I did a horrible job of working on my gaming in 2013. I had almost given it up completely thanks to having NO free time whatsoever. 2 kids and 2 jobs left me with very little energy or time for gaming all year long, making 2013 one of my worst gaming years ever for completing games. With my main job blocking all gaming sites at work I was unable to keep up and be an active participant in forums anymore, disconnecting me from it all even more.

Thanks to the Extra Life event in 2013 my gaming spirit was revitalized. It was an amazing thing to take part of and I was able to raise over $1800 for St. Louis Children's hospital while getting back into gaming. and I have found ways to make time to game more often, and finished the year out completing a couple of backlogged titles.

Here's to a more productive 2014 from a gaming standpoint! I look forward to both attacking my backlog and getting into some new games (and hopefully a PS4).

Backloggery

This year's goal is a minimum of 20 40 games beaten, including as much of my Shin Megami Tensei backlog as possible.

For games with difficulty settings, all were beaten on Normal/Medium unless otherwise noted. All Steam games were beaten in Windows unless otherwise noted. Any games listed twice (for whatever reason) count as one if they're on the same platform. I'm not counting DLC and secondary game modes toward the main total.

(1/1): My goal for the year is the same as the last two (20122013): 40 completed games. I know it may be unusual and that there's another thread somewhere in here for similar purposes, but I also collect my general media consumption in some spoiler tags at the bottom of this post.

(2/25): I'm going to have to play a lot more PS3 games or install a bigger hard drive to keep up with the volume of PS+ freebies. Bummed that I signed up 1 day too late for DMC, but I'm excited to get Bioshock Infinite, Brothers, and soon Remember Me, along with other stuff I would not have tried out!

(3/4): Just wanted to say that I think it's great that more people are doing capsule reviews. Cheers to EldritchOnRye, Tossin, Rise9, and my completion tab buddy Melatonin!
(7/14): I've taken to playing INGRESS recently. I can't tell if it's a good idea.  I think I'm thinking about it too much, about to crest lv. 5 in less than a week, but I guess I like that it makes me want to go walk a couple miles several times a day.
(11/11): It's possible I didn't complete any games in September and October. I've been playing some long ranging or unending games on my phone, and super employed in those two months.
(12/22): I've been starting so many more games than I'm finishing lately! I guess it's an investment on some easy points for 2015...
(1/2/15): Really went after all the discounted and free iOS offerings this year, since the Steam sale left me cold.

FINAL UPDATE: I'm marking this down as my third successful year of game tab in a row.  35 finished games, more than ever, even if some of them I do hope to return to and explore further. As always, more games that I played a lot of but never end, and even more games that I'm somewhere in the middle of but can't yet count for a win. I also racked up a hell of a lot of board games and TV series, a surprising decrease in movie watching, and a downright disappointing decrease in standup performances, since I seem to have tracked them all in the footer of this huge post. The story continues in 2015 here!
January (2):

:pc:Broken Age (act 1) The art and the dialogue are terrific. I had some real gripes with the puzzle-y parts early on, when I had the right idea for something on Vella's side and wasn't allowed to do it until I collected the hints first, and Shay has a super convenient object for no discernible reason, but I got on board a little more when the worlds opened up. Felt clever about having a prediction re: the act break. 4/5

:pc:Cook Serve Delicious A steam sale purchase. I had a good time with this, collected platinum star rating, and most of the achievements except, like, server 15,000 meals, since the whole story section only took about 7,500. Tips: You can serve a cooked item while preparing something else, and nobody ever complains when you give them extra ice cream. 4/5

February (3):

:ps3:Sound Shapes I think I grabbed this two Christmases ago, just finished it up now to make room for some PS+ stuff. It's an okay little platformer and all, but kind of a chore to play. I finished the campaign, but I don't care about trophies enough to work on the challenge levels, and the interface for the beat-maker thing is too much work to spend time on. 2/5

apple.png
 - Threes - I didn't find this -quite- as addictive as the popular opinion. It's nice to sit and fold numbers while watching TV, so i'll still play from time to time, but right now I have the highest score of anyone I know, 27,783 28,092 64,797, and whenever I have the best score in one of these things, that releases the hooks. I don't -have- to play it again until it turns out someone has beaten me. 4/5

:gba:Dragon Warrior I - This title has a fixture in my childhood. I think I mainly watched my dad play, but maybe started and restarted games of my own. We played forever. Ridmular (sic) was so far away. We did beat it though, on the original NES. This was the GBC version, played on my phone, and I beat it in approximately 48 hours. Not 48 hours of play, but from the time I started. I had all the best gear, and I paced up in down in the Dragon Lord's front hallway to boost up two levels to 21 in order to take him out. Sure, I checked a world map online, but the original game came with a printed one. And Nintendo Power was full of 'em. My first issue even had a pull-out mini-book full of Dragon Warrior stuff… I can only assume they really changed the balance around on the remake. Or maybe I've got a lot of questions for my dad… 3/5

