Fight as a Soldier. Lead as a General. Rise as a Legend.

Ryse: Son of Rome is a stunning action-adventure that follows Marius Titus on a heroic quest to avenge the death of his family, and preserve the honor of Rome, at all costs.

Take Your Place in History

Embark on a journey of revenge, betrayal and divine intervention:

Ryse: Son of Rome tells the story of Marius Titus, a young Roman soldier who witnesses the murder of his family at the hands of barbarian bandits, then travels with the Roman army to Britannia to seek revenge. Quickly rising through the ranks, Marius must become a leader of men and defender of the Empire on his quest to exact vengeance - a destiny he soon discovers can only be fulfilled much closer to home.

There's No Place Like Rome

Ryse: Son of Rome presents a cinematic recreation of the Roman Empire in breathtaking detail, from the northern reaches of Britannia, to the Coliseum and the very heart of Rome itself. Stunning visuals bring every aspect of the Empire to life: Incredibly detailed facial animations add character to the people you encounter, and new CryENGINE features allow for a world unlike anything you've seen on console before.

Become Legendary

Action, adventure and Brutal Realism:

Experience a cinematic adventure that leads you deep into the dramatic world of the Roman Empire. The brutality and intensity of Roman warfare are brought to life in visceral detail, thrusting the player into the chaos of close-quarters combat. See and feel the emotion on your opponent's face! Players have to master sophisticated sword and shield combat techniques to vary attacks and manage multiple enemies, and then finish foes with one of over a hundred brutal final executions.

CryENGINE Unleashed

Witness the power of CryENGINE 3 in full flow on Xbox One. New features like Crytek’s Virtual Camera hardware provide more directorial power than ever before, meaning developers can make lighting, environment and effects changes on the spot to create a more immersive game world. Meanwhile, advanced Vertex Animation combines with numerous other new features to set new standards for facial animation and realism. At every turn, CryENGINE’s power is put to work not just to change what you see on-screen, but how you connect to the action too.

New Ways to Play

Command and fight with Kinect for Xbox One. Optional voice commands allow players to direct attacks and encourage their troops, while motivational cries can turn the tide of a mass battle by rallying troops or focusing attacks. Physical gestures can be used in combination with (or instead of) button presses to launch ranged weapons, or to block with your shield. Full SmartGlass integration: With the ability to deep link straight into the campaign and launch from SmartGlass, players can jump directly into the experience. In-game DVR lets players review and share the best experiences from their game directly from their tablet. A context-sensitive achievement and help guide will help players unlock secrets along the way, with tips that are synched to their location and situation. Players can manage their character, inventory and upgrades directly from their SmartGlass device, and also get the latest game news.

Koalak you obviously put a lot of effort into this thread, I don't know why someone gave you a 1 star. That just doesn't seem right and it's prob people butthurt over exclusives. Ryse has seen a big change in its developement and I've been watching it through all these years. I'm liking the webseries as well, you guys should check it out if you haven't as it's quality directed live action. Makes me want to watch Gladiator again, I can already see Russell Crowe yelling "Are you not entertained!"

Ryse: Son of Rome - The Fall Ep1

I think the game's come a long way since it's Kinect only concept and their refining of the UI and gameplay after E3 looks to be bringing the combat into the combat flow of titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum and City - with environmental kill animations from titles such as Sleeping Dogs. The dynamic Colosseum looks like a really cool feature and well yeah why wouldn't they do that, this is a video game after all. They are being limited to a historical theme and time piece but it does seem like they're trying to make a fun game behind it with a combo system that would be inspired off titles like DMC or Bayonetta.

Ryse also looks visually impressive, Crytek sure knows how to do engines well that's for sure. Aside from the visuals the animations look fluid and the motion capture we saw on the main character's face will def bring those playing this game into the story and gaming experience. Far Cry and Crysis are two of my favorite franchises and in large part to how well that developer optimized their game to their CryEngine. My only concern is that the combat, after a few hours, becomes too repetitive and lacks any new breath of excitement.

