I will be a bit sad if Diablo 3 is down to $15 by Black Friday since I already paid $45 for the 360 version from Toys R Us. But I want to get it out of the way before the PS4 comes out in a couple of months.

The Xbox One version still hasn't been announced, so some sort of timed next-gen exclusivity seems likely.

What a surprise to have a new CagCast this morning after such a long absence. Good to have you guys back!

You guys talking about the Penny Arcade Dickwolves stuff, that issue has so many nooks and crannies, it's almost impossible to really explore all of the things wrong with it!

Comedy is one of my favorite things in the world. I've always loved stand up and offensive comedy doesn't get to me, but I do recognize that certain things are going to offend people.

On one hand, joking about any certain topic is up to you. How people react to said topic is not up to you. While the original comic doesn't come right out and say anything against rape survivors, I see how it could be interpreted by someone as being completely insensitive to those people and irresponsible.

While I understand their right to defend their freedom to post what they want, I don't really understand PA's reason for replying insensitively to the ones offended. And to make a t shirt when you know it's been a huge issue, to me that just sounds like media bait and created-controversy for personal gain.

Then their fans go even further with it as to send death threats and such to these people? Some people already don't think for themselves, so they are told that PA having the right to do what they want, regardless of how it's looked at, is more important than making sure people around you are comfortable. So, I suspect they're scared that their figurehead might be held accountable for something he said, therefore making him fallible?

The whole thing is mind bogglingly stupid. I just hope PA learns someday that there are a lot of people out there who blindly follow and don't think for themselves, and act upon whatever a figurehead, role model or popular person might say. So, it might be a good idea to not trivialize or media boost certain topics in the future.

Mighty No. 9 can't get shut down by Capcom. I mean Rock Band was made and that is Guitar Hero, but with more stuff.

Cheapy, I know what you mean about certain aspects of Japanese lifestyle that are tough; I lived there for a year back in college. Still, being a foreigner in Japan gives life a quality that I enjoy. Plus, the U.S. is bad for your health. I live and work in Chicago right now, but my dream is to join you at the Tokyo America Club in the near future.

 
What?!  I didn't approve of CheapyD gallivanting around in fancy cars!  You can take your GameFly affiliate links and keep posting them for me because I'm hopelessly addicted to stockpiling PS3 games on the cheap.

The new Skylanders genre doesn't resonate with me at all.  I was racking my head trying to figure out what license would get my attention, and then Cheapy beat me to it.  Hot Wheels would be my fucking jam.

Great to have everyone back, but that Disney Infinity discussion was way too long. If Wombat is allowed to talk that long, Shipwreck is allowed to talk more about the Vita.

 
The PA people tend to approach every situation as if they're crusaders trying to push their views on the world. They did the same thing with telling people that used games are the same as stealing; they didn't want a discussion about the merits of a used game ecosystem, they wanted to tell everyone who disagreed that they were wrong and basically criminals. It's the same thing with dickwolves. Instead of saying that they understood people who were offended, they felt that they needed to go on a crusade to make sure that rape victims don't take anyone's free speech away.

I agree that it makes them "elitist nerds," that's a great term for it.

Edit: I also want to say that the games industry is already plagued by extreme misogyny. Penny Arcade is in a position where they have the ability to influence the gamer hivemind in a positive way. Instead of doing that, they decided to double-down on protecting their own rights to free speech regardless of who might get hurt. They really set a terrible example.

Cheapy, if you like Chronicles of Mystara, you should try out Dragon's Crown.  Four player co op offline and online, though online only once you get through around five to 10 hours in.  

 
 Penny-Arcade is entertaining.  But it never felt like Child's Play and PAX mixed well with penis cookies, occasional graphical violence and frequent obscenities.    IT was sort of like a Mom heading the PTA while doing some porn on the side.  

You can kinda see how it is all going to end badly.

For me it would be Marvel characters. I can see a 3rd person action adventure Marvel game where you plug in new heroes/villains by buying figures. And I can totally see this happening since Marvel is owned by Disney. Same with Star Wars, but I see that being harder to make a compelling game with swappable characters.

 
Like the hosts, I also see where both sides have their points.  However, I think both sides have lost perspective here.

First of all, the original comic was not a rape joke.  It was a joke about arbitrary goals in video games.  The quest only required the hero to rescue five slaves, and he's indifferent to the plight of a sixth one when he begs to be rescued.  The comic references rape, but the joke isn't about rape.  Gabe and Tycho could have chosen to stand by the comic on this ground, and I would have no problem.

What I have a problem with, however, is how they chose to respond to the criticism of the comic in the most abrasive way possible.  Why would you make merch of dick wolves?  That seems laser-targeted at rape victims.  It's as if they went out of their way to deliver the moral high ground to their detractors on a silver platter.

On the other hand, I also take issue with the other side which says that you can't make a joke about rape under any context.  So let me get this straight.  I can make jokes about murder, cancer, diabetes, dead babies, nuclear holocausts, gun violence, and people who kill themselves in stupid ways, but I can't under any circumstance tell a joke that even so much as references rape?  REALLY?!?

Some of us have a healthy perspective on dark humor and don't take this stuff so personally.  I think we all need to just sit down and watch Spring Time For Hitler and get back to a time when we weren't so afraid of being offended and offending other people.

And finally, I'm sorry.  Since WHEN is Jim Sterling a bastion of virtue who cares about people's feelings???  Isn't this the same Jim Sterling who made a 9/11 joke on or around Podtoid #100?  Jim Sterling told two bad jokes in a row and then compared it to airplanes crashing into buildings one after another. And then he spent the rest of the episode explaining why the joke wasn't offensive.  Ask Topher Cantler about that joke if you don't believe me.