March (5):

:ps3:Remember Me - Good thing: This was part of my new PS+ subscription! Bad thing: The game. It was secretly(?) a God of War clone. They really sold this on the memory remixing, and there's so little of that here. Most of the playing in memories you do is in the vein of the Mario help system: watch a ghost do something, then do that thing. It got a little better after the tutorial levels, but that's about when the reusing levels starts. Even a remix part got recycled. 2/5    Also,
It contains the line, "you must run down riddlehead and steal the access protocols for the conception cube. He's headed for the metal security post on the 103rd floor." but that's not really a spoiler, because it doesn't mean anything.

:gba:Dragon Warrior II - I was listening to some of the Indoor Kids podcast while I played this, and someone talked about how sometimes you play games to beat them and other times just to see them. I was in DWI to beat it, but I think DWII just to see it all. I brazenly turned to online help with entering the final area, when I saw no villager that happened to know the answer, I used saves to win the lotto and it didn't bother me at all. I came to see, and I did. The beginning of part 3 seems an overwhelming pile of choices, so I might not come back to the series right away. 3/5

 - 10000000 A match 3 type game. I played this last year, but I got a new iOS device since then, so my save was gone and played it again.  Took about 3.5 hours of game time, but felt rather longer, since it was spread over months. 3/5

apple.png
 - Halcyon - Last year I described this as a kind of frenetic "match-two" game. For some idiotic reason I started playing it again and it got its claws back into me. A wasted day or two later, I've finally rebeaten the 'Stars' section. 3/5

:ps3:Thomas Was Alone - PS+ keeps on giving. I'd been interested in this one. I think it knocked off in one night, and then I started again on the commentary track. It was just… fine. 3/5

April (5):

:pc: - DerivClicker  - I collected all the things. I don't think there's anything else to do. It's not as fancy as cookie clicking or Candy Box or Clicking Bad from last year, which it occurs to me now I never logged. I guess I never got every last thing in cookie clicker.  2/5

apple.png
 - Monument Valley - Fairly fun, and I liked the one level that was a box that opens. I read reviews that promised 3-4 hours of gameplay so the sort-of high price (for an iOS game) seemed worth it. It turned out to be barely 1 hour of gaming, so I kind of wish I'd waited around for a sale. Classic CAG. 3/5

:pc: - A Dark RoomMore or less in the browser based clicky genre. It was intriguing as I unlocked new things, and surprising as I kept forgetting I was playing and returned days later to find I had tons of supplies.  Combat becomes a chore towards the end. Finished twice. 3/5

:pc: - Choppin' Wood - I'm really into this kind of game lately. The balance of attending and then ignoring fits in just right with the jobs I've been working recently. There's not much to this one though. More theme but maybe less interesting than DerivClicker above.  2/5
:pc: - Dig Hard - This is a great little game jam game co-created by a schoolmate of mine. Brief, but a lot of fun while it lasted. Also, the power went out in my building just as I won, which was a little unsettling. 4/5

May (4):
apple.png
 - Make it Rain - Maybe the worst of these incremental clicky games I've played. This one's for iPhone, and spits an awful lot of ads at the player. I did not collect all the things, but I did get to the 'YOU WIN' screen that forces you to stop playing. 1/5
:ps3: - Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - Very nicely done short story. Explores the options and mechanics of controlling two characters at once in a lot of fun ways. Would have been fun in co-op, but I get how that sort of defeats the purpose. Pleasantly twisty narrative, lots of places to sit in-game, surprising finale. 4/5
:ps3: - Pixeljunk Shooter - Replay while watching some videos. Still mostly fun, still reminds me of Solar Jetman, but I think what I really wanted to (re)play was Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. 3/5
:ps3: - Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse - An unexpected gem. I've been trying a bunch of offerings from PS+ and I didn't think I'd stick with what appears to be Mickey 64, but the level design is fantastic in this. In the early levels, I was impressed with how you always end up visiting and exploring the interesting scenery in the deep background. In the later levels, I was impressed by how time is truly of the essence. I ended up nearly 100 diamonds short and don't plan to go looking for them, but the way that the levels kind of reminded me of rides at Disneyland in terms of tone, or space economy, or delight, or something, was a real treat. 5/5

June (1):
:ps3:The Unfinished Swan A neat concept that I generally found to be kind of a chore to work through. Gilliam was a nice touch. 2/5

:wii: - I'm not really counting these, but I did beat the demos of Project: Guard, Project: Giant Robot, and Splattoon at E3!