I think that's a valid concern about the game, as the combat system, while seeming familiar, could get repitious.  The Arkham games combat system seems to get praise because it works well in a game that also has puzzles, stealth, scale and various types of combat options.  If all it had was just Batman punching and occassionally blocking and throwing a batarang, with little attack variation, it would be disappointing.  Hopefully the game has much more to do, and it just hasn't been shown yet.

Also, I feel like the online will not last, as for some reason cooperative online seems to never last as long as competitive.  While I know Horde Mode was very popular in Gears of War 2 (and 3 even), it's the only title I experienced where you could find people playing it without delay years later.  It seems like without a competitive mode the game won't have as great of a successful online.  I should note that I actually like that it focused more on cooperative play, rather than a generic one on one gladiator fight setup which would just involve people quitting out of losing matches, but it just seems like it'll be short lived.

This games looks very good though.  I really like the glistening armor effect, though I find the gore to be lacking (no blood spraying wildly?), and would actually hope there's an option to turn it off.  I'm not into gore porn, but I'm suprised that a game that's focused on the brutality of combat doesn't feature as much blood, yet has limbs that are severed off, showing bone and tissue beneath, but no blood rupture.  And the executions seem like they would become redundant quite quickly.  It's ashame that you can't skip through them after a few times of them being displayed.

I was hoping for a demo of this game, as everything I've seen has left me disappointed, but its Crytek...it can't be that bad, can it?

I'm really interested in this, but I'm holding my hope that it'll be good or bad until I finally play it. It looks impressive, but impressive doesn't always mean good.

I have been reading good reviews of this game. I am pretty excited for it. I think it will be my first game I buy for the Xbox One.

Well it's interesting that Crytek has decided to be going the all free to play route from now on (after Ryse of course) so I can't say lol. Considering how much support Microsoft is giving this game, not only re-doing its development but also the web series, I'm feeling it'll be decent if nothing else.

Hoping Redbox jumps on the next gen quickly so I can rent this for a couple days.

It looks great, but seems like it would have little replay value to me after I beat it. But damn does it look good.

I worked on this game! So excited for launch!!! I'm sure you all will like this.

It's killing me that the review embargo was right up to the day before launch.  I remain very hopeful for this game, but usually last-minute embargo's don't bode well.  Hope I'm wrong.  Still, this is my first full retail X1 game.  Cannot wait!

FYI, there is some decent weapon and shield dlc as part of the MTN DEW promotion and you can nab some in-game cash ($50) by reading the free web-comic online at the official Ryse site.

Seems like Crytek isn't a very good developer when it comes to gameplay. They can make great engines but they can't make games that are fun at all. This game suffers from the Crysis/Rage problem. Looks great but it isn't very fun. It's a shame too. Hopefully a sequel will fix these issues. You'd think they would try to steal more ideas from the Batman games

Gamespot 4/10. Game is a turd. I feel bad for those who pre-ordered and couldn't find this out sooner, due to the review embargo that lifted today. Video review- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EanJmr1I2Ls

You gotta be kidding me right?

Crytek makes some of the BEST games out there:

Farcry series

Crysis series

No this game just is very repetitive as changing Kinect only to controller gameplay threw the game's development a wrench.

Even watching a 40% video review still makes me want to play this. I just don't trust reviews on this one.

They only made the first Far Cry. Ubisoft Montreal made the sequels.
In my blind rage I glossed over that, thank you for that correction.

I remembered when Far Cry 1 came out. Yeah it was the shit, everybody talked about it. The AI was super smart, the open gameplay let you choose whichever way you wanted to approach enemies and then you had everyone and their brother using Far Cry for their Benchmark on the PC because their game looked amazing. Crytek makes great games, I wouldn't let Ryse sour your entire perception of them.

I saw the 61 on Metacritic but generally I like to make my own impressions (for example, I absolutely loved Naughty Bear despite its poor reviews) so I went ahead and bought the game. Haven't tried it out yet, but watching the quick look Giant Bomb did, it looked fun.

Dude! I loved Naughty Bear too! I pre-ordered this and don't plan on switching it. I can't wait to be able to try it out

I'm getting this later today (coooooome on UPS guy!) and remain optimistic.  The Kotaku review expressed EXACTLY what I want from this game and they gave it a positive review.

