To me a game needs two things to be a game.

1. A goal

2. A conflict

All games have this.
I disagree. If your are talking about video games, I would say a video game is just something you control and interact
with. A game does not need any type of bad guy to kill or money to be made, you just need to move the media along with your actions. I know, I know, very progressive.

Tanks for the fresh cagcast crew!  The pool is closed but I'm still listening.

Show feedback: You guys were talking over each other a lot of the time especially in the final 20 minutes of this show.  It's jarring.  Cheers.

@Shipwreck: Any chance you and the Mrs. will be making the trek up to Columbus for this cultural experience?

Please stop generalizing GAF. There are thousands of members and posts everyday. I post and read it everyday. I love it there and helps me pass the time while I'm at work. It's a great forum full of industry professionals and enthusiasts. I've become very cool with a lot of people there just like I've become cool with you guys on CAG. Like I said before, there will and always be dumb posts in every large forum. I've blocked people on both CAG and GAF for being idiots. It happens all the time.

CAG and GAF are two of my most favorite places to visit everyday. It sucks that you guys hate GAF so much that you think mainly children post there. I don't agree with that at all.

Do you have a better explanation of why you don't think streaming to android or steam consoles won't work well?
I believe it's a matter of available bandwidth in your network. If there are other wifi networks in the area, they can interfere with each other. This problem occurs in my apartment with the Shield.

I don't hate GAF.

Wombat clearly doesn't hate GAF as he is on there all the time.

Shipwreck, who can get a read on that guy, he's like wallpaper.

Keep in mind that we are old so our definition of children may be different than yours. ;)

The Master System with the light gun was on closeout in Sears in '90, make of that what you will.

Agents of Shield Ep3 got so thick with the stupid that I had to turn off and switch to Brooklyn 99 halfway through.

A Steam streaming box could potentially come with an Ethernet port. But that wouldn't solve the wireless (more convenient) problem though.

Things like MiraCast [ youtube v=b52zqNIeQso ] and WiDi [ youtube v=mnP0d0UbLGo ] use different frequencies/protocols (I could be wrong) just to prevent that problem, but even those suffer with similar wireless streaming problems (from my personal experiences).

I need to put you guys in my next comic.  Of course everyone will have a southern slang and open beer cans with your nose.  Just like real life.

I think you'd get more hits than PVP these days with Mr. No Penis.

A "game" game has to have significant player interaction. If you don't like the term interactive movie, there is also the, probably more appropriate for long-form storytelling, term "visual novel." To the Moon, 999, Zero Escape, etc. would fall more into that category. The "game" is merely used as a delivery system to tell a rich story and token bits of gameplay are thrown in to justify its status as a "game."

Nostalgia blast, my parents bought us the NES with Mario + duckhunt + the original gray light gun before they went PC crazy and colored it red. But we did rent a SNES from time to time, first game I played for that was Super Castlevania 4, I remember the sound quality and music being "the best that it could ever be."

I followed your democracy example Wombat, if enough people vote contrary to fact, then in the eyes of the republic an untruth is a truth. That's what Stephen Colbert makes fun of so much with "truthiness" (when one person knows something is true because it FEELS true, even if it isn't objectively true) and "wikiality" (reality decided by majority rule) and "not intended to be a factual statement."

They partially address why Coulson picks all young recruits in the second episode of shield, though I agree the show is pretty rough right now, I am hoping it is just because it is knee deep in the "case of the week" phase 1 that most mythology-based series go through and not that they don't have an overall vision for the show.

"Allow them" doesn't necessarily mean you have to Opt in to kinect based marketing, I would interpret that just to mean that one has the option to turn it off.

I agree with Cheapy, they are probably saving the 1 TB drives for the first hardware revision. Cheapy probably also has an easier time dealing with the 60 GB PS3 HD because he has blazing fast Japan internet and can easily re-download anything he has to delete if in the future he wanted to replay it.

Borderlands 2 did something similar with its season pass, though not on the same scale as Injustice, it only covered some of the released items. Season pass used to mean getting all the DLC, but game companies found a way to ruin that as well.

Can you give an example of a game that doesn't have conflict? Just wondering.

I would like to contribute to a Dollar Slots kickstarter. In exchange for $25 and a broken ColecoVision controller, I expect 1 year of ad free access to the comic as well as a hoodie featuring the anti-Semitic owl. However, I suggest that the owl be changed to "Hooters", the owl that sexually harasses it's coworkers.

A camera that's in your pocket is a lot less worrisome than one that's pointed at your couch.  But the worst part of Kinect is that it has increased the cost and reduced the power of the Xbox One for very little benefit.

My favorite random/funny GTA V moment:

On the mission where you need to acquire a fire truck, I flip out my phone and call 911. While I'm waiting, I hear the fire truck siren in the distance but it takes several minutes for it to arrive. When it finally pulls up, the front window is broken out and the fireman in the passenger seat is slumped over.

