No idea what I should get, what accessories he needs.  What games should look at etc etc

He likes most any game (he is 11 almost 12) and plays most sports games, lego games, ghosts, plants vs zombies etc etc.

Just need someone to basically point me in the right direction as I really know very little about it.

FYI we do not have any playstations, we are an Xbone household.

Thanks in advance.

Get a Vita with screen protector and a case.  Get him MLB the Show, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, and one of the Lego game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified is garbage....

get him Muramasa Rebirth....he'll love it

Dragon's Crown

Lego Marvel Super Heroes

Rayman Legends

and maybe Hot Shots Golf

as for a case....here you go

Grab a year of PlayStation Plus for $50 and each month he gets AT LEAST 1 free PS Vita game. PS+ also gives you at least 1 free PS3 and PS4 game if you were considering it.

You will also want to pick up a 16GB memory card (or larger). The games will be on his Vita because you download them and you won't have to worry about him losing the game cartridges.

Here's the current list of free games for the PS Vita if you have PS+, this changes every Tuesday. As one new game comes in, one usually leaves, but you can "buy" them online via the PS store, directly from your computer.

So basically the best way to utilize the Vita is via PS+ membership ($50 a year unless some sort of deal is around) vs buying game cartridges?

How much do games typically cost on PS+ and if I buy the game and the PS+ membership runs out he would still own the game right?

Which case is this? Google is letting me down on this one.

Think of PS+ as a...rental? Any game that you buy that is on sale/discount because of PS+, you keep, regardless of membership. All FREE games you "buy" with PS+ will stop working if you do not renew the membership. But for $50, you get a year of free games + discounts on games that aren't free. Sony has been really great lately with their sales too. Usually PS+ members get 50-75% off during these sales.

But if you don't own a PS3 half the free games will be useless to you.  Why not spend the $50 on 2-3 games he would like?

Well the discounts alone for PS+ subscribers more than make up for the annual fee, if you buy just a moderate number of digital games. For me, those discounts make it more than worth it. The "free" games through PS+ are just gravy.

But if you buy more digital games, you have to add in the cost of bigger memory cards.

Thats not a big deal. My 32gb card has about 80 games on it. The memory cards are a one-time investment that benefits you for the life of the system. And honestly, if you can't afford an extra accessory like this, you probably can't afford the Vita at all.

My 32gb card cost around $55, so that's less than a dollar per game for storage. If you look around, you can find the 32gb cards for a decent price.

Many of the "kid" games are smaller as well (1-2.5GB). Assuming the OP buys a 16GB card, he could easily fit 8-10 games on there. A lot of the indie games are under 1GB, so there's plenty of room.

Where the heck did you find one for $55?! I should have bought one on black friday/cyber monday. I think they were around that price then >.<

I actually got two for almost exactly that price (mid $50's, one for each Vita that I have). One directly from Sony when they briefly offered it at that price online, and one from Gamestop when they (also briefly) offered it online. Looking on Ebay just now I saw one for $66 (includes shipping) from Hong Kong, so I'm sure with time these can be found for a decent price. And once the 64gb comes out in North America, the price of the 32gb cards should drop a bit more.

Gotcha. Yeah, I feel 66$ is just too damn much. It is a principle thing. Ha! I'll just keep watching for deals.

Thanks for the info.

Also, since everyone on this thread is suggesting things for a new Vita owner. I was thinking about a case for games. My messenger bag is padded enough, I'm not worry about the system itself, but the games and memory cards are so dang small.

I was thinking:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B007AJZ5PY/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&colid=2IS8CDYY5MXWV&coliid=IUAK36KIPGGLO&condition=new

Unless someone has a better suggestion...

Also, on that note, heads up for how small the memory cards are, especially with a young child. The memory cards are about the size of a pinky nail. Maybe half a dime. They are freakishly small.

Eh, I think $50 for PS+ is way too much considering you lose access to all of the "free" games once your sub runs out. That and you don't get to choose from the store what you want to play, you are limited to the limited selection of titles selected for you.  If there isn't anything your son likes at the moment he is SOL.

I'd rather buy 2-5 used games to own and play forever than spend $50 on a subcription.  Now if you have a PS3 as well (to get the most out of the free games) and can get a subscription code for around $30 (during black friday) then it's probably worth it.

Some links for cheap Vita game deals:

Amazon Warehouse - inventory fluctuates periodically so check in from time to time for some amazing finds

GoHastings - also fluctuates with inventory, better to use when there is an active promotion available (30%, 40% off, etc)

Best Buy used games - this is ideal primarily when they have a buy 2 get one free promotion on used games

Well even at $50, the discounts I get would more than compensate for the cost of the sub (I do buy a fair number of digital games, but also quite a few physical from BB, Amazon, etc). But PS+ has been on sale many times (especially over the holidays), and I got a few subs for $30 each. I know a huge number of other CAGs also picked up multiple years of PS+ @ $30 per year during those sales, and at that price its a ridiculous bargain. It may not be available right now for that, but if you keep your eyes out, it can be had for a better price.

PS+ is great! Definitely worth the money for the free games. Yes if you let the sub run out you can't play them, but if start it again later all the games you had before work again. And there's lots of great discounts too.

What you really need to do is buy a ps4 to go along with your vita.

The ps4 allows the vita to remotely play it, even works fairly well over the internet if you have decent service. Basically can use the vita to play ps4 games on the vita screen, its really awesome.

I bought the RDS case recently and ended up taking it back....the Vita fit way too snug for my liking. I ended up grabbing a Targus notebook case that had plenty of room for the charger and games, plus will even have room for the grips whenever I get them. It was also cheaper :)

It's easy enough to just keep a few games you're playing/planning no playing next on there. I have a 16gb card and it's plenty of space. I don't replay games hardly at all, so I just delete after beating. Easy enough to redownload if I want to play it again. And with PS+ there's the cloud saves so you don't lose your save file by deleting.

PS+ is the best thing in gaming right now IMO. I've gamed a ton more the past couple of years just from all the free games and super cheap games in the sales. Gets me to play more games, and a lot of games I'd never bought outright as I tend to only buy the big AAA games in genres I like. Now I'm enjoying gaming more as it's getting me out of that comfort zone and playing stuff like Gravity Rush, Guacamelee, Spelunky etc. that I'd never have played if they were free or just a few bucks on sale on PS+.

Obviously it's not for everyone as some like collecting physical games. And the memory card can be an issue for some who want every game at their fingertips in case they happen to want to play it. But for me, I could honestly be perfectly happy playing nothing but PS+ freebies and discounted games. I don't do it as I still buy an AAA game here and there, but the PS+ stuff is 90% of my gaming lately.

The ps plus also grants you access to ps4 multiplayer. Something else the op might want to consider should he ever want to pick up a ps4. I use a screen protector, and a pull and go folio. I have the trigger grips too since I find holding the vita for long periods of time uncomfortable. It all fits in my pull and go and I just throw that in my backpack. My vita still looks pretty new.
