Come with me my fellow CAGren. To the land where we play through our Scrooge McDuck-like treasure vaults of games instead of hoarding them to go untouched. To the place where we can tell our own emergent gameplay stories of grenades rolling down Far Cry's hills instead of listening to podcasts telling their own. To the mind state of eschewing achievements and 100%ing open worlds for rewardless results.

Join me!

This is kind of cool. All Independent Games Festival finalists will be offered a spot on Steam. There have been some stumbles, but I really do think Valve is trying to make it easier to get quality indies on the service.

You can only make a dent in it. Once I realized I had so many games I tried playing them to completion as often as possible and also stopped buying indie bundles since half of them are games I will never want to play to completion.

I have beaten roughly 110 games in the last 3 years (I didn't have a job the first year so I beat 52 games in that year alone and I still do play games multiplayer games) and that doesn't even meet the amount of games I have gained in the last 3 years. That also isn't counting all the games I got prior to that time. Oh, and really I started doing the beat the games to completion thing because I realized I just wasn't enjoying games as much as I used to so I changed up how I played them.

Sounds like me. At the height of my console gaming life, I had over 150 games and would pop one in randomly, play a bit (getting no where towards completion) and then plop another in, rinse and repeat. I do take much more satisfaction and enjoyment now from focusing on one title (or even genre) and playing through to completion. It's just that some of these games I love either can't be completed "quickly" (i.e. Skyrim) or I love playing through multiple time (again Skyrim, Mass Effect, Borderlands), so they become time sponges. I guess I'll use the time from now till Amazon's Editor's Choice to pick up those last deals and then, like has been mentioned, cut myself off. As for the indie bundles...well...it'll be hard to pass up those deals during the year. The upcoming AAA game sales (Bioshock, Remember Me, The Last of US, DS3, ...) I think I can fully hold out until late next year. I certainly have enough to keep me busy

I'm on a game purchasing moratorium probably until January with the Amazon editor's choice sales but we'll see how much I play between now and Christmas. I suppose it's fortunate that there isn't much out there that I'm interested in and don't already own. But I bought some recent AAA titles lately and intend to have them played before I'm thinking "Huh, so that's $5 now? I thought it was a great deal when I paid $18 for it..."

I still enjoy seeing/finding great deals though and get a little bit of a fix by passing them along to other people rather than buying them myself. Maybe I can just collect deals instead of the games :D

Same here, recently I've been having to tear myself away from my web browser in search for new deals on games, and instead navigate myself over to the steam client to look at all the games I have already that I haven't played.

I probably have a handful of games I play regularly, depending on my mood, but it's nice knowing there's still a bunch of games I haven't touched yet if I feel like trying something new every once in a while.

When Indie Bundles first started happening I was like oh yeah, I am gonna buy them all up, $5 for 4-5 games. Then I started to play some of those games and my outlook went to $5 for 4-5 games or wait and get a game I will play for $5 Steam Sale. I mean I still buy indie bundles if a game I want is in them, but it has become less of a thing for me.

My problem is I often hop around games. I will buy one game, start playing it. Get sidetracked from something else, then forget about it. I need to learn to focus my time and energy on one game (well one singleplayer game, multiplayer is a different story), and then play it to completion (not 100% it, but at least finish the story and all).

Oh yeah I said screw 100%. If it has a story then completion to me is finishing the story.

It took quite some time to really force myself to just start playing something. For example Jak & Daxter (played it for the first time two years ago) took me about a week or two to finally sit down and start, but once I did I went through that game and its two Naughty Dog sequels in about a month, and it has easily become one of my favorite game series. The hardest part of focusing on the games, in my case I did 2 games at a time usually on different systems, was actually starting them. Or if they sucked to actually keep playing them.

Today's deal is Defcon at 75% off ($2.49)

Inspired by the 1983 cult classic film, Wargames, DEFCON superbly evokes the tension, paranoia and suspicion of the Cold War era, playing on the fascinating aspects of psychological gameplay that occur during strategic nuclear warfare. You play a General hidden deep within an underground bunker.
Genre: Strategy, Indie

Weekend Deal is FTL at 40% off ($5.99)

You can get it directly from the developer for the same price and it includes both DRM free Win, Mac, and Linux and a Steam key.

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields?
Genre: Strategy, Indie, Simulation

Is it really as fun as everyone is making it out to be? I'm going to generalize here and say that I'm typically not fond of top-down action games. All this talk has me curious, however. I initially passed on Dark Souls due to all the "brutal difficulty" talk, but it has easily become one of my favored drugs. I don't want to miss out on another gem due to narrow mindedness.

I was really surprised by it. I didn't think I was going to like it for the same reason, that it's a top down action game, and the insane hype pushed me away. However, much like Super Meat Boy, the feel of the game won me over. Unfortunately that's something you can't get from watching videos or reading impressions. I thought the boss fights sucked, but the game felt great and I enjoyed it. KB+M was fine, but I really preferred it with my 360 pad so that may be a consideration. It needs a demo.

It's Steamworks and it's on Amazon's games of 2012 list you will be able to use the $5 vouchers on. At minimum you will be able to get it half off for the entire month of January from Amazon if you have a voucher (which by the way get from buying pretty much anything there right now including 75 cent DLC).

If we're lucky it might even go on sale for 50% off + $5 voucher = free.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It is a puzzle game with action sequences really. Most people I've seen that complain about it go in thinking it is a pure action game when you really can't just go balls to the wall crazy all the time. The music is awesome too.

that is good point, I got Rome Total War, AC1 and Dungeon Siege 3 for free with those $5 coupon Amazon gave out last year but then again Hotline Miami is great game and its easily worth the $5 asking price

People think it's an action game? Weird. I thought it was more of a stealth game than it it. It walks a fun and interesting line between tactics and intense action. I like it. I also think that it is polished where it needs to be (e.g. instant death-restarts).

Exactly, I bet it'll be free with promo credit. No reason to buy it now when January is so close. Also, hold off on Darkness 2 if it goes on sale, it's another game that has a decent chance of being free.

I think my best two gaming-related purchases this year are Double Fine Adventure and Amnesia Fortnight. There's not a lot of game to play yet, but seeing behind the scenes with hours and hours of live streams and the compact 25 minute produced videos the joy to be had is high. The DFA episodes are also great to watch with a significant other who may not like gaming as much as you.

You can still get in the Amnesia Fortnight here. You'll get five prototypes at the end of the event and videos of each day. The live streams are free here.

Thanks for calling this to my attention. I sent them an email last night when I saw you post this. No reply yet, but I'm sure they're getting swamped.

This is hilarious. I forwarded near the end. Make sure to wait for the 2-3 second pause as that's when a new code starts out with the clicks representing hash marks.
