Frys/Frys.com 1 TB HDD $59 (Great for the PS3)

Man.... Now I want to go to Fry's but I don't need one either!! Though I do have a 160gb in there only. Should I be concerned about drive capacity versus heat? I have the older 80gb model with PS2 software compatibility.
Can one of those even be fully used on a PS3? I thought the max was 640 gigs
before i sold my ps3, i was using a 1tb and the ps3 recognized it as a full 1tb.

I'd be a little wary of this drive as I can't find any reviews for it anywhere between NewEgg.com, Frys.com and Amazon.com, plus random Google searches on the product number.

I'm not saying that there's an issue with it, just no reviews anywhere to back up its reliability or use in a PS3.

It's also out of stock for shipping, so it's in-store only at the moment.

I'm at Fry's now and it's a 5400RPM drive by the way, on case anyone was wondering. As I've had 5400RPM drives in my PS3 in the past, this isn't a speed downgrade for me.

For comparison, the 500gb 7200RPM variant is $64.99.

In store only mention seconded.

I've been wanting to upgrade to a 1TB for a while. Seems like a good price. FWIW Shrike the drive is a Western Digital (HGST is a WD company apparently) so it should be okay. I'm thinking I'll pick on up and give it a try.

If HGST is a WD company (hard to keep track of who's who still in the drive industry), then they should be reasonably quality drives. Though, when Samsung's HDD business was picked up by Seagate, the SpinPoint drives seemed to be getting worse in quality.

I know that I have seven Scorpio Black drives (one 750GB in my PS3 that has worked fantastically) two WD GP-AV drives and five RE4 drives, I have quite a few WD drives that I've bought and have had zero issues with.

Sure, sure. I have the same concerns as you. No reviews is cause for caution. I just wanted to state that it says on the product page under manufacturer "HGST a Western Digital company" so I'm thinking it may be okay to gamble on it.

Bought a 1TB Samsung drive on Newegg about two weeks ago for $70ish.

Make sure it's 2'5, 5400 RPM (some say this doesn't matter and some swear that it does due to heat).

Also remember that just because it's 1 TB doesn't mean your'e going to get 1 TB, You'll wind up with more like 850gb and if you're wanting to back up then you're going to need a external HD with enough room to hold everything and backing up and restoring takes a very long time if you have a lot of data. You'll also need a thumb drive (or that same external hd) and download the PS3 firmware.

It was incredibly easy to install. Had zero issues.

Yeah I hear the 7200 RPM's can cause your PS3 to overheat. I believe this. My PS3 runs hot from time to time and running a faster HDD is only going to make it run hotter. Either way better safe than sorry. I have 750GB Samsung I got from Newegg for 59.99.

Thanks for the tip. I was tempted to get the faster drive but with less space. But, better safe than sorry I suppose. Plus the whole point of the deal was more space :)

FYI, HGST stands for Hitachi Global Storage Technology.

When you open up the package, the HDD says "HITACHI" on it. In fact, the label looks identical (in format & style) to the same HDD Sony is currently putting in the 250GB PS3 Superslims, which also has HITACHI HDDs in them.

Both drives share the exact same RPM rating, and voltage requirements....

Just got back from picking it up. It's got a Hitachi logo right on the box. Hopefully it's a decent drive.

EDIT :pic since it happened.

Here's the video/tutorial I used to help me install my 1TB. The guy explains everything very well and it covers everything. If you don't plan to back up and restore your old HDD you can skip that part of the video.

I also have a Hitachi Touro Mobile 500GB portable/external, and it's been good.

I'm restoring my data from the PS3 Backup Utility as I type this, and will keep the old drive and leave the data untouched for a couple of weeks just in case :)

This is the second time I've upgraded the hard drive on my old PS3, and once it quick formatted the new 1TB, I noticed the system itself retained my Profiles and login information. Just game data and saves weren't there (which I'm restoring from the backup I made just before).

You are correct about the amount of actual storage. I had my PS3 format my HDD and it reported ~930GB of total space and ~820GB of storage space. I don't know what happened with that ~110GB of missing space...

Yup, I know what to do. It's not my first replacement. Though it should be my last. I swapped out for a 500GB when I first got the PS3 when it launched. 66 hours remaining on my backup!
if i do store pickup and pick it up on a different day.

would the price be different or still $60?
Different. I did the in-store pickup and it says in the pickup email "Order number, XXXXXXXX, must be picked up before store closing hours on 12/24/12. The prices are subject to change after 12/24/12."

Glad I read the email or I wouldn't have gotten the drive. All the in-store pickup option does is hold the item for you, you're not actually purchasing it until you pick it up. Don't know why they need a CC if they aren't charging it.

schit.......hm..

wonder if it will drop down to this price again

Is there any limit to the size HDD the old fat PS3 can use? Back in the day supposedly you weren't supposed to go above 500 GB. I'm going to stick with the 5400 rpm drives as to not take any chances.

The WD Scorpio Black uses no more power and generates no more heat than a 5400RPM drive, so it's no different than a run-of-the-mill 5400RPM drive.

I've not found any temperature difference with my stock 320GB 5400RPM drive vs the current 750GB 7200RPM drive in my slim PS3.

My HTPC has two internal 750GB Scorpio Black drives and they're always very cool.
PS3 uses up ~12% of any drive you put in it for some ridiculous reason I never understood.
probably caching, and system stuff, pretty much every computer is like this as well it eats up a portion of the HDD.
probably caching, and system stuff, pretty much every computer is like this as well it eats up a portion of the HDD.
It's like 8MB for NTFS regardless of HDD size, this issue is completely separate from the naming convention issue where 1TB in manufacturer specs differs from 1TB in binary reading.
Would this be good for a fat PS3 or does it not matter which console version it is?
I have the fat PS3 and it formatted and restored a backup just fine. :)

So, I ordered two of these (two separate orders since it said only one per household and I figured I'd give it a shot anyway) on the 24th. I didn't get my "ready for pickup" emails until the 26th and they both said I had until the 27th to pick them up.

So I head down there today only to be told that one of the orders was "expired" and they didn't have the other order in their cage so the guy goes back to the computer section and brings back just one drive (the only one left) and it's an open box drive. I put up a stink and show them that I have both order emails and both "ready for pickup" emails saying that I have until today to pick up the drives. Eventually after walking around with the cashier for about 20 minute and talking to 4 different people, it gets escalated up to the main manager and I end up getting two comparable Seagate Momentus drives (STBD1000100) which have pretty favorable reviews on Amazon and Newegg (including many people using them in PS3s). And I ended up getting them for $59 instead of $59.99, so I saved an addition $1.98 (+tax)...enough for a candy bar on my way out ;-)

Normally I hate dealing with the employees as Frys, but overall they were pretty helpful, especially the cashier who was 2 minutes from going home before he got stuck with solving my issue and ended up working 15-20 minutes late (and probably not getting paid for it).

HGST became part of WD in March this year. So it is apossibility the drive are still Hitachi drives. Not saying that is a good or bad thing, but I would count on it being WD reliability.

On HGST site: HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) joined the Western Digital Corporation family of companies in March 2012
Back up of 400GB took 11 hours and the restore took about 30 hours. Hopefully with a TB drive I never have to do that again...
Took my system about 50 hours to back up about the same amount of data. Will start the restore process this weekend. Hopefully it doesn't take days again.
