3DS XL Worth getting if I have a ps4?

phrozenthedruid

CAGiversary!
So I have the opportunity to buy a brand new 3ds XL for $130 off someone, and I'm DEFINITELY interested. I was a HUGE pokemon fan back in the day, and still am to be honest. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth buying another gaming device when I just got a ps4 and put so much time into. Granted,  I do commute to work about 45 mins there and back on a train, would get use out of it. I would def buy pokemon and the new zelda, but I'm trying to justify owning this thing. Is it worth it? Thoughts?

It's kind of like asking if you should buy spaghetti, even though you already have chicken. It's two completely different experiences.

Some bullet points:

* If it's the pink and white 3DS XL, you're getting burned since the seller most likely bought it for under $40 yesterday

* There are games you'll never find on a Nintendo handheld that are on PS4 and vice versa

I mean I just don't want to feel guilty, you know? Will I ignore my $400 gaming console I just bought? Or will I enjoy both and use them for different purposes?

And yeah I know, my co worker texted me yesterday and told me to get one from kmart for 40 and I was a moron and didnt look into it until today...eff my life.

Buy it. Just buy it. If your evening considering it, you know you already want it. Your apart of CAG so I assume you have the standard mentaility of looking at it like it was crack.

If the price is right and you feel it's time, I say well why not. Granted it could just go into your backlog(again I assume you have one this is CAG after all) until your ready to play it. At least if you do get it you won't have a headache over whether to get it or not and in that time if a really good deal on a game you want for it comes up, you won't have a reason hesitate on grabbing it since you already have the 3ds.

Guilty? The way you put it sounds like your worried that your cheating on your new high matience girlfriend with a bar fly or something.

Look the best example I can give you is myself. I've been playing pretty much nothing except Skyrim(after two years in backlog) since September and doesn't look like I'm going to quit anytime soon. Durning this time I not only picked up a 3DS XL, also got 5 games for it and quite a number of console games. I've only opened 3ds it to check it out and to grab the Zelda game that was free on the marketplace. I have no regrets on it. I know sooner or later I'll get to it.

I agree with davo on this. At that price I just wait until they all drop to $150 again, you know they will and then grab the one you really want. I do say the Mario/Lugi Anniversary one is really nice.

I own a PS4, Vita and 3DS XL. It's the only way I can play Nintendo titles without having to buy a Wii U right now(Nintendo also added MiiVerse to the 3DS). I also like the whole streetpass thing when you bring the 3DS outside.

dang I just saw that Maria/Luigi one, amazon has it for 182$ right now and I would get free 2 day shipping...

http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Silver-Limited-Edition/dp/B00FXOP1JI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1391467044&sr=8-4&keywords=3ds+xl

damn, it's really either this one for 180 with a full free game, and its kind of a collector edition 3ds xl, or go with the plain blue for $140 off some guy on craigslist....

hmmmmmmm

I wonder if a pokemon or zelda bundle will go on sale for $150 anytime soon, is that crazy to assume?

maybe i should wait for one of those bundles if they even exist?

Well I don't consider it a free game, but thats just me. I'm just anti-digital unless it for the PC. My thoughts when I got mine was if I'm going to pay even money for one either way, I may as well get one I really liked.

Well they were both on sale back on BF durning the whole Target fiasco(all models were in fact), they just weren't advertised as such. Some got them directly from Target, others(myself included) had to convinced another retailer to do a PM. I'm sure they'll be 3ds sales in the similar price range in the future. Though they might not be direct sale price but one of those get a free gift card combo, which I think Walmart has done twice now since BF. When and whether one of those bundles will be apart of that sale, I can't really say.

I will note though I was all ready to get the Zelda one, then when I saw it in person it kind of lost it's luster to me for some reason.

The 3DS won't replace your PS4, it isn't the same as a home console.  But that's the good thing.  It's different.  It totally replaced my iPad/Kindle gaming and I don't miss the tablets at all for gaming.  But it didn't replace the home console IMHO.

$130 is a great price and unless you stumble on a awesome price (like $40) then it's a great deal.

Well I ended up buying it, and I spent all night setting it up and playing around on it. I'm about to head to gamestop to pick up Pokemon. But I was looking at the estore and there's so many classic games I enjoyed playing when I was younger, but there's SO many. Do you have any recommendations on the must have classic games in the estore? Like which Mario , Kirby, dk, mega man , ect

A Nintendo system is a great complement to a Sony or MS console.  Nintendo games are pretty different than Sony or MS's first party stuff, as well as most third party games.