July (4):
:pc:EVOLand - I've had my eye on it for a while, bit during the Steam summer event. Generally pretty fun, but by the second half, the gimmicks have mostly faded away into actually being the kind of game they're joking about.  My time was probably split evenly between getting up to the last boss, and then running around collecting everything before taking him out. Finished with 100% completion. 3/5

:ds: Picross e4 This is, I think, the third picross game I've played on a DS. Back to 2D. I liked that you get bonus puzzles for being a loyal franchise buyer. Blasted through this one really quick though, in about a month. 3/5
:ds:Picross e3 And having finished that one, I then went and wrapped up the last few puzzles from last year's installment. None of these are as much fun and addictive as Picross DS was though.  Maybe because then it was a novelty. It also had the fun Nintendo themed level, which never re-appeared. 3/5

apple.png
 - AC-130 Air Gunship It's like that level in that AAA shooting game, except a lot less fun!  ..I still played all 15 levels.. 2/5

August (3):

apple.png
 - Hoplite - Technically, I have won this game, but there's a lot of challenges and achievements and stuff so it doesn't feel beaten. It will live on in my iPad. I'm pretty sure this isn't "roguelike." Which is good. For me. 4/5

:ps3:Tomb Raider - My first Tomb Raider game ever, thanks to PS+. This one is basically Uncharted. Often I have joke (or not-joke) where I feel like maybe I'm not the good guy in a game where I'm slaughtering a film crew's worth of people, but Lara seemed like a total maniac in this thing. If you play it for stealth, she's killing possibly helpful people without ever talking to them, but since she appeared to me as a bloodthirsty monster, and maybe an unreliable narrator, I took no opportunity for stealth. 87% collection. 4/5

apple.png
 - Star Wars: Cantina - I've been cleaning out my phone, cluttered with unused and unloved apps. This was a little diner dash-type game with Star Wars-themed patrons. The whole thing's like half an hour long, and hasn't yet been updated for iOS 6. Anyway, it's been deleted now. 2/5

October (0):

apple.png
 - Star Wars Commander - I don't know if I finished any games in the month of October, so I'll just mention a couple that I played for a while and then more or less quit. I made it to Level 6 in SWC so far, on the Rebel side, no IAP. The biggest takeaway I have from this game is how not worth playing it feels. And, since I've stopped playing, I've racked up way more points (medals) than I would have by working at it, since waves of randos throw themselves on my well defended but mostly abandoned base. 3/5

apple.png
 - INGRESS - Google does a great job of hitting the various facets of freemium games that make this somewhat addictive, but it's basically capture the flag with flags that dissolve even if nobody's actively destroying them, as a front for a big data mining operation. I don't regret playing, but there's no end, and I know I'm not going to get as involved as the people hacking the system to do brilliant and impossible things, so level 8 is going to have to be my victory condition. 4/5

November (1):
:pc:Hadean Lands I backed this Text Adventure on Kickstarter 4 years ago. I'm also delighted to point out that according to the Leader Board, I'm the third person to report finishing it. The game is concerned with Alchemy, and the performing of alchemical rituals to perform the heavy lifting required to repair your damaged alchemical starship / enclosed space. The puzzles are all fun and logically reasonable and make you feel clever when you reason them out or when a flash of insight unlocks another four rooms all in a flurry, the writing is great, there're some jokes and just enough plot to keep you exploring and wandering. I took several pages of notes and drew my own map. I'm happy I backed this, happy I played it, and happy I played it early because a) there are no FAQs yet, and twitter only spoiled one puzzle for me. and b) if it had it the 'to play' backlog, I may have never gotten to it.  5/5

December (6):
apple.png
 - Defuse Dbomb I figured there had to be a game in the app store about bomb disposal, and after trying a bunch of demos, this was the one that seemed the most similar to fun. I thought there would be lockpicking games too, but not really. 2/5
apple.png
 - Smash Hit This is a game about breaking glass things with marbles. Or ball bearings, maybe? Anyway, it's pretty satisfying to smash things, and because I didn't buy the IAP unlocks, I got good enough to play the whole game in single sittings. 4/5

apple.png
 - God of Light A really well done puzzle game. I got 3 stars-or-whatever on every level and found all the fireflies. The core game is about reflecting beams of light around, but new mechanics and units are added regularly to keep things interesting. Really nice. 5/5

apple.png
 - Space is Key 1 and 2 A port of a simple-as-can-be flash platformer, in which you make your square jump over the rectangles at the appropriate times. I didn't think much of it at first, but I played through all 100 levels (between the game and it's included sequel), and then the next night I did it again. 3/5

apple.png
 - Forbidden Island This is a port of a board game to iOS, but that makes it a video game, and I did win several rounds of this game. I beat it playing two characters on my own, and with my girlfriend and I playing one and two characters apiece, on various difficulties. Have yet to beat the toughest modes or buy the additional island setups. A solid adaptation. 4/5

apple.png
 - 80 Days I was genuinely surprised to find that I successfully navigated around the globe in only 77 days. I thought all was lost! This seems like a huge game, with so many more possible cities to visit, routes to take, or even things to do in the cities I've already been through. The sheer difficulty of seeing everything makes this seem like the kind of game that would drive me crazy, and might even somehow slow me down from playing more in the future. I have a lot of exploring to do here.. 4/5

This is my fifth year documenting all the games I've completed throughout this year.

