Does your management tell you to try to milk as many fees as possible on trade ins? I'm getting referb fees on games that are nearly brand new. On top of that not accepting HDMI cables with system trades are also a pain in the ass.

If they try to throw on refurb fees then refute them. They'll likely drop the fees and if they don't, then just go elsewhere.

It all depends on the person, and I think that applies at other stores as well.  I had a Best Buy rank a trade in phone as "Poor" that was just about as perfect as you can get after two years of use, only minor scuffs on the front (which they called "scratches").  Two levels of managers also refused to adjust it.  It was over $100 in difference.  I later that day went another Best Buy closer to my house and he gave me "Good" (which it deserved, it wasn't "Perfect") no questions asked, and yeah he did give it just as thorough of a look over as the other store.

I think some stores have more aggressive management goals, which they push down on the employees.  The one store is a high traffic one that gets a lot of travellers though, so maybe they feel they can do that.  I won't be shopping for phones there again, but maybe repeat business isn't a priority to them.

The best buy one I find strange as I have traded in some games that looked like hell before from bad trades.

As for gamestop, my friend works there and it is largely dependent on the store and what they try to enforce.

I would try going to a different store myself.

a Fuck prick GS clerk once sold me a use game that was obviously not in sell-able condition.  The disk was scratch to hell and there were permanent pen markings on the image.   Fuck ing prick sold it to me without me letting me look at it and tender the transaction. I looked at it in the car and took it right back in and told that over weight Fuck er to return the item.   Fuck er clearly knew that it was not in acceptable condition because he trashed it and gave me my money back.   Fuck GS employees like these needs to go to hell, but then again, there life's probably shit anyways, working minimum wage for a shitty company.

That's a whole lot of anger over a retail employee who's biggest crime seems to be ambivalence, which is not unexpected at such a low pay level.

The problem is he sold me a disc that was so scuffed up that it probably wouldn't even play on my console. I saw him inspected it before tendering the transaction. He knew this"ll be an automatic return, why waste the customers time. Not all GS clerks are bad, just douches like him and the money grubbing corporate executive whore at GME head quarter.

They're obviously going to try to get as much money out of you as they can. I am never going to trade in games to gamestop, never worth it in my opinion.

That happened to me once. Want to know what I did? I took it back and exchanged it for another copy. Who would have thought You could do that? I guess it's the benefit of not having anger issues.

So check the disc before you leave. Goddamn. He's not going to bother to look at the underside of the disc for minimum wage. And even if he was supposed to, he could get another minimum wage job in five seconds.

Reading comprehension difficulty?

What exactly did I miss?

Not letting you look at it? Once you complete the transaction, open up the case and look at it. If it looks obviously damaged, immediately get a refund.

Pen markings on the topside of the disc? I wouldn't notice those either if I was just rushing your ass out the door as a minimum wage employee.

You seem to be really angry that you walked to your car and back. You can look at it in the store and save yourself 20 steps.

I hate buying preowned at GS because of what a crapshoot it is to get a good condition copy.  Sometimes you get a near mint, this-was-just-unwrapped complete game but most of the time you get shafted.

In my ten years of shopping at GS, I've had:

  • Cases/discs switched out while they're grabbing from the drawer
  • Greatest Hits discs in original packaging and vice versa
  • Cracked discs
  • Discs completely covered in resurfacing grit
  • Discs so scratched they wouldn't play
  • Missing discs that takes the employee 20 minutes to not find in the drawer
  • Derogatory remarks about the game I'm buying
  • Preowned games ringing up as new so I don't get a TIV bump
  • Damage disc only games having the same price as pristine complete copies
  • etc.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy GS preowned, but if you're a collector and value condition it is definitely not the place to be buying games.  All they guarantee is that you'll get a disc and it should play, maybe.

Most of the games I have gotten used over the past year or so have been in great condition. Then again, I check the disc and my receipt before I leave the store.

One trick is to go to a store in the ghetto part of town. There you will see a lot of mint-condition games because people steal them and trade them into GameStop. I always go back to where I grew up to get games with cases, manuals and no scratches on either the disc or the box. Wal Mart's loss is your gain.

its funny when you see someone enter the store, and they aren't even sure what they have.

I remember during the height of Wii madness, I was at a GS when they told this one guy that they'd take his Wii remotes this time, but that he couldn't bring any more in. Apparently he had brought several in over the previous few weeks.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention he wanted the much smaller cash amount as opposed to store credit.

I don't know why anyone would trade in games at Gamestop. They rape you whereas ebay or CAG will have people that "Buy it at a high price!"

Because it's quick and easy. And if you can get a 30%-50% tradein bonus, it can sometimes come close. Especially figuring in that the trade-in credit has taxes paid basically.

There are many times when you can get substantially more for a game at GS than either eBay or CAG - especially CAG. After all, we are a bunch of cheapasses ;).

The only thing I ever trade in at GS is my extra controllers when they get replaced with a new one.  IIRC the only games I've traded in the past year were The Last of Us (I absolutely hated it, plus I got $20 over what I originally paid), Rock Revolution (to clear space), and SOCOM Confrontation (it's a coaster since the servers are gone).  Everything else has been DS3s, 360 controllers and a couple of random AV cords I had laying around.

About four years ago I traded in a good chunk of my 360/PS3 backlog to get King of Fighters XII...regretted it ever since.

Most people on CAG will lowball the Fuck out of you, actually. GS is a pretty great way to get rid of games for a good price. I should know, I flip there all the time.