Having both a Sony and MS system gets a bit redundant unless you're a super hardcore gamer who has to play every major game.  But having one of those (to get more games, and a fix of shooters, WRPGs, sports games, racing sims etc. that aren't much on Nintendo platforms) and a Nintendo console gives you a nice, balanced library.  Assuming of course you like Nintendo games, which it seems you do.

As for 3DS specifically, I'd probably recommend it over a Wii U to get that Nintendo fix right now--as long as you aren't opposed to small screen gaming.  It's much cheaper, and has many more good games out.

Personally I have PS3, Wii U and 3DS at the moment.  I probably could have done without the Wii U, though I have enjoyed it.  I just don't really have time for keeping up with more than one platform, much less three!

I bought one for no reason, never thought I'd get back into video games and I love it.  Would be perfect for the train and then the PS4 for play at home.  Plus all the Nintendo games are good.

Very well said! I truly appreciate you're input. I'm excited! I'm walking to gamestop right now to pick up Pokemon and Zelda. Still debating what classic games to buy off the estore.

I think it's worth it I had a regular 3DS but upgraded to the XL a few weeks ago and I enjoy it alot. It's also great to play something else when your not on a gaming console I don't think you'll end up ignoring your PS4 because I just got one. There are plenty 3DS games that are great like you said you were a fan of Pokemon, I was too and I ended buying Pokemon Y.

I'm loving pokemon Y so far. havent opened zelda yet, but I'm sure I'll get around it soon. Also picked up megaman 2, kirbys adventures, and super mario bros!

Well from what I know is on the eShop,

River City Ransom hands down it's my favorite NES game and thats a tough list. Other than that I have to say Punch-Out(granted it's Mr. Dream verison but still), Ninja Gaiden II, Mega Man 3, Kid Icarus(original), and of course the original Zelda. There's more I could mention but again I don't know what is and isn't available on the eShop.

Well, if someone reading this thread wants a SEALED Mario & Luigi limited edition, I'd do Amazon - $10 or so, shipped, so that I don't have to deal with eBay. I bought my son Zelda and Mario/Luigi both and gave him his choice (he chose Zelda). It's past the return window so I was going to put it on eBay, but I'd rather do it here so PM me.

I bought one and don't regret it one bit (particularly since I never owned a standard DS).  I've since picked up about a half dozen DS and 3DS games for it (finally playing and completing Final Fantasy 3).  It hasn't gotten much play since I picked up my Vita but I still use it on occasion.

I'll second Kid Icarus as games to own from the e-shop, plus it's in 3D.

I bought a 3DS XL Zelda edition for full price back in Nov, I had just enough to buy it and I couldn't stop myself lol. It brought back memories of when I got my NES and the original Zelda. So far I have played Link Between Worlds, Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Bravely Default. It has been worth it for me, mostly because it has games that I'm highly interested in. If there aren't at least a few games that you already want to play then I wouldn't buy it.

Even though Nintendo didn't hit the number they wanted to in sales for 3DS this year it still outsold all other consoles in Nov and Dec. My assumption is with that kind of sales we should see a crap ton of new games coming our way.

Far as 3DS XL limited edition deals I would say buy the Dream Team edition, $179 for the system plus it comes with Paper Mario. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Mario-Dream-Team-Value-Bundle-40-Savings/32821156

Make sure to sign up to Club Nintendo and enter all the codes, buy Bravely Default enter that code and wait for a game you like to use your points on plus you should have enough to be gold status so in June you will get a free game then also.

Hell last week Nintendo gave us Four Swords for free also!

So far I only entered the code for the 3ds, and Pokemon. I've yet to open Zelda, but that would give me some more club Nintendo points and put me at over 300 maybe 400 ish. Loving this thing so far. Addicted on breeding competitive Pokemon haha

I think the 3DS is the best console out right now as far as game library is concerned.

There are so many DS and new 3DS games out for the system (2013 was killer) and it's the perfect console to play to get your Nintendo fix without having to spend too much money.  I'd recommend a 3DS over a Wii U and that's not even considering the huge gap in price difference. Almost every kind of Nintendo game can be experienced through the 3DS, even Smash Bros later this year.

You get 160 for the 3DS and 40 for Pokemon, how would you have over 300?

You can download the pokebank app and get some CN points.

Also within the pokebank app (After you start the free trial) is the poketransfer tool which gives you additional points.