I jump in and drive it to the necessary spot but I park to close to a wall so my character has to exit through the passenger side. He casually opens the door, pushes the dead fireman to the ground and gets out. MISSION PASSED

To answer Wombat's comment about Ming Na's parents owning a restaurant, Chinatown Inn is still there, although I have no idea how good it is these days.  I seem to recall her brother runs it now or something.

Hell (and the internet) is for children.

-Pat Benetar

I often wonder why much credence is given to random negative comments on the internet. 90% are probably from people under 17, 99% of whom are convinced they have the world totally figured out. It's silly that all public posting places (forums, twitter, comments) don't have better means to crowdsource the post blocking. If I could, I'd block posts from anyone under 25. That's right, I'm a geezer.

@Lik That's great that you have time to waste on GAF during work. Once you get busy with work/family/etc, you'll probably see wading through the huge amount of junk there to be a less effective use of your spare time.

And to make this post longer: great Cagcast super kung-fu action! Keep it up!

That Dollar Slots idea is so absurd it sounds like something Jim Sterling would scheme up.  I'm surprised it didn't end with Jonathan Holmes in a mesh tanktop.

On the discussion about the Injustice GOTY edition or whatever it's called, I agree with Wombat, that they should reward those that jumped in early for the game. The system seems backwards.

But on the otherhand, if we all just said "I'll wait till GOTY edition..." Would we even get the GOTY edition? If the sales out of the gate are poop, or the skin sales are poop I can't imagine them releasing another version later down the road.

Cheapy,

That comic thing was an absolutley HORRID idea.  Probably the dumbest thing I have ever hear on the podcast.

Wombat did make the right suggestions to improve it, but seriously you aren't going to do anything to improve the CAG name or improve the community with it.

You aren't doing anything to improve the situation, unite gamers, or reduce hate, just let it go.

It is good to hear you guys are definitely don't agree with what the Penny Arcade guys have done/ are doing, but that is all you need to do.

If you want to make a comic go for it, but that topic is just bad.

On the topic of the Injustice UE, the season pass was only $14.99 which is essentially buy 3 get 1 free on the characters and you get the Flashpoint 1 costume pack for free. An altogether savings of $8 is good enough for a season pass and it seems kind of dumb to complain about the lack of skins or content in it when your savings are equal to a little over half of the asking price. It was certainly better than anything that Capcom has done with their fighting game DLC (Jesus, UMvC3 skins are expensive). Given that it was actually a good deal it seems like Wombat's main complaint is that it either didn't cost more and include all of the characters and costumes (they do cost more money to make since different textures can be expensive) or that he just didn't like that they called it a season pass. If his problem is with the term "season pass," then what else should they call it? That season of character content did end and your pass was only for the characters released during that season, so it makes a lot of sense to call it a season pass to me. It's essentially the same as buying a season pass to a tv show on iTunes. You don't get everything associated with The Walking Dead tv show (Talking Dead, soundtrack, apps, games) released by buying the fourth season's pass and once that season ends you won't be getting any new content without paying for it. Does that kind of thing bother you too?

To me, Wombat is NeoGAF pretty much. Nice on the Genesis at launch tho.

Anybody know what the song that opens the show is?

The problem with pc game streaming is responsiveness.   Latency.   Wifi has too much latency for streaming pc games to another screen.

Then you have all the headaches associated with all the various wifi configs out there and all the various environments those configs are in that are only going to mean that most people are going to have further latency issues  not to mention compatibility problems (as if pc gaming doesn't already have enough of those problems.)

The best streaming gaming device on the market is the Wii U & GamePad in my experience.  And it uses a custom version of WiFi Direct.  NIntendo and the Broadcom engineers worked together (according to a previous Iwata Asks) to get rid of much of unnecessary overhead in WiFi Direct in order to cut down the latency as much as possible.   And the result is your Wii U Gamepad is as responsive as your tv as long as it is in the same room.

That is what would need to happen to make pcgame streaming work like it should.

Cheapie right about these retarded network shows where everyone in every position is too well groomed and too young and too model-ee and milk-toasty or too pc-ee or generic-ee.   I can't watch a network show except for a comedy or two.

Wombat right about the comic strip ideas.  Pretty bad.  The 2 ideas sounded pretty much how Penny Arcade comic strip works.  Take something that happened and then have some fantastical ending.  So you wouldn't be satirizing the strip so much as cloning it.

I say do the CaGCast.   An Android dongle like the ChromeCast but for gaming.  (Not sure what "for gaming" means, but it sounded like it made sense.)

I like Cheapy's comic ideas!  I think Wombat's suggestions are more traditionally "funny", but there's something to be said for WTF moments.  It's OK to be outside the box.

What would be funny, is Cheapy to write a comic strip and have it drawn up, then given to Wombat to make "funnier" and publish both and have people vote.

Lastly, that Colecovision kickstarter is a joke.  Everyone by now knows that classic gaming on iOS is ass.  These games just don't work with touchscreen controls - ask anyone who downloaded Atari's Greatest Hits or Activision Anthology.

Enjoyable show this week!

Steam controller demo for the hosts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeAjkbNq4xI&feature=player_embedded

Great show! Cheapy, I really liked your comic ideas.