It's funny I think there's a lot of support for this game as I've heard gamers and critics alike talking about improvements they could do with a sequel. Being a launch title, yeah the poor reviews might not affect its sales actually.

Paul if you haven't played Far Cry 1 yet I highly recommend it. I like Ubisoft and I like the Far Cry series but they really only just redeemed themselves with Far Cry 3 as having regenerative outposts, weapon jams, crazy accurate AI and malaria popping pills gameplay implemented into Far Cry 2 was an injustice (the open world, livable flame system, hidden items, combat and story were good though). There was also a big glitch that didn't allow people to continue on the campaign in FC2 and it wasn't until a few articles were written about it from GamesRadar before Ubisoft finally came out with a patch for the game lol.

I've been watching Pixxel play for like over an hour and the game doesn't look bad at all IMO

I played the first 4 or 5 chapters and I think the game is pretty good.  Yes, its mostly just fighting, but the fight system has a nice flow to it when you come across multiple different types of enemies that require you to switch between attacking, parrying & blocking at the drop of a hat.  Being able to choose what bonuses you get for doing executions is great and it works on the fly so if things go bad and you need some extra health its literally a D pad push away and you have plenty of choices in upgrade paths.

My biggest complaint is that for a game with 3 different types of collectibles, there are way too many occasions where there are dead end side paths you go down expecting collectibles and not finding any, only to end up at a part of the level where they just put all 3 collectibles in the same small area.

I know the first Far Cry was pretty good. As others have pointed out they only made the one game. I never got a chance to play it myself but from what I saw it was a sharp game. Crysis I just found boring personally. It was just another look how nice our game looks type of game. I never found it to be very fun

I've really enjoyed it so far. It's much deeper than most reviews give it credit for. Yes, if your desire is to burn through it ASAP it will probably be boring. Play on a harder difficulty and play it almost like.a rhythm game.... the depth comes mostly from timing and the inherent learning of enemy tactics.

In my mind the Kotaku review is the most accurate.

Agreed Nosferatu!  I'm only on chapter 2, but I'm digging it.  The combat is fun and I think that if you're going to knock Ryse for it's combat, you'll need to include the Arkham games in there too because the combat is very, very similar.

For what it's worth, I dig the story too.  Also agree that the Kotaku review captured what I wanted out of the game and seemed to reflect my opinions so far.  Great day one purchase.

Just finished Ryse. It's the first next-gen game I've finished and it was because it was the one I most wanted to (for comparison, the following are currently in some form of play through between my 2 new systems; Dead Rising 3, Killzone, Forza, FIFA and NBA 2k). For some reason it got a lot more crap in the reviews than it deserved. I REALLY enjoyed it. I played through on the 2nd hardest difficulty first time through and it was a decent challenge which I actually still believe is key to this game being entertaining. It is actually VERY tightly controlled (as in game controls) and timing your strikes based on when the previous hits strike actually takes some precision. Doing so means higher combo counts (+2 for a properly timed hit), faster strikes which can interrupt enemy strikes and if you land enough well-timed strikes consecutively it allows you go into executioner mode where you can trigger executions faster once you break an enemy's defenses (eg: stagger them) making it easier to clear a room. Rapid kills and high combo counts increase your points much faster to buy new skills and combat upgrades. Oh, and as for the execution QTEs that it gets so much crap for..... yes, they are QTEs if you aren't trying for skill points. The thing is,  if you wait for the button prompts and are FAST the best you'll do is a centurion ranking on the execution. You will not get a legendary unless you are watching the animations to predict the upcoming prompt (eg: if your sword is swinging it will be an X, if you are about to stomp on someone it will be a Y). In fact, I think the inability to fail them is an important indicator that the emphasis was on focusing to improve your score, not the irritation of having to repeat a sequence against the same bad guy over and over because you were slightly off on the timing. The executions are really just a close up, extra gory perspective on the timing based combat found elsewhere where getting the timing and predicting based on what is going on around you VISUALLY is the most important element. Unlike other action combat games such as Batman Arkham, this game gives you no indicator of an attacking enemy except the act of them attacking you forcing you to be observant instead of looking for a symbol (exception: rare enemy "heavy" attacks will cause them to glow red to let you know it isn't blockable, but to roll out instead). This is a game where if you do poorly or, worse, die you know it is because you played poorly and I always had the desire to try, try again and better myself. The game is fun, entertaining and, while shortish (I'm guessing 7 hours?) appears to be very careful not to overstay it's welcome and openly invites repeatability to improve combat scores, etc.