Great show!  Nice to hear Wombat so passionate about Disney Infinity.  I can't remember him being so into a game since Oblivion.  I don't care if it's Disney talk, more of that wombat please!

It might smell like pee because Japan by comparison is kept so clean. When i visited Japan we saw people out cleaning their streets every morning. I liked that.

Regarding Megaman and copyright. You have to protect Trademarks or lose them, you don't have to protect copyright. And unless they call it megaman it would probably be hard to argue trademark infringement.

On the whole PA thing you seem to project a lot of motives on those guys. But I do agree with the idea that they seem to be too busy asserting their "rights" to do things instead of thinking if they should do it.

And as someone else mentioned, the entire joke wasn't really about rape in the first place. But I'm pretty sure that shirts about not freeing the 9th slave would have generated an even bigger shit storm.

In the end they said that wished they would have said was to not engage in those stories. Which honestly does seem like a missed opportunity for them to change the culture for the better.
 
Damn, you guys sure are buzz kils when it comes to GTA V. I can't freaking wait for the game to be released, and you guys really sound like you couldn't care less it's coming out. Cheapy saying he'll wait for the PC version sounds like lunacy to me. Love the show guys, hope we can still expect a fair assessment about the game as all of you should really be playing the biggest game release of this generation.

 
While I am of the opinion that the initial Penny Arcade webcomic referencing Dickwolves was not trying to be intentionally insensitive to rape victims; it was used as slang. Jerry and Mike's response to their critics was callous. They decided to create "Dickwolves" jerseys and monetize on the whole ordeal. Seemingly becoming "pro-rape" and saying fuck you to anyone who was offended by the webcomic. They later then pulled the jerseys to their own chagrin.

At this year's PAX Prime during their panel, Mike decides to open an old wound and state that he regretted pulling the "Dickwolves" merchandise. Why go there? Why did they actually regret pulling the merchandise? Was it because they lost potential revenue or because they were mad that they caved in to their critics or both. Either way for these two guys who pride themselves on being the guardians of the Internet to be in this manner the complete antithesis, is very telling. The adage "Do as I say not as I do" comes to mind. A pessimistic me would say all their articles and webcomic scrutinizing the "evils" of the gaming world aren't genuine responses but a farce. They want to have a stigmata of being heroes of the Internet. But when the ball is in their court, they don't learn from a mistake or bring closure to a misunderstanding, they become the very trolls the speak out against, Sadly becoming self-righteous, greedy, hypocrites.

The writing has been on the wall that these guys are "Dickwolves" is sheep's clothing from two unwarrented Kickstarters, to transphobic remarks, to regurgitating the wrongs of 2010 tasteless merchandising scheme.

I thought Diablo was going to be PS4 exclusive. I bought it for X360 based on that info. Not disappointed though. It's good. Graphics not as good as PC but looks good to me. Played very little on PC but X360 graphics don't look pixelated to me. PC graphics were sharper from what I remember from memory.

re: The World's End - if you loved 90's Brit pop, there is a lot of referential humor to the lyrics of those songs.  Check out the OST and then see the movie.  I was laughing out loud when some of the "inspirational speeches" were merely passionate reciting of lyrics by the "Soup Dragons" or "Primal Scream."

For those who haven't seen it yet, avoid trailers!  Just see it.  You'll like it.

And Cheapy...you paid $10-$15 for Game Dev Story? That game was great, but I want to let you know that you can't comment about how ridiculous it is to pay higher on consoles for IOS/Android games...when you literally just did it with PC. Because isn't it only $.99 or $1.99 on phones?

Re-listen to the New Releases section. For every title Cheapy has to make a comment about PC. It won't look as good as the PC version. Is that coming out for PC? PC, PC, PC. We get it. You own a PC. It's your preferred platform. Just remember most people don't have a gaming PC. It's a niche audience. Most of your listeners game on a console and it gets tiring to listen to harp on the PC constantly. Shipwreck also has a gaming PC, but he doesn't beat us over the head with it.
 
UHH Game Dev Story is iOS and Android only. I think Cheapy mistook Game Dev Tycoon for it. Which is totally fine, they have very similar concepts.

Cheapy hit the nail on the head. The toys actually need to be toys, not just little figurines.

Even though it's called Swap Force, the new Skylanders game isn't all swappable characters. They're a sub-group, just like Giants were in the last game. They've already shown some new non-swappable Skylanders that will be coming out.
 
I've only just started to listen as I post this, but I have to say this: grape is not the worst candy flavor by far. It is proven fact that watermelon is the worst flavor for anything that isn't an actual watermelon. Candy, juices, etc. Doesn't matter what it is - if watermelon is an available flavor, it is guaranteed to be the worst. This has yet to be proven false on anything I've ever had that has a watermelon flavor.

Wombat is right, grape is the bomb, in a multipack of frozen fruit popsicles that is my 2nd or 3rd favorite from the box. Purplesaurus Rex Kool-aid was also my favorite flavor by far.

Question for Wombat and Shipwreck. Does player 2 earn any achievements in Disney Infinity? That omission's one of the things that annoys me about Skylanders.

 
Ahhh, Wombat, yawn your way through indie game discussions, the one area of the industry that shows creativity & originality, and yet drone on about a children's game who's design focus is bleeding parent's wallets dry. I love ya Baby, but it's despite your tastes rather than because of it ;-)

When I saw all the Disney Infinity and Skylanders toys at Best Buy I couldn't help but think of the collapse of the plastic instrument craze.  

 
Just got home from the store and I realized that your podcast made me subliminally choose watermelon handsoap and watermelon sour patch candy because of your positive mention of watermelon candies as opposed to the disgusting lemon and grape. The soap smells pretty awesome so I consider it a win. Although I did also buy grape/rasberry juice. So I guess this means your positive mentions had more of an effect than your negative ones.
