you need to change your strategy.

There's no easy mode, but there are ways to make your party stronger (there's a bonus dungeon and arena where you can acquire some magic items and level up your characters... And in your second playthrough (you'll want to play this game more than once) you can use the new game plus option which lets you carry over some of your rings / gems.

Btw, Atlus released the trailer yesterday:
Yup, will likely get it Day 1 and proceed to wait a year or two before I play it. :(
Vita owner or do you just have a huge backlog?

If you enjoyed Growlanser 3 from Growlanser Generations, you should enjoy this one.

Yep, I hear the battle system for this game is basically like Growlanser III except with some new features (i.e., Limit Abilities) and other enhancements.

Of course, if you're never played a game in the series before, this is as good a place as any to start, since the story is not tied with the other games.

Looks like Amazon is shipping them out. Mine and a friends shipped already.

I own Growlanser 4 on the PS2 (JPN Version), so yes, it's very much like Growlanser 3 but better. I never did actually beat it because it was too text heavy for me to really enjoy and progress without hating life. However I did enjoy the 10 hours or so I put into it.

getting it Weds off gamefly for 12.49 using a 10 buck coupon i had that was about to expire....

too bad very good chance this will be the final good rpg on the system

UPS pushed up my delivery from Amazon by a day, so it should be here tomorrow morning sometime. If I take a few minutes to play tomorrow, I'll post some impressions. (I've never played the games for any more than a few mins. here and there to get a feel for them)

You won't hit gameplay in the first few minutes if I remember right. A lot of text at the start and cutscenes.

Yeah I'll usually give 15 mins. but if it's slow going then I'll go 30-60, or skip as many cut scenes as I can to get to the action to play it, but thanks for the heads up. (The game is sitting to my left, just need to put it in the PSP and check it out)

Also it was nice to see Vita compatibility right from the onset, so Atlus made the preemptive move to make sure that unlike Gungnir, they were ready to go with this one, which makes a lot of sense.

i was expecting something like FF game not a drag and walk game ...

maybe play it over the weekend and dump.. shouldnt have problems getting the 22 i paid for it (if i want to try to recoup the gamefly bucks. really paid like 12 with10 gamefly bucks)

you have to buy the download for the vita right though .. if you buy the UMD for the psp there is no way to transfer it ?

That is correct. If you want to play the game on a Vita you must buy the PSN version. Currently the only way to play it on Vita is to download onto a PS3 and then transfer to the Vita. It should be up on the Vita store soon, though.

I think I'm finally catching up to where I left off. I don't remember the game as clearly as I thought because every time I'm like "This place doesn't seem familiar..." I will end up getting a strange sense of déjà vu in the next area and remember playing it. Then again, I played it at least half a decade ago.

Regardless, I'm still liking the way the game handles itself.

Somehow I am not surprised.

Maybe you should have fucking watched a video of ANY game in the series before buying it. It plays exactly as expected. No one's fault but your own.

Oh well, I guess I just don't like SRPGs anymore. I don't like this game for the reasons I just can't stand SRPGs anymore, even if non-event/boss combats are so fast they don't even feel like SRPG battles. Oh well, I'm sure if you like SRPGs, you'll like this game, but this game sure hasn't broken the cycle for me.

Hmm, strange, I don't even really think of Growlanser as a true SRPG... It's more like a traditional RPG with tactical / real-time strategy elements. I don't really care for tactical RPGs like FF Tactics, but I love Shining Force and Growlanser. Like you said, the battles tend to be more fast paced than SRPGs. I guess it starts getting harder but I'm really loving it so far (about 25 hours in).

Did you play it all the way through or quit somewhere in the middle?

I quit fairly early on. Only had the first three dudes in my party. The normal battles are fast and not really SRPG-like at all, and yet I still found them repetitive and boring. The missions, however, really drive home all of the elements of SRPGs that really piss me off (escorts, "lol if the enemy reaches this ONE square GAME OVER," etc).

Yeah, I guess you're just not a SRPG fan. It seems a lot of people hate escort missions with a passion. I don't really mind them though and there aren't many in this game (Only seen two so far and I think one of them was optional). It helps that you can cast spells and use items on the NPC you're protecting.

I think I'm pretty close to the end of my first playthrough. Just haven't had much time to play it lately because I've been busy with work etc. It's an awesome game. My only criticism of this game is that it does have a slow start; the first couple hours are basically battle tutorials and introducing you to the world. But after that it's really engrossing.

It's a shame that some people will probably overlook the game because it's on a "dead" system or it has dated graphics. Yes, the graphics are dated, but the gameplay is so good, I don't care. Everyone with a PSP who likes RPGs should give this game a shot. It is supposed to be up on the Vita store on September 4th, too.