Basically, what completing a game means to me is if I see credits rolling, I beat it. As a bonus, I'm also trying to earn all of the trophies and achievements if I can. Last year, instead of setting a goal of games beaten, I wanted to beat more than I bought, which was successful. I'm going to attempt to keep that trend going.

Notes:

Huh. Haven't really been gaming, but nothing wrong with being a late bloomer. Finally finished off the trophies for Borderlands and took the day and finished Castle of Illusion. Right now I'm deciding what's next on the plate, perhaps Lollipop Chainsaw?

2/18 - Only game I've beaten so far this year is New Super Mario Bros WIi U.  Most fun I've had with a NSMB game and I'll definitely go back and play more but I finished the main game.

2/23 - Finished off Ducktales: Remastered a couple nights ago.  Awesome game, fun, simple, challening gameplay, great graphics, all the character of the old cartoon show.

1/1 - Wow, I completely neglected paying attention to this thread all year.  Didn't finish off many more games, did beat Mass Effect and Pikmin 3, both of which were awesome games.

2014, let's rock. Games in green are complete.  Unnumbered games in green were beaten a previous year and completed this year.  Since I'm doing mini-reviews for each game, I'm using spoiler tags for each separate month because otherwise this post will get really long.

JANUARY - 9 (2 DLC)
1. Super Hexagon (Steam) - 1.1.2014
Possibly the most addicting game I've ever played.  Absolutely brutal while remaining utterly compelling and fun.  And only for 30 cents during the Steam winter sale...9/10
2. BIT.TRIP Presents...Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (Steam) - 1.2.2014
Better than the original in many aspects, but much longer than needed.  Given the limited amount of elements there can be in the level design, there is really no need for 100 levels.  I would have cut it down to 60 at the most.  7/10
3. Guacamelee Gold Edition (Steam) - 1.5.2014
Great little Metroidvania with satisfying combat and the perfect length in my opinion.  I was pleased that there were more platforming elements than I originally expected.  8/10
4. Electronic Super Joy (Steam) - 1.6.2014
Controls just aren't tight enough to be really enjoyable.  Interesting style and good humor though.  5/10
5. Borderlands - The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned (Steam) - 1.6.2014
Fun but repetitive as I find many zombie themed games can be...7/10
6. Borderlands - The Secret Armory of General Knoxx (Steam) - 1.8.2014
Enjoyed this one more than Zombie Island.  The setting was interesting, I like how it was basically one big deserted highway.  And the new vehicles added some flair.  7/10
7. Windosill (Steam) - 1.8.2014
Very short but neat little puzzle-type game.  The animation is wonderful and generally pretty humorous.  7/10
Rogue Legacy (Steam) - 1.9.2014
Went back to beat the remix bosses, which were tough but very fun
8. Scribblenauts Unlimited (Steam) - 1.11.2014
Very nice game that naturally let's you peer into the minds of the developers a little bit.  My main complaint is that the puzzles are generally too easy and often many are solvable in the same fashion.  7/10
DLC Quest (Steam) - 1.12.2014
Went back to finish Live Freemium or Die.  I still think it's a bad game, but this campaign was pretty funny at least.
9. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (Steam) - 1.26.2014
Simple puzzles, neat gameplay mechanics, great storytelling.  Much darker and more adult than I was expecting.  8/10
10.  Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (Steam) - 1.27.2014
Been addicted to this for about 2 weeks in January.  Could possibly be a top 10 favorite...just completely engrossing game that does pretty much everything right.  10/10
11. NES Remix (Wii U) - 1.30.2014
A neat experiment with great presentation and ideas but not enough experimentation and variety to make the challenges really interesting.  7/10

