How to keep Verizon unlimited data?

dcm1602

CAGiversary!
No idea if this is the right place for such a thread, but I have a grandfathered unlimited Verizion Wireless data plan, and I REALLY need to upgrade my phone ( I have the original droid)

Im wanting to get the new note 3 without spending 900$ buying it outright, is there a way to upgrade my phone for the 2 year contract price, and keep my unlimited Data?

Ive been having a hard time finding out how

Thanks !

I'm in the same boat.  My Droid 3 is so slow that sometimes it'll ring, and take forever to allow me to pick up the call, that by the time the screen has appeared and the swipe has gone through, the person has already gone to voicemail...

I walked right into the Verizon store and asked the guy what I was supposed to do.  I'm faced with two problems:

I was grandfathered into Unlimited Data, and don't want to lose it.

I need a new Android with a physical keyboard.  I can't stand these touch screen keyboards that take up 75% off your screen just to type.

The guy told me I was out of luck with the keyboard issue, but in order to save my Unlimited Data, I had to either buy the new phone outright or (and I'm pretty sure this is what he said, but) I can make it so that I had more than one phone on my plan, add the new phone to it, and then cancel back to a one-phone plan and remove the old one.

Buying a new phone outright seemed more tempting to me, since I didn't want to get stuck with all the preinstalled crap that I can't remove and has been running in the background, slowing my phone down, like that stupid Slacker app and such, but I didn't realize either that prices would be hundreds and hundreds of dollars to buy a phone outright.  So I don't really remember the specifics at this "two phone" method.  I'd just go into the Verizon store and ask one of the guys there what you have to do.

Is the Note 3 out?
Today was its announcing conference and all that crap

Releases September 25th

and as to the above, I THINK what the guy was saying is you add a line to your family plan with a new smart phone you want, then cancel the smart phone so its a "normal" phone

but then youre paying 10$ a month extra for an extra line for 2 years (an extra 240$~)

You may be able to get onto this - http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/26/4661358/verizon-max-data-plans-dirt-cheap-only-available-to-edge-customers

I think you would save money in the long run by buying the phone outright.
How would I save money by paying 800-900$ for a 250-300$ phone ?

And I would have to downgrade from my current data plan (30$ a month for unlimited data) to 30$ a month for 6gb/month

Those programs rip people off hardcore who want to upgrade their phone every 6 months to a year

Welcome to the wireless world. You either get on a limited data plan or pay full price of phone, end of story. Wait a few months and the price will fall. I was just offering the only other alternative for you - 6gb for approx the same price as you are paying now.

I can indeed confirm that the 2nd phone on the plan method works.

It obviously works best if there is a phone on the plan already WITHOUT unlimited data. The employee simply upgrades the line that doesn't have unlimited data on it, then moves the new phone onto your line.

Another option if there is no other line on your plan already is to create a line, spend the 300$ on the phone, cancel the line for what I believe is another 350$, and then 10$ a month for 2 years for another $240. In the end spending 890$ and a huge headache.

The last option is buying it out right, for 900$.

Though there is one more option, never tested it so YMMV on everything from legality to it actually working, but bare with me on my thinking. Any time, I think any time at least, existing plans can be moved from one account onto another and on an account to their own account without affecting the plan itself. So potentially this could mean that you could move someone onto your account or you could move onto someone's account and upgrade their line with your upgrade and just simply move the phone back onto your line. Then potentially separate the accounts again.

The problem with that last one is, like I said, I've never tested it nor looked to far into it. So problems you could run in to is there actually is a waiting time to move accounts around like that. As in I know you can basically go on and off a family plan, I just don't know if you can do them in quick successions. A family plan is generally cheaper anyways, but you need someone willing to jump on that ship as well. Remember, family plan doesn't have to be family members. I'm pretty sure it doesn't put any restrictions on either line, such as upgrade eligibility, but again I don't know.

IF you do decide to try the very last option, I'm unsure if it should be announced to the world or not. I have a feeling Verizon would find a way to squash the whole thing from working if it does heh.

Any update on this?  Had a blackberry with unlimited data a few years ago.  When I got my Droid X2 from Verizon a couple years ago they told me I was grandfathered in with my unlimited data plan but they didn't know for how long since they knew the new data plans were coming out.  When we upgraded my wife's phone last year I was informed that if/when I upgrade my phone, I would not longer be grandfathered in to unlimited data.

Just curious as to if you found any other options or workarounds than those mentioned already.

No workaround exists. If you "upgrade" with a vzw subsidized phone, you'll lose unlimited (there have been website glitches, but don't count on it). Your only option is to buy a phone at full price, away from Verizon, and activate it on your line. Just buy a phone that's a generation old, it'll be a lot cheaper. If you have to have the latest and greatest, you're out of luck.

Had to upgrade.  Much cheaper just to buy a phone on the plan and lost the unlimited data that it was to buy a phone full price.  So, lost my unlimited data, but silver lining is that Verizon had a special offer where I got the 6gb data plan for the price of the 2gb price.
