WELP. I'm not sure what this means in practice, but it doesn't sound the same as last night.

"This policy sounds similar to what exists on PlayStation 3 today — for example, EA notably implemented an Online Pass system as a method for limiting online access to secondhand purchasers. Publishers also have similar freedom on PCs, where consumers can choose to support games whose DRM policies they find appropriate"

This is what I'm thinking.  Publishers already dictate their own policies on PC and to some degree on console.  However, Sony as a first party developer going with little to no DRM will hopefully influence other prublishers to keep DRM to a minimum on their system.

I think it just means the PS4 maintains the status quo from the PS3.

The PS3 does have DRM limits. Can only install digital games on so many consoles, need online pass, etc. The PS4 will still have that. But it doesn't appear to have a all encompasing system like the Xbox one that looks at every aspect of DRM down to if you can only trade in your used games at Gamestop and Amazon.

Like, I see the difference between the two as the difference between the Kindle and a blu-ray movie. The PS4 uses the basic blu system. You buy a blu, it may have some DRM to try to prevent you from copying, it may have some code in the case that allows you to download bonus content and special featues one time. Maybe a one time digital download of the movie itself. But the core movie on the disc you can give to a friend or trade in. You own the blu-ray and the movie on it to do what you like.

With a Kindle, you bought the book in digital format but Amazon locks that market so they have extra rights. For example, they can make changes to the book you just bought. And they can limit you sharing with a friend for fourteen days. And you can't trade it in compared if you bought an actual book. With the Xbox you buy a disc but that's just a content delivery tool. The platform itself is aligning from a DRM standpoint closer to a Kindle in that they may, and the word is may, limit when you can trade in a game, when and how long a friend can borrow a game, etc.

And note, this is only with physical copies. On either platform when you download a game you are basically locked into the digtial DRM model. I think what concerns me and other people is the established concept on who "owns" a physcial copy of a game and the "rights" you have with a physical copy. When you buy a phsical DVD, CD, book, or a game, those "rights" are pretty much well established. Imgine if Sony had introduced blu-ray and then stated once you buy a blu new you'd only be able to sell the movie used at Amazon, Gamestop, BestBuy and other "participating" retailers. It would bother people because it changes the rights relationship. Even if they never really enforced it.

And it comes down to a matter of perspective. Is a disc the content you own, or is it just a digital delivery system? For example, if I have a file on my USB, It's not the USB that's the content, it's the file. Or look at some people who go nuts over is DLC is on disc or not? I prefer a company put future DLC on disc and just make me download a 100kB key to unlock it. I would prefer that than having to download a 2 Gig update that takes up hard drive space. But I at least understand the arguiment.

It appears to me that MS, being a software company, is putting a line in the sand and arguing that a disc is just a content delivery system. All games need to be installed, you have limits on what you can do with that game, whatever. Sony is sticking to the traditional model that the game is the disc. They both have every right to do this. And as consumers we have every right not to weigh the issues and choose to buy or not. (Though, as an aside, I am concerned that MS's used game policy is anti-competitive and may violate anti-trust law. But that's another story.)

***************************

This is how the big three approached E3 this year IMO.

Microsoft: "Americans love the xbox like grandma and apple pie."

Sony: "Apples! How do you like them apples!"

Nintendo: "Err, who wants to play Mario Kart? Anybody?"

One more comment, I listened to three podcasts after MS revealed their DRM policy in May. Joystiq, Cagcast, and Rebel FM. And all three of them totally missed how important this issue was to players. Maybe because they're more involved in the games industry. But all three shrugged their shoulders, said some gamers seemed disgruntled, and moved on. I think Cheapy at least said that the used game market is important for cheap games. But that was it. Both Joystiq and Rebel, actual journalistic groups, appeared to miss the importance of the story.

Ah, that update wasn't there before. That makes much more sense. I really don't get Microsoft's strategy here, and it seems to me that third-party publishers would want to distance themselves from DRM practices on consoles.

Especially when you consider that EA has stopped with the Online Pass bullshit and also Ubi has started moving away from DRM for their titles as well.  Publishers are slowly starting to realize that DRM is bad, so Microsoft heralding shit that even EA and Ubi have dropped is nothing short of full retard.

Sony's not allowing Online Passes on the PS4 since online MP is tied to PS+ on PS4. They can do things beyond that, but there's not much reason to do that unless publishers want to out themselves like that.

I despise the playstation controller. That will always keep me away from the PS4.

Like I said, I'm probably going to go steambox + 360 controller.

I feel the same about the Xbox controller.  I've tried many times to get used to it, but PS controllers feel so much better to me.

Sold off 99% of my 360 collection, bought a year of PS+, full Last of Us reserve and have money left over for PS4.

Fuck you, MS and your shitty new drm policy. I'm voting with my wallet. Even if it doesn't make any difference, I like to stand by my principles.

What did you keep?

---

I made a list of the games I have and I was surprised how small it was. I borrow games from my brothers so that helps a lot.

PS3
The ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection (need to finish SotC)
3D Dot Game Heroes (currently playing, almost done)

Xbox 360
Madden 13 (still play)
UFC 3 (still play)
Saints Row the Third: Full Package (playing co-op with brother)
Skyrim (done but brother playing it)

Hitman Blood Money (probably going on ebay soon)

DJ Hero (the music games are just there but people play them ocasionally)
Guitar Hero 3
Def Jam Rapster

Also got some digital games. A handful of PSN+ games and for xbox I got Left for Dead 2 and Alan Wake.

Stolen from SD and posted here in case stinkin still lurks. 21 bucks for the complete series of fringe on bd after tax and shipping is pretty good. Never watched the show, but at that price I figured it was worth snagging.

I still have all of my 8-) games, but I don't think I'll be popping those in any time soon.  I also let my Gold subscription end.  Tempted to toss my 360 out my window.

I kept some 360 games that I foresee turning collectable, though.