FEBRUARY - 9 (1 DLC)
12.  Bioshock Infinite (Steam) - 2.2.2014
Absolutely incredible opening and closing sequences, the created world is just so top-notch.  Sadly everything in between was pretty bland gameplay-wise, and the story is just too goofy and convoluted.  7/10
13.  DuckTales Remastered (Steam) - 2.3.2014
A nice reboot that is perfect in the way it handles the game's content (not changing what shouldn't be changed but adding lots of extras).  The game is actually a lot easier than I remember, and the parts that are difficult are generally really cheap fall deaths, but that's old-school gaming for you I suppose.  Also the added story scenes are abysmal and should be skipped.  7/10
14.  Borderlands  - Claptrap's New Robot Revolution (Steam) - 2.4.2014
Decent expansion, not much to say really. 7/10
15.  The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS) - 2.10.2014
Thankfully I got to borrow this game from a friend who had already beaten it, so I had the option of Hero mode right from the start.  This surely led to greater enjoyment of the game because I was actually presented with a CHALLENGE and had to be more methodical about certain areas and bosses.  Anyways, the game is absolutely beautiful and has a fantastic soundtrack (new dark world theme is amazing).  I loved the shorter, more concise dungeons (which were still as well-designed as ever).  9/10
16.  Mutant Mudds Deluxe (Steam) - 2.11.2014
Fun little platformer, very simple in style but some of the more challenging levels were a lot of fun.  7/10
17.  StreetPass Mii Plaza - Mii Force (3DS) - 2.12.2014
Actually a pretty great shooter in it's own right with lots of customization options.  8/10
18.  Divekick  (Steam) - 2.13.2014
....WTF?  7/10
19.  Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (Steam) - 2.18.2014
I regret not playing on a higher difficulty level as it was pretty easy, but this was definitely a good game with nice mission variety. Voice acting was pretty bad at points though.  7/10
20.  Antichamber (Steam) - 2.21.2014
One of the most creative games I've ever played.  It starts off requiring more experimentation and exploration than anything, but the longer you play the more logic-based puzzles you run into.  I think everything owes it to themselves to try this game; it is a mind-melter.  9/10
21.  Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - 2.26.2014
Feels like more levels for Donkey Kong Country Returns, which is both good and bad I suppose.  8/10

MARCH - 5
A lot of this month has seen me re-addicted to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, since a friend got it recently and I've been playing with him some.  Some of my more recent accomplishments include beating all the Moga Village quests (including solo Alatreon), and completing all 1 through 7 star Port Tanzia quests.

22.  Papers, Please (Steam) - 3.16.2014
I hesitate to give this game a high rating if just because it was exhausting to play at times, as it really did feel like work; the gameplay really is just comparing people's permits, passports and such with other data to check for inconsistencies.  But everything about it is so perfect; the setting, the story (told through interesting and unique characters, as well as events that happen in-game).  The game is also constantly changing up the mechanics and throwing new stuff at you, which also keeps it fresh.  9/10
23.  Peggle Deluxe (Steam) - 3.16.2014
Um...so I've been buying lots of Humble Bundles lately, and I picked up the Pop Cap one and played through Adventure mode.  It's cheap, inoffensive fun that is more luck based than anything.  Still it has it's place.  6/10
24.  Kirby's Dream Course (Wii U) - 3.18.2014
To me, Kirby is without the doubt the series with the strongest spin-off games.  For some reason the core concept of copying abilities always seems to carry over really well into other genres, and it's the same in this pseudo-golf game.  The holes are neat in that they are essentially little puzzles where you figure out how to best navigate them, which often involves killing enemies in a certain order so you can use their powerups.  In addition to having strokes counted on each hole, you also have a health bar and lives, meaning you can be on Hole 5 of Course 2, fall off an edge, and have to start over.  So initially the game is more about getting to the end alive, but when you start to know the courses well, you can start going for score (and apparently there are extra courses to unlock as well).  9/10
25.  Batman Arkham Asylum (Steam) - 3.23.2014
I finally got around to playing the first Arkham game, which I initially put off just because I'm not a big Batman fan, but I really enjoyed this game.  So much so that I played it to completion (getting the highest scores on the challenges was very fun).  9/10
26.  The Swapper (Steam) - 3.30.2014
Nice puzzle platformer with really well-designed puzzles.  Also has a great atmosphere and interesting story.  8/10

APRIL - 5
27.  Bejeweled 3 (Steam) - 4.2.2014

Not much to say about this except it's Bejeweled with a nice mode variety.  Still, Popcap games have just about the worst presentation ever.  6/10

28.  Mario and Luigi Dream Team (3DS) - 4.7.2014

I took a couple months to get through this one.  It wasn't bad by any means but I struggled to keep interest in it.  Looking back it's hard to pinpoint the standout parts, except I will say that the dialogue is still sharp as ever, as most Mario RPGs are.  Also, the Massif bros are absolutely hilarious, and the whole time at Mt. Pajamaja was a riot.

