Back in the 90's, I would go to the Arcade with a fist full of quarters and play Tekken along with many other games. It would cost 50 cents for one play and if you win, you keep playing and if you lose you would have to deposit another 50 cents. Nowadays, Arcades are few and far between and some of the few that are left have opted for an admission model with the games on free play.
Tekken Revolution is a "free to play" and free to downloadable game for the Playstation 3. You get a maximum of 5 free credits to play against other players called "battle coins" and you 2 free credits to play the arcade mode called "arcade coins. These credits do refresh on a timer and you get a free "battle coin" every 30 minutes and a free "arcade coin" every hour.
When you run out of free plays, you can buy more credits in the form of "premium coins." They come in three different packs of 4 for 99 cents, 10 for $1.99 or 30 for $4.99. Which turns out to bet a credit for a quarter, 20 cents and 16.6 cents. If you win with a "premium coin," you win a "premium ticket" which lets you keep on playing. Not that bad if you ask me, plus you can get away with only using your free credits if you are just looking for a quick game session here and there.
As reproducing the feel of the classic arcade model, I think they did a pretty good job. To me there is just something different when there's money on the line as opposed to playing on "free play." You win, you keep playing and if you lose you go home. It's that kind of thing that made me really enjoy playing fighting games in the arcade and I was pleasantly surprised how well the "free to play" model lends itself to the fighting genre.
The biggest complaint people have had is that it feels like a watered down Tekken and to a certain extent that is true. Eight characters are available from the beginning and there are an additional six unlockable characters. That's fourteen playable characters total, two of which were added quite recently. The core mechanics are there, but I think it feels more like a test of sorts.
Namco wanted to try the free-to-play model with Tekken Revolution, but they really didn't go all in with all of the characters and stages from the get go. I think it works and there have been 1 million people who have downloaded it in less than a month that it has been released. They have started to release more characters, so I think it is only a matter of time before they keep releasing more. I'm very interested to see how they expand on the game in the coming months and thus far I'm having a blast!
If you have a Playstation 3 and if you enjoy fighting games, then there really is no reason not to give Tekken Revolution a try. It's free to download, it's free to play and you only have to pay if you want to play longer than the 7 credits they give you at the start of each session.
