These are on clearance at gamestop.

This is basically a back-up battery, right?

I've noticed a lot of places are clearancing out Vita accessories.  My guess is a packaging change or just trying to eliminate excess stock.

Unfortunately, I was late to the party in the other thread and no GS had them within a reasonable driving distance. I had picked this up at Amazon a couple weeks ago at the same price.

Yes and no. It's mainly a charger vs. just a pure back up like typical batteries. You plug it into your Vita and it will charge the Vita battery.