29.  BookWorm Deluxe (Steam) - 4.14.2014

Another bland Popcap game, but I like Scrabble-esque word games so it was fun for a bit.  The stupid thing about this game is how incredibly easy it is to not lose.  I've literally only played ONE round of the "classic" version of this game, and it's been going on for over SIX HOURS.  Thankfully you can save your progress, but really I just feel like it should be easier to lose.  5/10

30.  Fallout New Vegas (Steam) - 4.15.2014

Enjoyed this one just as much as I did Fallout 3.  Just a great world to get lost in, and all the different characters and factions being so intertwined really shows off the depth of the storyline.  9/10

31. Strider (Wii VC - Genesis version) - 4.19.2014

Played through this game for a game club.  Pretty enjoyable but like many classics, very hard and very cheap.  Controls are difficult.  I beat it on easy and normal, but have yet to beat it on hard.  7/10

BIT.TRIP Presents...Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (Steam) - 4.24.2014

Went back and got all the achievements for this one

MAY - 7
32.  Dark Souls II (Steam) - 5.5.2014

Didn't blow me away quite like Dark Souls I did, but still a fantastic game.  As said by many others, the world just doesn't feel as cohesive, and some added features, like instant fast-travel, takes away from the immersion factor.  9/10

33.  Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (Steam) - 5.11.2014

This was oddly my first exposure to the Far Cry series.  It was certainly a fun romp, and the dialogue was hilarious, but overall it was just too easy, and stealth was never really as viable of an option as the game wanted it to be.  Still, I love the idea of an open-world game that doesn't overstay it's welcome and throw repetitive side missions at you.  7/10

34.  KRUNCH (Steam) - 5.13.2014

Neat little indie game I picked up in a humble weekly bundle.  It's a simple premise but well executed; you simply guide a character through short, booby-trapped levels until you get to the tube on the other end.  The music is particularly good, and after looking up the composer, I realized it was the same guy that did the soundtrack for Fez (Disasterpiece).  Would like to try completing all the achievements, but some of them are bugged...7/10

35.  Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams (Steam) - 5.18.2014

The first world of this game was pretty bland, but afterwards the difficult really starts ramping up and the level design gets way better.  Just an all-around solid indie-platformer. 7/10

36.  Risk of Rain (Steam) - 5.21.2014

I beat this game playing co-op with a friend.  We played online co-op even though we were actually playing locally, because we both have the game and that way we could each progress further in unlocking stuff in the game.  We probably played for 3 hours one night, and on last run we beat it.  It lasted about an hour, and my friend actually died before the last boss, but I was able to take him out on my own.  Fun game, but has a few bugs and kinks.  7/10

37.  Mark of the Ninja (Steam) - 5.25.2014

What an incredible game!  Just all around well polished and fun stealth gameplay.  Plus I love it when games give you the option to get through entire levels without killing anyone.  9/10

38.  Tower of Guns (Steam) - 5.25.2014

Pretty cool roguelike-FPS...I beat it on my 8th run.  Fast-paced, old-school FPS gameplay mixed with randomized levels and items.  7/10

Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed (Steam) - 5.30.2014

Finally beat all the expert staff ghosts and got all 50 achievements in this one!

I got my job back this month so more recently I've been playing more indie games, as the time commitment generally isn't as long.

JUNE - 5
39. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) - 6.4.2014

Really, really fantastic track design, and the graphics are gorgeous.  Everything is spot-on, except once again the lack of any exciting single player modes is really disappointing.  9/10

40. Blocks That Matter (Steam) - 6.7.2014

Neat little puzzler with some clever levels.  I ran into a few glitches along the way, but nothing too terrible.  Nice soundtrack.  7/10

41. Pikmin 3 (Wii U) - 6.17.2014

Got this as my free game with Mario Kart 8 and I have to say it's one of my favorite experiences I've had on the Wii U so far.  It's a pretty perfect game for speedrunning, and I love the timed aspect.  It's extremely lenient and you can really play at your own pace, but you can also challenge yourself to complete the game in fewer days.  9/10

42.  Botanicula (Steam) - 6.19.2014

Funny that I played this right after Pikmin 3, perhaps subconsciously due to plant-like creatures being very prominent.  I don't play many point-and-click adventure games, but this was excellent.  Just fantastic audio and visuals, a really bizarre adventure, and puzzles that are a combination of problem solving and trial and error.  8/10

43.  Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ (Steam) - 6.24.2014

A sweet variation of Pac-Man which is an all-time favorite of mine.  Biggest complaint is the presentation is really crappy, PC options don't let you set a higher resolution, and all the stupid social media integration.  But the changed-up gameplay is still a lot of fun.  8/10

