ps3-12gb-555x312.jpg

Currently a rumor but some are having luck finding them inside Target locations.

Update:

Engadget has proof of stock showing up in Kmart.

Lol 12GB? Even if you only brought disc games, patches and DLC would fill that shit almost instantly.

My 500GB still feels too small...

That's awful, I hope it's a misprint and they're missing a zero. My Wii U has a massive hard drive compared to that.

Yea it is to compete with the crappy 4gb Xbox

Which only sells in America basically because of the price tag.

This is sony's chance to take the casual market of uninformed consumers who buy products just on price alone

The only problem is that Sony has mandatory installs for a ton of games which I believe is because of their crappy blu-ray reader. That would shit the 12GB incredibly fast.

you can sill upgrade the HDD
Yeah but compared to the other bundles that have hit $200 or close to it. Why would you go through the trouble to upgrade the HDD? Hell why wouldnt you just grab the GTA5 bundle for $270? You get an upgrade and GTA5 for another $70.

Honestly, I wouldnt be surprised if this was a 120GB for $200

just delete and reinstall, yes it sucks, but for the "casual" gamer, they wont have more than a couple games in their library. keep in mind our comments our biased we are cags, we probably have at least a hundred games lol.

It's amazing that it's successful because I imagine some games would be unplayable on this model because they need several gb for game data alone like Gran Turismo 5.

or ppl who buys a ps3 primarily for blu ray and plays very little game or have very little storage need other than save files.  Plus, even the largest hdd Sony offer is not enough for many and they upgrade immediately with a 500gb they need to find a use for. why not get this and upgrade immediately.

Hell i got the 250 GB Super slim with Uncharted 1 and 2 and infamous Collection for $200 on black Friday.
every day isnt black friday

cant believe people are complaining about this (wait yes I can)

It's obv to compete against the 360 system as stated and good for people who need to buy another ps3 because their old ones crapped out on them or something. Someone with a external hard drive already mostly.

not for the masses

Some people buy ps3s just for media purposes/bluray. Good deal for them.

With the deals for a PS3 lately you might as well just wait for those. How many times have we seen a 250gb or 500gb PS3 in the 220-230 range lately?

But I guess it fits a really specific market

This may be a dumb question but can you use USB drives on it as storage? Like could I slap on a 32GB flash drive and still download games and do installs, use Playstation Plus? Or does it have to be an external USB HDD?

12GB? Considering I can get a 120GB+ PS3 with two controllers for less than $180 easy, I won't pay more than $120 for this new PS3 if it had this SKU, especially when they keep advertising 500GBs at the MSRP nearing Black Friday.

Also, this bodes well for Nintendo. I think everyone thought Sony/MS would hurt the Wii U by dropping prices down to $150ish range but I think people will largely ignore this 12GB PS3 for the most part and still go for the $270 main model.

Not really complaints. The price is just a bit high for what it is. The 4GB 360s are going for around $180 now from Target.

well for $20 more you get a bluray player, 8 more gigs(lol) access to netflix without paying online subscription. seems fair

Isn't the 12 GB a SSD rather than a HDD? If it were the same model EU had I mean. So essentially it is better than the 360 4GB model since that is only flash memory.

I'm glad it's like this, and don't really care about space.

Not gonna buy a lot of games if I had this and I'll just delete space if it fills up by patches.

Hope I can get one used for $100 or below now.

Crappy blu-ray player? The PS3 has been one of the best Blu-ray players on the market for several years. Besides what other current gen consoles play blu-rays?

If a household is just entering the home entertainment market or just bought a HD TV for the first time and wants to get into blu-rays this is the best AIO deal that they can get. As far as value goes it'll blow the 4GB Xbox out of the market (unless you're attached to MS games) and with a base price of $199.99 we should see incentive laced deals to get it for $149.99-$179.99 frequently like we do with the 4GB Xbox 360.

This seems like an odd move given how much space game installs can take up but this probably isn't aimed towards the knowledgeable gamer, either. I'm guessing this uses some type of built in memory (I doubt they'd use a HDD for 12GB, right? Do they even make them that small?) and will probably sell some bundle with an installable HDD (possibly pre-loaded with some games) and a PSN+ card.

