I think you need a very open mind to play in this league, or just Madden online in general. No matter how "sim" you try and play, SOMEONE is going to have a problem with something you do. I used to pride myself on having a very sim, clean game style...but then BV pointed out that I drop back too far in the pocket on throws. Don't take this a passive-aggressive attack on BV, it's very far from it...I'm just using this as an example of how there is going to be SOMETHING in everyone's game that can legitimately be deemed "cheesy" or "exploitative". I would never in a million years think about the ramifications of something like dropping back too far in the pocket. I've heard people complain about too much man-press, too much zone, too much passing, too much running, too much blitzing, too many players in coverage...there is literally a complaint on everything. You have to have thick skin to play in this league, and just take the good with the bad. This game can never truly be "sim" IMO unless EA perfects the AI, which is probably impossible.
Great post. Very true.
EDIT: I think my downfall was trying to play exactly by the rules and then losing to people who did not follow them as I felt I did. As you say though it's opened to interpritation. IE. Fero ran 4 receivers tight and then ran with the QB, I considered that cheap because we weren't supposed to send a bunch of RECEIVERS wide and then run with the QB. Fero obviously felt it was fair because he had Tight Ends lined up instead of WRs and they were not wide. I am not typing this to take a shot at Fero. I though this was actually a good example of how one play could be seen differently by two players. It's a slippery slope.