JULY - 6
44.  Zombie Driver HD (Steam) - 7.2.2014
Pretty fun brainless romp through a city with a bird eye's view camera angle and tons of zombies to mow down.  Beat the story mode and played some of Blood Race, which I think was actually more enjoyable than the main story mode.  7/10

45.  StreetPass Mii Plaza - Flower Town (3DS) - 7.14.2014

Pretty much a non-game and the worst of the StreetPass games, but I became a Master Gardener so counting as "beaten."  5/10

46.  Cook, Serve, Delicious (Steam) - 7.16.2014

A fantastic "restaurant sim" that's essentially a game of learning how to prepare and manage multiple food orders via keyboard inputs.  But man is it fun.  There's some depth to it, as you can decide what foods to put on your menu, as well as upgrading them to get more recipes and taking part in special cooking challenges.  My number one complaint is that it can feel grindy sometimes, but it's still totally worth playing.  8/10

47.  Race the Sun (Steam) - 7.18.2014

This is essentially a mobile game, but it was pretty fun.  A 3D endless-runner where you control a spacecraft and try to avoid obstacles.  It has mobile-style "missions" which you complete to level up and earn unlocks for your ship.  7/10

48.  You Have To Win The Game (Steam) - 7.19.2014

Like VVVVVV, except incredibly bland and not very good.  Only finished it because it was really short.  3/10

49.  Game & Wario (Wii U) - 7.14.2014

Despite being a huge Wario Ware fan, like many others I initially put this game off because of the reviews.  I got it recently through Club Nintendo and have been super impressed.  There are a couple of dud minigames, but overall the use of the gamepad is fantastic.  Games like Shutter and Taxi are truly a lot of fun, as well as innovative.  The art, music, and humor from Wario Ware is still intact.  Best of all are the rewards you get from using tokens won from playing minigames.  There is an extensive collection screen with some absolutely hilarious/brilliant unlockables.  Probably the most underrated game I've played in a while.  8/10

AUGUST - 9

50.  EDGE (Steam) - 8.6.2014

Neat little concept with nice execution.  Great soundtrack.  One bigger complaint is that later levels are heavily based on trial-and-error and the layouts often move in seemingly random ways.  On a side note, this was already my FIFTIETH game beaten this year, and it's only the beginning of August!  7/10
51.  The Witcher (Steam) - 8.12.2014
Started this in late June and played it on and off for a month and a half, but I got through a bunch of the game in the last week or so.  I enjoyed this, though it is definitely rough around the edges.  Gameplay can be glitchy and sometimes just downright won't work properly, but the story and characters are really nice.  Also the balance is pretty bad; by far the hardest part is the end of Chapter 1, and later in the game I was just rolling through enemies on normal difficulty, even though I'm pretty sure I was underleveled. Anyways, I'm looking forward to starting the sequel in the near future.  7/10
52.  Xybots (Arcade) - 8.16.2014
Neat Atari arcade game from the 80's where you run around a bunch of corridors in a 3D environment shooting down bad guys.  In between levels you use money to purchase upgrades.  It really seems like it was quite advanced for its time.  At Level 15 you fight Master Xybot, then the game keeps going and you periodically face him again.  I consider it "beaten" by beating Xybot for the first time, since as far as I can tell it's an infinite loop.  I played through this with a friend and we had a pretty good time.  7/10
53.  Aero Fighters 2 (Arcade) - 8.16.2014
Seems like a pretty standard vertical shmup.  Some random guy played with me for a bit but I mostly did it single-player.  7/10
54.  Metal Slug X (Arcade) - 8.16.2014
Played through this with a friend and we were enthralled the whole time.  The animation in this game is awesome, and it's just brimming with character.  9/10
55.  Golden Axe (Arcade) - 8.17.2014
Again, I played through this with a friend, and while it was fun I feel like it really doesn't hold up well today.  It's pretty slow and clunky.  6/10
56.  Willow (Arcade) - 8.17.2014
It was funny seeing this game on an arcade cabinet as I was just talking with a friend about the movie recently.  I had no previous knowledge of this game's existence, though I did used to own Willow for NES which was a top-down RPG.  This was more of an action-platformer, but like the NES game, it was also developed by Capcom, and was excellent.  Some levels have you playing as Willow and others as Madmartigan, and throughout the level you get money from enemies and upgrade abilities at shops.  The game is remarkably faithful to the movie as far as events, which is really neat to see pan out.  Also the graphics and controls are very nice.  Level 3 has a difficulty spike where the enemies get really tough to defeat and there are some super hard/annoying sections (like the "maze" in the last level that sends you backwards for entering the wrong door), but overall this was a great game.  8/10
57.  Adventures of Shuggy (Steam) - 8.18.2014
Nice little puzzle-platformer with levels built around different mechanics such as teleporting, cloning, rotating rooms, or using a rope.  Presentation was pretty bland though.  7/10
58. Volgarr the Viking (Steam) - 8.31.2014
Hard to find fault with this game.  Yes it's brutal, but it's absolutely fair as well.  Just incredibly polished and well designed.  9/10

Entries 52-56 are all arcade games I played at a small gaming and anime convention called Omegacon in Charlottesville, VA.  They were all free to play, so I wasn't dropping quarters on lots of continues to beat them.