This is a game the reviewers got very wrong. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and argue that the review mechanism, particularly for a console launch where there was a bunch to get through, did the game no favors. I think the desire to blast through as fast as possible likely led them to play on easier difficulties (even normal) and button mash through without trying to truly utilize the surprisingly deep and precise system in pale to really excel. And the easier difficulties would definitely allow you to button mash through which would definitely make the game feel like an overly repetitive, button mashing snore. The story I found interesting enough to push me forward, particularly since we rarely see games set in Rome. However, the complaint that we have seen it's story ideas elsewhere is valid. It has a large story debt to pay to Gladiator, but damn if you didn't wanna play through that movie one day. The coliseum scene in Ryse was a particular highlight to me.

I hope this helps someone, because anyone who likes action games such as the combat in the Batman Arkham series and others of its ilk as well as picked up an Xbone at launch, should have this game. It's fun, it's gorgeous and it utilizes those next-gen graphics for a purpose by elucidating its combat system.

I beat the game as well. I really enjoyed the gameplay.  I think its funny how people complain theres too much fighting, but I'd rather have the fighting than having to fill time between fights like God of War does by having you kick around boxes to complete boring puzzles.

They could've used a bit more variety in the executions (at least let me cut off more than someone's right arm) and the placement of collectibles was extremely confusing.

I will most likely check out the multiplayer tomorrow, so if anyone wants to add me, my GT is in the sig.

Yeah I've noticed over time, and following or listening to each, that many reviewers do just play on normal or easy for a lot of games.

My buddy is selling me his copy for $40. It looks like a great game and one of the only launch titles i've wanted to play,I am really loving Dead Rising 3 though and more than halfway finished with it.

Anyone having issues playing this game multiplayer?  Seems crazy since you only need to connect with one other person, but using just about every option they have, I cannot seem to connect to anyone.

As of right now my "find a match" has been going for 15 minutes. When it says estimated time 00:23 does that mean 23 minutes and not 23 seconds?

I'm almost at the end of the game and it is exceeding every expectation.  My advice to anyone who hasn't gotten too far is to read the online comics about the story of Damacles.  It'll make the story of Ryse make much more sense and give it weight and meaning.

Really liking the game as well.. don't get me wrong.. no reason why we should be fighting the same enemies over and over...

but the game looks good and story is decent enough.. glad i got it

I finished last night and I love this game. It exceeded every expectation I had. I can't say it's up there in the launch game hall of fame with Super Mario 64 and Halo, but it's definitely in there with classics I love like Panzer Dragoon and Luigis Mansion.

The reviews were so, so wrong about this game. The combat is more involved than they'll have you believe, the environments and gameplay are varied enough for a 6 hour game, the music is solid and the visuals will melt your eyes.

I have to agree with the praise without even playing it. I watched game clips uploaded from friends and the combat looked no worse than the Batman games, at all, which are pretty much universally praised. And the game looks stunning.

I'd really say fu*k the naysayers on this one, and the people who played it obviously have more insight and really like it.

I think it got reviewed poorly because the reviewers are getting tired of the fighting mechanics. It probably didn't felt so fresh for them to go from Batman to Ryse since the fighting mechanics is somewhat similar. It felt like the reviewers are just worn out with the mechanics and wanted more innovation and not the same thing again. It probably would have reviewed better if it was released earlier.

Woah woah woah, hang on man. Lol that's a big distinction and by not even playing the game. The biggest thing that the first successful Batman , Batman:AA, did was visceral fluid and dynamic combat. Sorry, I'm pretty sure the only way whether you'd feel Ryse is like that would be by playing the game first hand and experiencing the dynamic fluid combat if it's present.

Having played AA and watching the recorded Ryse combat, I didn't see much difference. Just my opinion. Since people who are playing the game stated as such I must said I agreed based on what I had seen.