And to answer your questions about Plants Vs Zombies 2, you don't HAVE to buy anything. It just speeds up the game.

I am on the last of the 3 "worlds" now and have almost all of the plants unlocked, having bought nothing.

I did hit a difficulty wall earlier, and stopped playing... if you don't play for a day (it seems) they throw a Treasure Yeti at you as a stimulus to get back in. That actually helped me get the extra keys and stars to move on.

That said, I'd rather have paid for the game, as I did the first, and not have to work so hard at getting so many stars to open future levels.

I'm only half-way through the episode and I've already agreed with Cheapy twice. This is unprecedented!

I do think that Agents of SHIELD is bad. It seems like an expensive show that's built to be as broad as possible which will ultimately hurt it. I think Terra Nova had similar issues.

I also think he's right that GameStop could be on the list for the next Android console announcement. They've been buying and selling mobile devices for awhile now. They're publishing Kongregate games on Android. One of the biggest problems facing these things, apart from the fundamental issue that I think we all see, is getting them into retail channels and marketing them. GameStop has a lot of stores and an army of employees right there waiting to ask if you'd like to preorder the GameStop Console.

Don't worry Wombat, I too was a Master system kid.  I loved it, Phantasy Star, Ninja, Shinobi.  Those were some great games.  I loved being able to play Double Dragon the way it was in the arcade and not the crappy NES 1 player version only.

As someone that bought the ridiculously overpriced special edition of Injustice, I can't say I'm surprised there's a GOTY edition; actually I was expecting it. But I wanted to play the game when it first came out and I bought some of the DLC characters at a discounted rate, so I don't feel incredibly cheated. I am, however, annoyed at the fact that the Ultimate Edition is coming out just seven months after the game is released. To me that's just too short a window. Normally with GOTY editions, I resign myself to waiting at least an entire year for one to come out but if that window is going to get smaller and smaller, I will be less likely to purchase games right out of the gate.

CheapyD's comics section was hilarious. I want a CheapyD comedy section every podcast. I was laughing during the entire segment.

Of course I was laughing at Cheapy and not with him. The pause before Wombat and Shipwreck first responded was killer.

Be careful what you wish for in wanted movie directors to shoot video games.  "Lollipop Chainsaw" was directed by one of my favorite directors, James Gunn.  Sure, you probably never heard of him, but he has a good list of imdb movies.  The game was a mess with some cool moments, but I can't stand behind his decisions in the game as he talked about them on various podcasts (like the Nerdist).

Video game directors will someday rise to the forefront as good ones should be heralded as much as movie directors.  They need to bring the game together and you feel it when a game has "it" and when it doesn't.  Personally, I think indie games feel better since because of the smaller crew and better control of the game.  Think of smaller games on Steam for the PC PC PC PC PC like "Outlast" and "Knock Knock" and how good the direction is compared to big budget titles.

Cheapy, you should've gotten TC to fly you and your wife in that copter.

I don't watch Agents of Shield because frankly I don't find the cast all that relatable, except I do like Coulson and Ming Na, even if they are about the same age as I am. I would be happy if they had just two kids on the program, and the rest of the cast be at least 30.

Wombat, what the heck are you talking about with voting about gender.  Democracy is a form of government!  The only bill I know of that even remotely supports your argument is the Indiana Pi bill.  Even if that had passed it would not change the ratio that is Pi, because the ratio is set and is a mathematical fact.  That is not an opinion.  You can't have an "opinion" that someone is a male or female.  This is governed by genetics and there are times when someone is both, but a vote doesn't change the genetics.  An opinion is a personal judgement about something.  You can think that a female is a male, but that is not based on opinion, it is based on fact.  I really can't believe you don't get the difference between opinions and facts.

To quote the guy from Billy Madison:

"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.  At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.  Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.  I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul."

That's appropriate for about 90% of what Wombat says.

What he means is that people will state their "opinions" about something but in reality it's just wrong information. He wasn't referring to specifically government.

What he means is that people will state their "opinions" about something but in reality it's just wrong information. He wasn't referring to specifically government.
To quote Wombat:

"If you were to ask 15 people, without them being able to check, whether or not a rabbit is a male rabbit or a female rabbit. Then you have them vote on whether or not the male rabbit is a female or male rabbit, and female wins, but the rabbit is a male. In a democratic society, that rabbit is now a female whether, regardless of the biology"

And then Cheapy said what we were all thinking:

"What the f$@k are you talking about dude?"

Prior to this, Wombat gives examples of "opinions":

"I think bald headed people are dumber than people with hair. That is not a correct opinion."

"In my opinion that rabbit with a penis is a woman."

Neither of these is an opinion at all. Putting "I think" or "in my opinion" into a sentence doesn't make it an opinion. Both of these have objective parameters that could be measured to ascertain if the statement is true. An opinion is subjective and can only be measured by the one giving it.

codenamelenny, if that was his point, I really did not get that out of it, but you maybe correct. Still, on this topic I stand by my earlier post.