SEPTEMBER - 5

59.  Civilization V (Steam) - 9.3.2014
My first Civ game ever and my first win was pretty fun but also really easy since I played on the Settler difficulty (I wasn't sure how good I would be since I had never played these games before).  I won as Alexander the Great with a diplomatic victory.  Not sure if I'll start another game any time soon considering my first one took like 9 hours...but I could see myself sinking some time into this over the years.  9/10
60.  Kirby Triple Deluxe (3DS) - 9.10.2014
Beat this while on a weeklong beach trip and ended up getting a 100% file; just an overall solid Kirby game with fantastic visuals and some really neat copy abilities.  As with most Kirby games, it's too easy, and the level design is a little too simple sometimes, but I don't know of another game series that is crafted as lovingly and carefully as Kirby.  8/10
61.  Aqua Kitty: Milk Mine Defender (Steam) - 9.17.2014
Picked this up in a "Humble Weekly Shmup Bundle" and played through it in a couple hours.  It's a well-polished Defender clone with great music and visuals.  Difficulty really ramps up near the end.  An enjoyable game that doesn't break any boundaries but does everything well.  8/10
62.  Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures (Steam) - 9.22.2014
Kind of funny but ultimately not very fun action platformer.  5/10
63. Toki Tori (Steam) - 9.29.2014
Mechanically solid and often very difficult game.  You are given a level with eggs to collect and tools with which to reach them, but otherwise you're on your own!  Usually very fun but some of the puzzles are really frustrating.  7/10

OCTOBER - 3

64. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (3DS) - 10.10.2014
Just about all I could ask for in a portable Smash game.  Some people seem to think Nintendo held back on the 3DS version compared to the upcoming Wii U release but I still feel that it has more than enough content.  9/10
65.  Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe (Steam) - 10.21.2014
Nice little action-platformer (don't let the name fool you) on a puzzle-game landscape.  Fun gameplay and well-executed.  Also some great music.  8/10
66. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U) - 10.29.2014
Still my favorite Zelda game, and still some of my favorite visuals in any game ever.  Just all around one of my favorite gaming worlds.  10/10

NOVEMBER - 4

67. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (Steam) - 11.4.2014
Well I can pretty much kiss November goodbye as far as beating other games goes...at the time of writing, November 18th (2 weeks after the release) I have played over 50 hours with no signs of slowing down.  10/10
68.  Ridiculous Fishing (iOS) - 11.19.2014
A great game by "mobile" standards, of course it only holds your attention so long compared to other games.  Still the music is great and the premise is wacky.  7/10
69.  Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Wii U) - 11.24.2014
So much content you'll be overwhelmed.  Smash Tour isn't very good, but otherwise I would say it's the best Smash Bros. yet.  9/10
70.  Trine (Steam) - 11.28.2014
Really nice presentation and narration with solid gameplay.  Nothing that really blew me away but still worth a playthrough.  7/10

DECEMBER - 5
71. BIT.TRIP.BEAT Steam) - 12.5.2014

Hard as hell, even on easy mode.  The last boss was pretty difficult and I got a game over a few times.  7/10

72. StreetPass Mii Plaza: Monster Manor (3DS) - 12.8.2014

A great StreetPass game that involves traversing a giant mansion using puzzle pieces to fill in rooms and fighting ghosts that pop out of nowhere.  There are light RPG elements and lots of different weapons to obtain.  It's totally unique and very enjoyable, though like the other StreetPass games I wish it didn't take so long to hire your characters...you should be able to hire a bunch at a time, but instead you're forced to hire them one by one.  8/10

73. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (3DS) - 12.9.2014

I remember playing the Captain Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World and thinking "Man, I would love a game full of these levels" and it actually happened.  One of my most anticipated titles of the year, and I absolutely love it.  The level design is some of the most creative I've ever seen in a game.  9/10

74. BattleBlock Theater (Steam) - 12.13.2014

Hilarious game, really nice single player and multiplayer modes, also great level design that gets pretty difficult later on.  You can tell a lot of work went into polishing it.  9/10

75. Danmaku Unlimited 2 - 12.21.2014

Decent vertical scrolling shooter that I beat on easy mode.  Graphics are cartoony and colorful making it easy to locate enemy bullets which is good, but overall I didn't really dig the style.  7/10
