Awesome Controller Kickstarter!

shipalicious

CAGiversary!
Some friends and I have been working on a project part-time for the last year to allow you to play old consoles (NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, etc.) with modern Bluetooth controllers (Wiimote, Dualshock 3, etc.). We finally launched a Kickstarter project at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1604893288/awesome-controller to raise enough money to manufacture the first 200 units.

If it sounds compelling or you'd like to know more, feel free to visit us at any of the following locations:

* Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1604893288/awesome-controller)
* Home page (http://www.awesomecontroller.com/)
* Twitter (https://twitter.com/AwesomeControl or https://twitter.com/kyleashipley)

Are you a bad enough dude to help us build this product? :)

Thanks!

Kyle
So it's like an MC Cthulhu but wireless?
We just found out about the MC Cthulhu this morning from a question on our Kickstarter. Looks cool, and we might buy one just to play with it!

I think we have a few differentiators:

1. Wireless
2. Open source, upgradable firmware
3. No soldering required

#1 is a big one for me. #2 is nice because if someone else adds support for a new system or feature, you can upgrade your own Awesome Controller and get it immediately. If you're a programmer, you can see all the tricks we're using to make it work, in case you want to do your own crazy project. (SNES Mario Kart over the internet with an Awesome Controller and a webcam? Do it!) #3 is great if you're not handy with a soldering iron. (It's deceptively tricky.)

Whether or not we hit our Kickstarter goal, we're going to write up some documentation on how the different systems work so that other people can build cool things too.

Wow I've never heard of the MC Cuthulu, does anyone have one?

Also I'll definitely be backing this. I've been looking forward to it since you guys announced it!

Bookmarked. If I have some spare cash after paying my bills, I'll throw up a pledge myself. You guy need to plan on some sega saturn support though ;P

Yeah I would love to see some Saturn support as well as PC Engine. I'd ask for Marty and others like Amiga CD32 but I'm probably dreaming there.

Heck using the wireless dongle to use my MVC2 Madcatz TE stick on Saturn fighting games=win.

Saturn is probably the only mainstream system we don't own, although we're going to track one down. The Saturn protocol looked very similar to Genesis and Dreamcast (which makes sense), so once we get Genesis and Dreamcast working, we'll get on it.

Also, re: Sarang01: the point of Awesome Controller is to have open, upgradable firmware, so even if we don't get Amiga CD32 working, some mysterious programmer on the internets can add support and you can patch it in!

We've done some basic rumble tests with the Wiimote, but haven't hooked up the full rumble experience. I think it's in scope, though.

We'd like to support memory cards for both the N64 and Dreamcast, but we haven't gone too far down that road yet. I'm not sure exactly what it would look like -- maybe a specially-formatted USB stick. It's highly unlikely we'll support the Dreamcast's crazy VMU screen, though, so you'll have to get your Chao Adventure fix somewhere else.

Ship in terms of memory stick, if you can get it that far, any chance you might be able to ape a zip drive or better for the Dreamcast?
As far as I know the Dreamcast had the best 3D RPGmaker so far graphicswise and I get the impression it was easy to use. It's called "Dream Studio" and its even believed the original idea may have been to use the Zip drive coming for the Dreamcast. Bottom line the VMU wasn't the original idea in terms of storage which is why it is suppose to suck up a ton of space.
Shame Sega never got around to releasing a PC version of it as it takes a dump on any 3D RPG Maker tools that I know of so far, at least in the quality of graphics.
edit: I was just thinking that the code might still be there on "Dream Studio" to take advantage of said peripheral.

If I had the money, I would so back this! I like the idea of using a Dual Shock 3 with all these old school game systems, especially the N64 and the Dreamcast.

Sarang,

We're definitely in scope creep territory here. :)

I think that mimicking add ons that only work for a tiny number of games is probably outside of what we can focus on for launch. As I mentioned, though, we're planning to let other people hack on our code as well, so if you know anyone that's passionate about the Dreamcast's RPG maker and knows how to program, we'll happily help them get started.

I would grealy enjoy rumble support for games that support it guys. You guys will probably get plenty of money out of me considering I have every console you want to support -_-