You can't be serious, right? This thing offers 3X the storage space, a blu-ray drive/3D blu-ray movies also, and free "access" to many media apps. I think it makes a great replacement or entry level device to get people to go have a look at it in the stores. MSRP is $199.99 but it doesn't mean retailers won't drop the price later on.

This product isn't targeted at us but the mainstream consumers. It provides a decent amount of multimedia features, a huge library of games, and an okay price. The storage space is enough for small games like Journey on the PS Store which is what they will most likely enjoy and pay a few bucks for. If games was a priority, they would had bought the machine already sometime in the past 7 years...

The AC3 bundle has been $230 for a 500GB and AC3.

I understand people dont use/need the space, but I try to get more bang for my buck.

If it is truly a 12GB PS3, then it should be like $120. Sony should be trying to get the consoles in everyones home.

As others have pointed out most people outside sites like CAG aren't hardcore gamers and don't have a huge collection of games.

For someone that wants a blu-ray player / media streamer with apps and wants to play the occasional madden/COD/AAA games that they can rent from Red Box this is the best deal going for them.

Combine that with the fact that MSRP is $199.99 and it will most definitely go on sale from time to time it is a very good value for people that aren't the most informed when it comes to gaming.

Edit: and I hope people understand it's borderline moronic to compare the base price (i.e. MSRP) of a system that is just launching to the lowest price a particular bundle has ever been.

I mean seriously... those 500GB PS3 consoles are NOT fuck ING $230. They are $269.99 and just had a drop from $299.99.

If you are going to compare the lowest price they have ever been then you might as well compare them to this bundle at what it could be (ex. $150).

Not anymore they don't.

It would have to either be flash memory or an SSD at this period of time in technology. If it is just like the EU model, it should be SSD. Which makes far more sense because of the install requirement for most games. This also means any memory recalled from the SSD (textures and stuff) should load quicker than those that have the game installed on a HDD.

Also, it would be a smart move to buy this model, then throw in a HDD down the road to maximize your memory allotment. (Kinda like the 360 4GB bundle. Get a 500 GB HDD and you essentially have 504 GB of memory.)

Doesn't work like that. Once you install a HDD the 12GB is gone.

Where are new ps3 500gb bundles selling for $230?
Thru Newegg on Ebay they have been 230-240 a couple time in the last few months. Amazon had the GOW Ascension and the Uncharted 3 on sale as did the Best Buy

I know its a deal when it happens, so comparing the lowest price may not be the best, but again just compare it to the GTA5 bundle then that launches at 270. For $70, you get 488GB more in space and GTA 5

He said "crappy Blu-ray reader" not "player." Meaning the actual Blu-ray drive inside, and not the system as a whole.

Could this really be considered a deal? Considering most are saying that this is more for people who really don't care a lot about games and just want it for blu-ray/netflix?

Could you point out a better current gen blu-ray reader... in a gaming console? People complain about PS3 load times and attribute it to the reader but what the heck are you comparing it to? The DVD drive in the Wii/360/Wii U?

I never understood that. I don't like the wait times, load times, etc. but I have nothing else to compare it to

I posted this to give people a heads up that a cheaper PS3 might come next week. It is up to them to decide if this is what they want. Some CAGs may just not want to wait for a deal but just want a PS3 at a reasonable price right now. I have seen this asked in the "request deal/advice" forum of CAG many times when a PS3 deal just doesn't come up or they need a replacement immediately at the store.

I think people are talking about the fact that the PS3 uses a fairly slow BD drive (2x read speed) while most BD players these days use much faster drives. For movies, it's not a huge issue but for games, it leads to longer load times, texture pop-ins, etc which developers try to alleviate with mandatory installs, lower resolution textures, etc.

The PS4 will use a 6x BD drive, which will likely reduce (if not eliminate) those problems.

For the time being. If devs decide to go full on 1080p all the time, it may pose a problem in the future. (Being too slow)

There are also people who have extra HDD laying around and have no need for another one.
Like me. If I can pick one of these up in the $100-150 range, I have a 320GB laptop hard drive laying around that I could format and throw in it.

Thing is, it takes not even 5 minutes to replace a hard drive so why not? i have a 40gb fat ps3 that just died. I put my own 750gb hdd in a while ago. If this 12gb ps3 were around 150 or less, id be all over it.

The only thing to watch out for is that you have to buy the mounting bracket to use a HDD, which is another $10-15.
