I am looking to buy a WiFi booster, and may have actually purchased a product that I thought was a wifi booster but is indeed not. If anyone could tell me if that is a wifi booster, and how it works that would be great. Because my exisitng internet setup contains a modem, and a router that is connected to that modem that broadcasts my wifi. I need to use a wifi booster to wirelessly connect to that router and extend the signal to my second story room.

A "booster" will recieve a signal, rebroadcast, your computer processes; then you send a signal, the booster recieves, and rebroadcasts back to the original router.
This isn't neccesarily a bad setup, but it will slow down your internet/ping a bit since you are essentially repeating the same thing twice. If there's alot of other wireless networks around too it just adds to it, making the amount of interference more.
A better option, esp if it's just to one computer, is a ethernet over power adaptor. One plugs into the wall where your modem is, the other end plugs into where you want internet and you wire it to the computer. It uses the existing electrical system in the house. They work in like, 90% of situations. I only encounter problems with EOP adaptors on houses with addons (the addon will have a seperate electrical loop, or some strange/half ass done electrical setup)

What the gentleman above me said. In addition, boosters are sound for G Networks, but N's do not need them (cause the signal is much stronger and transmits more data over a greater distance). The drawback is house design and material can affect connectivity.
EoP (or Ethernet over Powert) adapters are an internet connection over your power setup in the house. The signal degradation occurs, but is still quite good if you're not too far from the router and its PoE.
As for signal, if you want to get a wireless connection going up to the second story, look for anything that transmits a 300Mbps, 2.4GHz band AT MINIMUM. If all your wireless devices come from the past 5 years alone, then I'd recommend going for 5GHz band.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I really had no clue what to do. I will try the signal booster that I already bought, but if I experience more problems with that, I will give the power adapters a try as well. If I need any additional help, I will be sure to post back here!

could always use an old router that is dd-wrt compatible, flash it and use it as a repeater, especially if you have old routers lying around or even pick one up for cheap
Thank you, I managed to get the range extender that I purchased to work just perfectly. Going to buy some extra ethernet cables and hook up my game console and blu ray/dvd player into it as well. Thanks for all the help again guys!
